  • FWIW ~21hr flights via Singapore. Fine if you're young and time is cheap. Forget it if you've got kids or if you're in a rush.

      ho chi minh, actually

    • +3

Flights are via Ho Chi Minh City*.

Flight times vary depending on dates, could even organise a bit of a sightsee if you pick the right one, which will appeal to some, not to others.

      • +1

Any dates with more than 30hrs layover?

        • -1

usually max of 23:50 from what I've seen. Can use filter on left to adjust.

        • +1

To leave the airport you'd need a visa for Vietnam which costs 25USD and pretty simple to get

    • +5

stop over in singapore changi isn't bad

  • +1

Anyone flown vietjet before and can share their experience?

    • +5

Delays are rather common; they don't have enough staff at the airport (at least in Melbourne). You would be lucky to be checked in and board on time, which has domino effect of plane leaving on time. This usually equates to 1-2hrs delay from experience. Especially the flights that is scheduled at 00:30AM.

    • +6

Several hour flight delay in HCM when all other airlines were on-schedule. Vowed never to use them again!

      • +7

They are cheap for a reason. If you value price over inconvenience and your time then it might be for you.

  • +7

delay and cancellation handling is particularly weak

I'm this market where companies can't seem to get logistics right and cancel/delay flights whenever they can, this would be a big risk/pain/waste of time.

My big issue is that this is a budget airline, with ticket prices higher Jetstar's February sale on the awfully configured a330 with the nine abreast seating and with a longer flight time due to the stop over in Vietnam.

I think they need to take at least $100 more off before I consider this a bargain as the flight times at least from Melbourne seem to be 9+6 hours each way and that is not including the time you have to wait in Vietnam until your next flight.

You also get no meals or beverages and spending at least 15 hours in those very narrow seats each way would be torture. Some of the layover times a huge too, lasting almost days

I don't usually like to neg items but I think the bargain is not as great as it should be for a flight that should be much cheaper due to the tighter seating than even jetstar.

Even the baggage is more expensive than jetstar with it costing $69 on way for 20kg compared to $68 for jetstar. Meals are also more expensive, costing over $20, whereas jetstar has a few items with a drink starting at $12. Jetstar also provides free water cups on their planes which I think every airline with flights over 3 hours should be required to do.

    • I'd definitely recommend JAL for the extra room in the seats, but it looks like it has been a while since they've had a deal.

      • JAL is definitely Y+, I flew them recently on a short hop (with their 8 abreast 787s) from Gimpo to Haneda and had an excellent flight (sadly no sales).

I did a dummy booking in November, and also found PAL flights to Japan from Melbourne, albeit with a one day stopover in MNL (on way to Japan) for just over $800 and considering the overall flight time is shorter and it's a full service carrier with 30kg of baggage, I'd think this is even better a deal the the vietjet squeezejet express.

Christ… how does the layover work for 35 hour flight? Wait around the airport?

    • +13

      the airport is the holiday

    • +6

Bear in mind layover over 24hrs requires a visa in Vietnam. Fun experience.

      • Lol… u used to get a discount for a visa if you had a viet name .. lol.. don't think that works anymore.. that just increased the cost

        • +1

Actually, anything in Vietnam requires money. Even customs. USD only.

          • +2

@4tran: So just like every other country in the world? Besides the USD

          • @4tran: What are you talking about, customs requires money?

        • +1

get a discount for a visa if you had a viet name .. lol

          Thanks for sharing.

          Cheers,

          don't think that works anymore.

          Ah, never mind then.

  • Anyone know what the cheapest comparable Frequent Flyer/Velocity alternatives are to put it into perspective?

    • Cathay is similarly priced, depending on dates and if booked well in advance. Not velocity partner though.

The Qantas deal (now expired: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/765480) to Japan HND was great, booked return flights for June.

  • For this price for a low cost carrier? No, thanks.

    • I'm looking at flights to Vietnam around the peak just before Xmas, and they are still the cheapest at the moment.

Did you see any cheaper flights than the ones listed??

      • Sorry, I am not looking for flight to Vietnam.
My flight around the same time last year on Royal Brunei to Japan for $700 was execellent. The transit time in Seri Begawan was not as good as popular transit hub like Singapore, however, I was satisfied with RB's inflight service. There was another RB's sale for return ticket to Japan earlier this year around same price. Sadly, I missed it.
I got jetstar deal for Japan return airfare for around $400 later this year. TBH, I would call that a DEAL if jetstar doesnt cancel the flight.

For the price tag around $600, I would rather wait for a deal and pay a little more extra for a full service flight.
