It's better than 2k, but lets not get too technical.

    • +3

oh no…it has a better resolution than "actual 2k"… how terrible for customers..

    • +1

Is this really the hill you want to die on?

    • It's so horrible that they would mislead consumers by … giving them a product that's actually better than "2K"?

    • +1

2K resolution is a generic term for display devices or content having a horizontal resolution of approximately 2,000 pixels.

  • Link not working?

I have two of these and they are excellent

    • Are they tough enough to put in a backpack next to an ipad/laptop?

      • They sit on a desk so cannot comment

    • How is the inbuilt speakers on these?

      • I use proper speakers on my desk so again cannot comment on the sound quality

      • Quiet, but servicable for quiet undemanding listening. Not much bass and not particularly clear.

    • +3

Are you able to show your setup? Kinda wanna see how they look and are these your primary monitor displays?

      • You can use these as you would use a regular monitor. If your computer has multiple USB-C / Thunderbolt 3/4 ports that support DisplayPort Alt-mode, then you can power 2 or 3 of these, each attached to a multi-monitor mount, or individual arms (whatever you prefer). They can be portrait or landscape oriented, but all the ports are on one side, so if you're planning to mount them landscape, then you'll need 90 degree adapters for the cables.

You can use it on the side of a laptop as well on the table, but it won't be so ergonomic. Or you could prop one or two up on a stand behind a laptop for a stacked 3 monitor layout.

Or if you have a 27" 16:9 (or a 34" Ultrawide) screen, you could mounted each 16" in portrait orientation on either side of the 27", and the vertical heights of the displays will almost match.

The possibilities are endless. But you'll need to ensure the cables are long enough, routed nicely for a good set up.

me perfect? me knows it. but thanks you!

  • Why do laptop screens cost so much compared to something like this or even tablet screens? Is it simply the form factor?

    • Because they can.

    • +1

Laptop screens don't cost that much if you get them from the same place (China, without going through distributors who all demand a cut). It's just that these are no-brand products sold direct from China where they can make them extremely cheaply. This is basically a laptop screen with a controller in an enclosure. The box is a brown box, that says "portable monitor" on it, and inside there's a user guide, 3 cables (2x USB-C, 1x HDMI to mini-HDMI), and the monitor in its case in a bag. There's no frills whatsoever.

With a branded product like an Asus, there's more overheads such as marketing, support, warranty, fancier packaging, etc. to cover, plus more sophisticated designs and distribution channels. With these, there's none of that, so they can afford to do it cheaply.

An issue I found with my unit that if you're using HDMI, you should make sure there's no power running to it via the USB-C ports, otherwise it makes the laptop fans spin up by being connected to the HDMI port. I did a search, and it appears other people have similar issues on other systems, which is a bit strange.

There is no technical reason that justifies it, laptop screens do cost this much if you buy them as spare parts.

It's market segmentation, rather than make one decent model, introduce a new model that is intentionally cut down so that consumers will be convinced to spend more on the 'mid range' model.

It's why you often see features that are already built in to be disabled on entry level models - for example the cheaper CPUs have less cores (reasonable) but also lower clockspeeds (when in fact higher clockspeeds should be more easy to achieve when there are less cores).

So looking at productreview, the aliexpress site rates 1.4 stars out of 5 with a lot of 1 star reviews. Based on that I'm going to give it a pass. Anyone bought from them before though?

    • +1

And OzBargain has 2.8 so why are you here? People always share their negatives and significantly less their good experiences.

  • High hz, great res. Seems like a cracker of a deal

    • I guess u perfect

      • can't comment

  • Are the specs like 100% SRGB true? Usually a lot of no brand specs are made up. Eg I had a phone whose screen resolution did not match the promised one.

Also is there a way to make a spare Android tablet basically work as an external monitor?

    • It is pretty close. After calibration (involving adjustment of RGB values), I got about 97.5% coverage, which is much better than many 45% NTSC displays on cheap laptops.

      • How would an average mainline laptop score?
Eg surface laptops, lenovo yoga 7 2in1
Anything in a notebook that claims 100% srgb seem to have an extra fee >$150.

        • No such thing as 'average'. It depends on the model, and they're all different between models (and even within models if there's different configurations available). You'll have to check the individual spec sheets.

    • Yes there is application called spacedesk. It's used between android and windows. Also there is another app that does it too but don't remember.

  • What's the usual delivery time for this?

  • +2

It says 60 Hz on the store page

    • It seems like they've changed the description from what it showed earlier, so maybe it was a mistake. I've updated the listing to reflect this. Also, from the review pictures, it seems different again. My one has the controls and headphone on the right, but some of the pictures from the reviews show these (along with the inputs) to be on the left.

  • Something to note too is that it's a 8bit screen with Display Color: 16.7M in the specifications but the big image advertisment says its a 10bit screen with display color depth of 1.07 billion.

    • 8-bit + FRC (dithering) to simulate 1.07 billion is quite common.
