Was exploring PC Case gear and found a great deal on a 80 Plus Titanium rated power supply. Seems to be good quality based on power supply tier list https://cultists.network/140/psu-tier-list/

Great series of PSU's but the support in Australia is suspect

These normally have a 10 year warranty but PCCG as the official distributors have cut this to 5 years

Great deal, if this was atx3/12vhpwr I'd be right on this

  • My home server currently has a Thermaltake Toughpower 600W Gold PSU in it.

I'm wondering if this Titanium PSU is worth the investment. I'm too lazy to do all the calculations, but I read that all Titanium PSUs are guaranteed to have a minimum 90% efficiency at 10% load. I would think this is a big deal in the context of a homeserver, which idles for most of the day at 10-20% load.

    • Yes to all of the above, except that your server won't need anywhere near 850W unless you have some serious hardware in it ๐Ÿ˜

You'd get even more efficiency from say a 500W Titanium…

      What's in the server ?

      • As far as I'm aware, there are no 500W Titaniums around. A 650W Seasonic Prime Titanium is currently $319, which is ridiculous compared to 850W/$199.

My server doesn't even have a dGPU in it. Just a Ryzen 4650G, 32GB 2666MHz ECC ram, 4x 10TB drives, 3x 3TB drives in a hotswap bay, 4x 140mm fans, an HBA card and a Quad NIC.

There is no doubt an 850W PSU is massively overkill. My current idle load (with drives spun up) is just 100W. However the minimum 90% efficiency for 10% load is what I find interesting. With my Thermaltake Gold 650W, if I'm running at 20% load (which is basically idle), I'm getting 87% efficiency. Even when being further away from the 50% sweetspot, the 850W Titanium should still more efficient on idle, and even more efficient under load, especially if I install a dGPU later down the line.

        • It's an interesting plan - my server is very similar to yours except I'm running an older CPU architecture with more hard drives.

I've never considered swapping out the (really) old PSU but now I am considering it ๐Ÿ˜ I have solar and battery on my house, so power consumption isn't really a concern though.

  • Been using a bequiet PurePower since 2016 which isn't as good as this one. Very happy with it for my silent PC built - psu is dead silent as the fan doesn't spin most of the time, and the fan is still smooth and quiet when it does during gaming.

  • This looks like a pretty good deal considering it's 155 USD on on newegg and that's considered a bargain according to r/buildapcsales
