Best forward-facing car seat according to SafeWise
BigW exclusive.

Had a handful available in local BigW in the morning and I literally just picked up last 2 a few hours later.
Seems to be still stock in various stores though, so make sure you secure one before they're gone.

  • Thanks OP, got 2.
    Oh wait…

Nice flex of your horizontal folk dancing.

  • not isofix

No seat that goes up to 8 years is ISOFIX compatible.

This seems like a good deal for Britax - looks similar to the Guard Pro. I've had my eye on the Maxi Cosi Luna Smart but might need to have a closer look at this model

      • I wonder what the actual difference is compared to the Guard Pro

        • +2

The arm rests look different but I'm sure its relatively similar. Interesting this model doesn't have any "Britax" branding - I suspect because they want to keep that branding for their more premium products.

The baby seat industry smells like the mattress industry - lots of nearly identical products sold with different brands and fabrics so no one retailer ever has to price match the other. I've been looking mostly at Infasecure seats (I quite like their Twist and Lift system) and they seem to be the most notorious at this practice.

    • Also Isofix doesn't mean it is safer.
And even if a seat is isofix compatible, doesn't mean it will fit nicely and you'd have to revert to seatbelt fix.

For a seat which supports both Isofix and Seatbelt, i find that i can fit it just as good as isofix quicker than actually doing isofix.

Ok rating on www.childcarseats.com.au of 3.8/5 (forward facing) and 3.5/5 (booster) for protection

    • +1

I'd go off these ratings by an independent government funded body that actually does lab tests rather than a website that is funded using paid affiliate links.
That doesn't mean that the OPs deal isn't worth considering, just that it's worth considering alongside other options.

      • Is there a site that has ratings by an independent government funded body that actually does lab tests? Genuine question - would be interested.

        • +1

Yes the one I posted childcareseats.com.au which is an initiative of Child Restraint Evaluation Program (CREP) which is a partnership between Transport for NSW (TfNSW), Transport Accident Commission (TAC), Department of Transport Victoria and The Child Accident Prevention Foundation of Australia (Kidsafe Australia).

The ratings come from independent tests

    • the website you posted (e.g. CREP Scores), it is a good starting point. However not 100% accurate, people dont trust it as much because their testing methodology isn't quite repeatable.

Often manufacturers will make the same seat base but change the fabrics for comfort and cosmetic looks depending on the retailer. The score the seat should technically be the same but it often isn't….

      • I trust it more than the website OP posted.

        • True the website that the OP posted isnt even Australian. Haha

    • You need to look at ease of use too, which is how easy it is to use the seat correctly and achieve the protection rating. A 5 star protection rating means nothing if you can't use it correctly.

Also where these ratings fail is the comfort of the child also needs to be factored in somehow, a comfortable child that keeps quite and doesn't distract you offers more safety than anything else the seat offers.

  • Makes me want to go forth and procreate. Now, for this I'll need a volunteer…

    • im a male that identifies as a man.

      • Quite unusual

  • Each to their own, but I would personally Rear Face my child as long as you can (e.g. up to 4yo) which you will need an ERF (extended rear facing) seat.
It is much safer, if you don't believe it, watch this test dummy video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuZFVPv3Rpk

Also a news article (luckily the child survived with severe injuries), child was forward facing and internally decapitated.

    https://www.kidspot.com.au/parenting/toddlerinternally-decap…

0-8yo and 6m-8yo seats are ok in Rear Facing, however they typically take up HEAPS of room compared to a more specific 0-4yo which supports ERF.

Good luck rear facing your 3yo. We wanted to rear face as long as possible to but by about 18mo our child hated it and would scream. Forward facing they are happy. A happy and comfortable child who isn't going to distract you is the most important variable for safety.

      • Really depends on the kid. Ours is 3 and perfectly happy. Had a decent mirror up from the start and I think that helps- he can see in all directions.

  • Good find. I would have bought this if I'd found it when i was in the market 6 months ago.

  • I don’t think this is the “Britax” Safe-N-Sound, rather just “Safe-N-Sound”.

Both have the same “Safe-N-Sound” logo, but seems like the non Britax version are somewhat a more budget range that Big W and I think Kmart or Target carry?

I recall trying to find out the differences on Britax and non Britax when I picked up a Britax Safe-N-Sound Maxi Guard Pro from Baby Bunting. Wanted to find out why Britax ones were much more expensive…

Still to this day I don’t know what the differences are, but just a guess that Britax seem more premium with a price tag to suit 🤷🏻‍♂️
