Received an email from Boost Mobile regarding the plan changes this afternoon.

From time to time the prices of our services are reviewed, and the decision has been made to increase the prices of our plans from 4 July 2023. We know any price rise is hard and it's not a decision that has been taken lightly.

What does this mean for you?
From 4 July 2023, the price of some of our plans will increase and more data will be added to those plans.

Wow. Another price hike… It was 150 2 years ago for the 12 months plan..

    • +15

They 'got rid' of the $150 and replaced it with the $200…now jacking to $230…

Hopefully my local convenience store still has $150 recharge vouchers.

    • The Telstra prepaid $150 now does 12 months with 60GB (currently with a bonus 30 for total 90GB) which I moved mum too. Telstra is increasing prepaid prices too though $150/60GB is becoming $160/70GB but that’s probably still ok I think

      • +1

Warning the Telstra $150 is 6 month expiry (yes I see the one 12 month (error I think) on the SIM starter description top). I suggest you take screengrab if you have taken this up.

    • The $100 6 month plan was the ticker I reckon

  • +1

Lovely timing, my one year is up next month!

  • inflation!

    • +34

No, inflation is just an excuse. Most of these companies use it as an opportunity to jack up the prices. It never goes down once inflation is normalized.

      • Yep, prices never go back down and sizes never go back up.

        • Phone companies often increase GB sizes. Including in this post

          • @Tleyx: I was referring to shrinkflation of grocery items

            • @reactor-au: They sometimes offer larger sizes which are cheaper per kg

          • +1

@Tleyx: People who have access to wifi at home / work don't need all that data.

      • +4

no shit, inflation is the change in prices, it's never been negative so prices would never go down

        • +1

          @omgitzdavid that's not quite what inflation is…

        • +1

Yeah, not quite getting how people think inflation is a 2 way street, or that "an opportunity to jack up the prices" is somehow not inflation. Like inflation is some mysterious force that works it's own will?

          • +2

@afoveht: Opportunistic price jacking to increase profits and price adjustments for inflation are two discrete phenomena

            • @0jay: The inflation that adjustments must be made for are caused by others' opportunistic print jacking. They are the same thing, it just depends where you want to start T equals zero, or who starts first.

All prices in a "free market" are opportunistic. No one sells for less than they (dare to) think will bring most profit.

              • +2

@afoveht: Adjustments for inflation are motivated by a need to equalise costs of doing business including, for eg, materials, staff and production. These adjustments keep profits constant ceteris paribus relative to sales.

When profits increase significantly following price adjustments without a corresponding increase in sales then those price ‘adjustments’ were calibrated to increasing profits.

When this is done during a substantial cost of living increase due to stagnant wages and rising inflation then such price increases can be said to be stealth profit seeking manoeuvres under cover of inflation.

      • +6

Covid, Ukraine, floods, drought, La Nina, global warming, supply chain issues.

Seems like these companies just use these as excuses a lot of the time to increase prices, because some of them are making record profits.

      • +1

It can't be inflation simply because:

        1. Mobile providers like Boost don't build infrastructure
        2. They only have low fixed costs such as labour / employees.
        3. Online business model. It doesn't cost additional to add/ subscribe a new customer to a mobile plan. Marginal cost would be zero.

I wonder how it works if you buy a recharge voucher now and then try to use it after the price rise.

    • +4

It should work based on the FAQ here.

      https://news.boost.com.au/plan-updates/

From 4 July 2023, vouchers available for purchase will be changing to align to our new plan prices. If you’ve previously purchased a voucher at an old recharge value, you can still redeem it. This applies to vouchers purchased online and in-store.

The real deal is buying vouchers before 4th July.

      • +3

However, it is unclear in the FAQ. A $30 recharge voucher may not be used for a $35 recharge. Hence, one may have to pay the difference when redeem it.

    • Most likely to pay the difference when redeem it.

Price rise announcements are now bargains?

    • +4

I don't think price rise announcements are bargains.

      • I must be blind. I see no $60 plan.

    • +1

      Agree.

  • +15

A price rise is not a deal.

    • +1

Recharge $70 is a deal with more data but no price increase.

    • +1

      Yep, we "deal" with it

  • +2

Insurance has gone up heaps this year. The percentage increase was crazy.

ING removing international ATM fee rebate.

    Boost mobile increasing prices.

Might have to start going tight on some things.

    • What was your %?

      • Went from $160/month to $210

        • OMG 31.25%

    • Insurance has gone up because it's your third year, it your profile has increased. Mine went down marginally

      • I've had this policy for almost a decade. It's building insurance.

