  • Why use ABS over PETG?

    • Stronger and high temp melting point.

      • Thanks, so I guess the downside is the smell? Is it really as bad as they say?

        • Yep

        • IMHO ABS is harder to print and may require an enclosure for larger prints, ABS changes dimensions more with temperature changes.
I'm not sure it's stronger, PETG is more flexible.

For me, the higher melting point is the only advantage of ABS over PETG.

          • @DmytroP: ABS is definitely stronger but doesn't have any flex. PETG is slightly weaker but has the flex. Different use cases.

            • @Tacooo: On a few tests I have seen, ABS and PETG were quite close, ABS may be stronger but not significantly. PLA was in some cases surprisingly stronger than ABS and PETG but more rigid.

        • Not at all. I print ABS in my office all the time.

          • @Tacooo: Can I ask what brand - I have only printed with one roll of ESUN ABS+ and found the smell to be scary bad. An enclosure helped but I still wouldn't want to be in the same room. It put me off trying any more ABS.

@foonman: I think my latest was Aurarum but I've done eSun before. Different strokes I guess…

    • In some cases, lower-end printers like the Ender 3-V2 will require a hotend change to handle PETG printing temperatures without heating the PTFE tubing to dangerous temps. I personally don't really get a PETG printing smell though.

      • +1

ABS usually requires a slightly higher temperature than PETG, so it's not really an advantage.

  • I'm of two minds with ABS+. On the one hand you can get away without an enclosure but on the other hand you can't vapour smooth it.
