Google Pixel Watch Wi-Fi $398 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Harvey Norman

320

Yeah yeah, it's got a pretty crappy battery, but I think this might be the cheapest it's been?

Should be able to price match HN with the Google Store too if you're like me and looking to use some google credit on something.

What does crap battery mean? As in it won't last a working day with every turned on? Or like you'll go to bed with no battery?

    • +8

I keep reading people say it has a crappy battery but I get 2 days wear out of mine (by that I mean i put it on Monday AM and need to recharge it Tuesday PM) - but similarly if I charge it whilst in the shower each day it just keeps going

Maybe I don't use the features enough :)

      • +3

That's fine to me. I charge my phone every night before bed so it's not a stretch to charge a watch as well.

        • +1

Unless you are (attempting to) sleep/activity track

      • +1

Thanks for the real world feedback. Sounds a bit better than an Apple watch then.

      • That's actually pretty manageable. Are you using it for activities like running much?

I basically want a HR/fitness tracker that will let me leave the phone at home when I go for a run, and still be able to listen to tunes and buy a coffee afterwards. Not sure how I'd actually go wearing it when I sleep, but I figure I'd want to try it so would want the battery to last the day with a top up while I shower.

        • +1

I don't have the LTE version so can't say how it would last listening to music etc as i still link to that all via phone.

But i do have the tracker turned on, heart measure, alerts etc and with a shower top up will last the whole day easily. I tend to be about 70% battery in the evening, so would think enough for some music and a run

          • @damnair: Sweet. I only want the wifi version too (boost won't support secondary devices like watches), my plan is to download some music to the device from my youtube music account and use that for runs.

Been a struggle to find something that will work with YTM offline and has reasonable battery life. Keep coming back to the pixel watch (especially since I've got the credit from the pixel phone last year).

          • +4

@damnair: The real question is.. do you shower in the morning or in the evening

        • @Srey Have a look at Garmin watches when they go on sale. High price point but the quality is there. My Venu 2S does everything you have just mentioned

          • +1

@Lanushi: Yeah that's what I've been looking at, no support for youtube music unfortunately, although I could work around that by using Prime Music I guess since I also have a standard prime subscription.

Biggest attraction of the Pixel is that I have store credit that will cover it at sale price. Don't really 'need' a watch, so paying out of pocket isn't attractive, but I don't have anything else to use the credit on so may as well give this a shot. If I find I use it lots and the battery shits me then maybe I can justify the upgrade to a garmin.

            • @Srey: That's fair - unless there's apps/ebooks etc. that you would want, I can understand the need to use the credit on a Google watch.

The only down side to my Garmin is the lack of mic/speaker, and inability to type responses to texts. I guess I was after an Apple watch equivalent, with all the top tier fitness features.

    • it may be crappy compared to other watches, however it lasts 1 full day no problem, so as long as you charge it every day (before going to bed, or while you sleep, if not interested in sleep tracking, then it's perfectly fine. Honestly, I love this watch and I would not care for a longer lasting battery

  • +1

It's a dollar cheaper at Officeworks. I was sad I missed out on the last special but it's a further $50 cheaper than the last deal!!

Yeah .. on battery life. I won't do sleep tracking so don't think I'll have any problem.

Regardless of the product, always happy to pay more elsewhere than giving my money to Greedy Gerry.

  • Any deals on 4g model?

  • Anything else worth getting with my Google credit?

Pixel Buds Pro? If you have a Pixel phone, I've got the Gen 2 pixel charging stand which is great.

      • I'm very happy with the Pixel Stand Gen 2 I got for my Pixel 6.

I'll get the Pixel Buds Pro once my Sony buds die - kind of hoping they'll be a bonus with the Pixel Fold!

        • Is the fan annoying on the stand at all?
          (gen 1 stand owner)

          • +1

@mrjaytee: I think there is in the Gen 2. You can hear it kick in when its in full power mode. I put mine into adaptive charging mode so it trickle charges overnight until the morning. Its on my bedside table and the fans dont activate in that mode meaning a peaceful sleep.

Worth noting its $20 cheaper on Amazon for $99 delivered than on the Google Store ($119 delivered).

          • +1

@mrjaytee: I've got the stand right next to my bed. Doesn't disrupt me

      • Recently used credit for the Pixel Buds Pro. Brilliant little buds, well integrated in the pixel phone line up. Great battery and sound, noise cancellation. Fit is fine in ear. I have been using them daily now which is a change for my lifestyle.

  • Can they be used with GPS (Google Maps, activities tracking) and as a music player without a phone nearby? (E.g. for running without a phone)

    • +1

      I believe so

      • Not sure if you need fitbit subscription for basic run tracking

  • My 2c after owning it a month.

Watch battery is fine as long as you put on bedtime mode while sleeping and just charge while you're in the shower or otherwise not using it. From empty it takes 1:20 to charge though.

    BUT

Having owned a Fossil Carlysle for a couple of years, then a Galaxy 3 for a few years, and the screens lasting forever not a single scratch, I managed to put a decent scratch in my glass within 10 days.

The watch is very exposed as it has no bezel and they didn't use sapphire glass. 9to5Google did a poll and close to 35% have managed to scratch their watch within a month.

So yeah - don't worry about the battery (yes I exercise at least 1-2 hours every day) but it's a "dress" watch in that you have to be a bit careful with it. I'm not even sure when I scratched it maybe when I was changing a hubcap on the car.

    • +1

Thanks for the heads up mate. Google just approved my price match (also dropped the cost on their store to $399) so I should have the watch next week.

I see there's companies making screen protectors for it, have you tried one of those?

      • +2

I've bought two types off of amazon- I've got one of these on a LTE version and they look good, don't interrupt use but I have scratched the protector twice since Jan. I think the dome shape of the watch might be a scratch magnet.

        • Cool, I'm likely to be pretty clumsy with it so it's probably worth getting some kind of protection on there.

Even though the protector is scratched do you think it saved the face from damage?

          • +1

@Srey: I do. I don't think the protector is as hard as the watch's screen but they are significant scratches.

      • My son and I both got a pixel watch and stupidly talked about getting a protector but never bought/fitted one.

Again, probably my naivety of 4 years with smartwatches and not a single scratch.

I think he said there was one that could possibly hide the scratch also as well as protect and I think he said he was going to buy a 2 pack. I'll chat to him when he gets back from work. He's more peeved I've scratched mine than I am.

I lot has to do with the shape but the absolute ease with which it tends to scratch maybe it would have been better if they had used sapphire glass like my previous two watches.

Anyway - my fault - move on I guess.

  • this is a great watch - bought it for cheap ($300) on marketplace and I couldnt be happier. I think $400 is still a good price. It's very smooth and wworks quite flawlessly. Battery life is OK - easily lasts 24 hours, so as long as you charge it once a day it's fine.
