Need Help Moving on from My Huawei P30

It's been 4 years with my huawei p30 and there's been no avaliable updates or security patches in the past year. It's still running fine and the battery holding up well into its 4th year. Its just that it's not future proof and the camera quality has gone downhill. So i'm looking to move on but i'm struggling to find anything comparable or anything that's an upgrade from my p30.

Anyone got any recommendations?

Just looking for a reliable phone with lasting batts and a good camera

    • Meh… I have the 7 Pro… and it's still very much a work in progress… Last update, it set my screen brightness so it now only goes to about 60% at full brightness. Every update they seem to mess up more than they fix.

Some ideas to consider if keeping your phone:
Install gcam or opencamera from a trusted source = this MAY fix your camera.
Don't visit dodgy websites, open link in emails smss or download dodgy apps etc = this is your security and AV all in one.

Root your phone and install a custom rom.

    • I tried every Gcam version & distribution I could find on the P30. I had no luck, so unfortunately I don't think Gcam is an option.
I'm in the same boat at the OP.

Plus no security or OS updates in ages, even though other international markets got it. No idea why Australia misses out :-(

the camera quality has gone downhill

How has the camera quality gotten worse over time?

    • Shots have looked overprocessed since the last few updates and its been a hit and miss with autofocus

Huawei P30 is a great phone, my replacement was Samsung galaxy S21 ultra, only disappointment of Samsung is the battery life. Rest is better.

I had the same issue with a Mate 20 Pro. They are just too good. I tried a Samsung S20 FE and a Pixel 5 and they both felt like downgrades.
I recently started using an iphone 13 mini. It's not much better or anything but it's fine, and not worse in any big way, except maybe the missing zoom lens. I miss the fingerprint reader and iOS can be crap, but it has a pretty nice physical feel and I like the smaller size. It's at least something of a differentiator I guess?

But I also kinda set this up before some travel, where I'd be relying on esim. Forced myself to give it a shot I guess. I did the same with the pixel though, and 6 months later went back to the Huawei. I don't seem to feel as restless with the iphone, so it may be a keeper.

A pixel 7 (pro) seems like a contender too. Especially since it has face id and screen fingerprint, which are both great to have