        • maybe they now think your area is at risk of floods or other adverse weather conditions.

  • +3

    Too mucking fuch!

  • +5

Cap 5G speeds, then increase price.. are we going backwards?

  • +4

This needs to be on the forums not the deals page.

  • +5

Man… this profit growth mantra needs to stop. It's going to fu*king kill us all. Give us a break.

    • +1

All we can do is try to (profanity) them as hard as they (profanity) us, telcos have paid me about $100 to use their services over the last 12 months 😉

Just gotta be willing to swap around every month or every few months and you can get service (with heaps of data) for basically nothing.

  • +4

OzB has a new low for a bargain.
    Price rises are NOT bargains.

    • Don't worry. Cashrewards may still do free/profit deals after that. Only more data to squander.

  • stay home and use wifi?

  • What’s the bargain here ?

  • Not a deal it's a price increase

  • Why are price rises a deal

  • +3

$150 to $200 to $230… Within 24 months with capped speeds?

  • -1

Woolworths mobile's gonna increase price too but only for long expiry plans.

  • Was considering porting back but these price increases puts a full stop to that

  • Ah thanks for the reminder

Very useful if you are not using Boost and looking to port in the future

  • -2

    Terrible internet speed

  • Where's the bargain?

  • Telstra presently has better $30 and $40 offerings.

Couldn't believe this when I got the email today.

    • They are set to increase from 4 July as well.

  • Yeah I would have titled it with price increase first

  • I have really been looking forward to paying more for less. Woot Woot 🙌🎉

  • LOL no bargain - just a press release of new pricing

  • price rise and posted as a bargain??

  • I've been using Boost Mobile for the last few years mainly for it's voicemail, are there any other companies that have the same voicemail service? sending a voice file as MMS. I've tried Amaysim, unfortunately you have to dial a number then select an option to listen to the latest voicemail, instead of your voicemail being delivered to your messages.

    • Yeah I ported from boost to voda last year, it was sad having to deal with voda voicemail

  • No deal 👎

  • Recently went with the $99 Coles deal for their 365 day plan. No way in hell I'm paying $230 (there was no way I was paying $200 either).

  • +1

    No

  • +2

Bye Boost. Not happy with the price hike. Anyway, a good time to switch to another provider once my current 12 month plan expires next month. I'm sick of Boost blocking two of my apps from working. They were never able to resolve my issues.

  • +2

I mean, RRP posts are one thing… but posting price rises as a deal??
Also negging because 28 day/recharge contract terms are dodgy at best and I would never use a carrier that used this method of billing it’s users.

  • I recharged today as it was expiring and they gave me a $30 discount on the $200 recharge. Was a pleasant surprise. $30 discount offer ends 12 May. Could be a targeted offer.

    • Hi Peon,

Did you have to ask for a $30 discount? or did they offer it? Also was it Boost live chat/support or by calling them?

      • I just went to recharge via the app and it showed $170 in lieu of the $200 one. Didn't have to ask them for it.

        Receipt says:

        $30 Off

Get $30 off this $200 recharge. Special offer for you. Offer ends 12 May 2023.

        • Thanks for the update on that Peon.

By chance where you on the $150 Boost prior to the price moving to $200 or were you on the $200 yearly plan already?

          • @zztrader: My previous recharge last year was $200, but got that $50 rebate.

            • @Peon: Wow Peon, your a discount magnet, well done mate 👍

I am due to recharge in the first couple of days in May, fingers crossed they can do discount 🤞

If anybody else out there experiences such discounts then please sound off :)

    • Just been on the live chat, this is indeed a random offer. I asked for a discount (have been a customer for years now) and no dice.

  • I guess they can't afford to keep subsidising the 'SIM slutters'?

  • +3

Boost needed to CUT their prices - with a one to one GB:$ ratio being the most expensive level that makes sense.

This is 1:1.5 and so well out of order. I guess that people will continue to desert Boost - for the vast majority of people it just doesn't add up.

  • Yikes!
I can swap to $22 for 7GB now instead of $30 for 20GB (which I never even come close to using)

I guess I may be one of the few who may save some money with the price hike

  • Glad i changed to moose

  • Rip cashback

  • For all the complaints I'm not anybody offering real alternatives. I've been having a look and there is not much out there. $20 a month so I can make the odd phonecall, complete rip-off but what's the alternative?

    • The other Telcos are yet to increase their prices.

      • +1

Well I've yet to find a cheaper 12 month deal that isn't on a 2nd rate carrier

        • Optus/Amaysim consistently shrinks data inclusion for the popular $30/$40 plans recently.

  • That's shit news, not to mention deal.
