[Switch] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Digital Edition) $53.30 (33% off) @ Nintendo eShop

930

Daughter has been talking smack lately about how MLG she is at Mario Kart 8 (since her one go at it when she was in Yr 4 and the teacher had an end of year party day…)

Went looking for a copy (to teach her a lesson in humility, and because I'm petty like that :D), but even second hand copies are selling for $50+. Logged onto Deku Deals last night to put a watchlist on this game and to check price history and woke up this morning to it being 33% off for the digital edition… Even cheaper than the Amazon physical copy. It is the equal lowest price for the digital edition and the last time it was this price was Feb, 2022…

So, guess who is going to get humiliated at opening their mouth about how good they are at Mario Kart… Yep, probably me… No, actually, it's most definitely me…

Cheers, good reminder that a few other Mario games are same price. Picked up new Super Mario Bros u deluxe.

    Such a good game.
I'm still playing this game since the Switch Launch, with my partner.

    • +4

Couldn't you just play it online, why do you need a partner?

  • Great game that got me through lockdowns! Even better with the booster course expansion passes

    • Do you have to pay extra for the new courses?

      • +2

        Yes. Nintendo cheaped out

        • Not bad value, about $30 for 48 courses?

          • +10

@splicer: But the base game was released 2014 and has an RRP of $79.95. The extra tracks should've been free IMO

            • +1

@Guybrush57: The DLCs for the 2014 Wii U version, has already been included as part of the sticker price for the updated Switch version.

The booster pass is for new tracks (re)made exclusively for the Switch version.

            • +2

@Guybrush57: The extra courses are essentially Mario Kart 9.

          • +2

@splicer: Too bad it's not on sale too

  • +2

    I’m confused.
Does digital deluxe have more content like the DLC, or do we still have to buy the booster pass?

    • i want to know this also

edit: the booster is shown in the link

    • +7

'Deluxe' is just a way to differentiate it from Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U. You still need to pay for the DLC.
Edit: it includes the DLC from the Wii U version.

        ignore this imn wrong

  • Excellent price. It's $58.99 on Amazon if anyone wants a physical copy.

  • Downloaded game can only be played on the console its downloaded to right? If you sell switch later can’t play?

    • -1

I believe it's linked to the Nintendo account you buy it with, so if you sign in with that account to another device you can then download it and play it, but you can't lend it to your family**/friends/neighbour/mistress.

I'm always torn between digital/physical for this reason but the huge advantage of digital is if you do move around with your switch, you don't need to carry the cartridge, or with little kids, risk losing them!!

** Except if you're added them as a family account I believe!

      • +1

Well you will lose them when Nintendo decide to shut up the eshop

        • +1

No you won't. You can redownload purchases.

      • -1

You can't share games across consoles with family. It sticks with the account it was purchased on and that switch its registered to.

I have my mates on family account to split NSO + Expansion but we cannot access each other's digital library

  • +1

I play this with both my sons. Probably one of the best games out there for parents to play with their kids.

    • Yep. Even small kids and adults can have fun together.

Other best games for family include:

      • Super Mario 3D World
      • Rayman Legends/Origins
      • Boomerang Fu

Still great fun, though my wife and I play a bit differently - if I go flat out, she ends up in the middle of the pack getting hit with shells and doesn't enjoy it. We've worked out it's more fun for us both if I hang back behind her and try and keep anyone from getting too close so she gets the win. Harder for me than winning races, still end up with all gold trophies.

    • +1

I might have to try that! Mario Kart isn't fun for me anymore since I absolutely smoke all my friends and family. (Not because I'm an elite gamer, more like I've memorised the maps and they haven't.)

      • +1

Uh, you're an elite gamer amongst your friends and family then. :)

        • +1

I am an elite performer in an exclusive team of talented individuals, but I also highly value teamwork, communication, and facilitating inclusivity.

    • So if you chose a bike, you would technically be a bikie?

  • +1

You'd have to be crazy to buy this on eShop when resale is basically the price of the game new.

    • +4

For many people this is a timeless game they'll never sell.

The argument for physical media for $7 more is much compelling, given the recent 3DS shop closures.

        • I didn't neg. You can check your votes, so why are you blaming me?

      • +1

Might never sell my physical version.. but I can still lend it to as many people as I want.

I've seen people make the argument that they have no option but to buy 1st party digitally, otherwise their kids will lose the carts and end up buying them AGAIN. What they need is a child proof lock for the cartridge slot. Not trying to be nasty.. 6 games easily lost is the cost of a whole new console.

    • +4

Agree, $7 more for a physical copy is a no brainer!

Still expensive though considering the game has been out for a few years now.

      • +1

Yeah, the only good thing about their pricing structure is the new Zelda game being $74 on release where as PS5 games try stitch you for like $120 or something ridiculous like that. Kind of encourages you to buy the game on release instead of waiting until it's old.

        • +2

The most competitive pricing is definitely on release. Not knowing what direction the next console could go, with this precedence, TotK could still be sold for +$79 in 2028 when the next major entry in the series comes out.

(I had to check release years of post 2000s games for that estimated guess and now my back hurts)

          • +2

@formulated: Yeah man, i remember buying mario odyssey day 1 and it's barely gotten any cheaper.

  • +8

Why go digital? I had a mate over last week and took a game out of the switch and placed it on top of my PS4. Few days later I'm unable to find the game and have spent half a day looking for it and have pulled everything out of the room…

Eventually I found it. My three year old had put the game cartridge into the slot in my PS4 where the game discs go. Only the tiniest bit of the cartridge was visible….. Guh

    • +2

      Seems like a ‘you’ problem.

  • Does JB price match the eshop?

    • No. But you can always try.

  • +1

So with the booster pack, is there any way to get it cheaper than buying it from the Nintendo store? Looks to be circa $35

    • That's what I want to know too, this and the Pokemon DLC, can you buy eshop gift cards or something?

      • Yes, there are eShop gift cards. If you can get them on sale somewhere, then that's your value save.

        • dam rare enough though .. waiting now to get some credits topped up.

    • +1

You can suscribe to NSO (with expansion pack) famlily plan and share it with 8 people. That is only like $13 a year per person.

  • +6

I literally had to look up what MLG meant… Google said major league garbage… But i pressed onwards, eventually google suggested that it ment basically good when i asked about in chat…
Just say good, it's like 1 extra letter and u don't need to press shift! 🤦‍♂️

    • I think it's "Major League Gamer"?

Kids these days don't remember a time when there weren't loads of literal pro gamers who make enough money that it's their actual factual day job to play video games.

  • I didn't know about dekudeals. Thank you OP! Im after a discount on Zelda games and FF XIII remake for the switch.

    • +1

Very useful for price charting. You can see the lowest price ever, how often sales are (some titles may only be discounted once a year), sort by metacritic scores, sort by play time. The very definition of getting the most bang for your buck and never paying full price again - or when you do pay full price it's because you can see something has never been on sale in 4 years etc.

Worth looking on eBay for Zelda. Search and use the sidebar to view Sold items / Completed listings to see they go for around $45-$55.

    Did you teach your children?

    • +1

      Yeah, I need closure.

    • +1

Apparently Minecraft released a new game type, so the “Mario Kart is just gonna have to wait, dad”… or so I’m told… :D

  • We're still playing the WiiU version even though we have a Switch #TightArse
