    here we go again

    • This is where the fun begins

  • ah shit here we go again. Sad they blocked recycling. @wookiemonster do you think EFTPOS gift card will be stopped from terminal as payment?

    • Blocked recycling?

      • +2

Just last week a change occurred at checkouts where you can no longer buy gift cards using gift cards. So essentially what you could do before was buy a gift card at a discount and then use that gift card to buy another gift card at a discount. You could effectively (re)cycle through gift cards, multiplying the discount.

        • +1

Dang. Wish I'd thought of this before they closed the loophole. Thanks for the explanation.

        • They stopped allowing using Coles gift cards to pay for gift cards? Or stopped allowing these prepaid MC/Visa to pay for them..?

        • Can you buy them using flyby dollars?

          • +1

@furyou: That has been blocked for at least over a year at Coles, so I would be surprised if it worked now.

        • I can confirmed it was changed last Wed. Last Tues I used the Coles Myer GC to pay for the master card it was ok and on Wed I tried paying with the Coles Myer GC again to buy the master card and had a invalid product mix message.

      • +2

The money-go-round has ground to a halt.

    • +1

It would not be overly surprisingly to me if more prepaid gift cards were blocked as payment methods for any gift cards at Coles. Coles seems intent on stopping customers from using gift cards to purchase gift cards.

      • What if you bought a grocery item together with one the gift cards, would payment using the prepaid mastercard/visa cards still not work?

        • If you are referring to Coles refusing to process the card (i.e. the Invalid Product Mix error), it will not matter whether you are purchasing the gift card by itself or with a grocery item. Coles’ payment processor will refuse to process the card if it sees a gift card being purchased in the transaction, regardless of what else is being purchased in the transaction.

        • +1

Only if you know the secret item.

    • They were blocked as an invalid product mix during the Vanilla Visa promo.

  • Do we get Flybuys points with these too?

  • I did not notice that "Limit of 5 Gift Cards per Flybuys account per day." but my wife and I were processing 5 cards each next to each other at the same time at the self checkout terminal with the same Flybuy number with no issues. I guess maybe we either tapped in the Flybuy number at the same time to get the 10% discount on both POS terminals or that limit is not real.

    • +7

Check your receipt for the price you paid. You can buy as many as you want but discount will only apply once per flybuy account per day.

      • I thought total amount paid would be showed prior on the screen. Not that you pay without knowing what you’re paying

        • +3

it does but people pay without thinking, i almost did. In the comments of the last vanilla cards sale there were talks of some people at the front counter demanding refund because they didn’t read the fine print.

      • This almost got me today. I did a double take luckily, just before i tapped to pay and figured out the discount was wrong.

      • +1

Yes, I got 2x$257 + 3x$105 and a line below on my receipt that said "Flybuys offer: "-$82.90" for a total of $746.10 on both receipts.
This is the correct discount I should expect for that particular combo. Also checked my bank account statement and I see the discounted amount there.

        • That’s great news!

  • +1

just bought 3x 100 yesterday for 2000 points ea… the shop kept all cards at counter, now knew why

    • Me too….. bought already

    • There will be new deliveries for 10% off sale, but not flybuys bonus points sale.

  • NSW ACT again. Not long ago it was vanilla visa card

Is there a way to buy 5 of this card and then load all balance on to one card or something like google pay and then use that one card for ongoing payment ?

What I am talking is transferring $1250 to one card not just saving five card as payment method in PayPal.

This saves hassle of keeping five cards and spending straight away to avoid hacking?

    • Nope

      • Looks like such an amazing thing missing on earth 😁

Hope someone will let us top-up debit card using credit card or debit card using gift card or gpay. / Apple pay using MasterCard to make it happen…!

    • Probably only if you buy JBHIFI card.

  • People in Victoria experienced some issues with the ACTIVATION of the cards being declined e.g. 4 card were approved, and the 5th card wasn't. Activation happens after you've paid for them, so getting a refund is an epic fukaround… esp if the staff aren't sure how to do it i.e. refund gift cards

    • +1

Usually only the store manager can do it and they only work up to 4-5pm

      • +1

Experienced this. Def made the whole deal net negative for me :P

        • Yeah it can happen and inconvenient coming back to get a refund

Worse is that they can see your payment if you used gift cards before

      • +1

I never spent over $1k in a purchase for giftcards. Just spilt the purchase into two.

Failed activation may be due to card hacked before activation, though.

    • I experienced this at self checkout. Had to get the manager to process all 5 for me at the front desk. Basically the self checkout would freeze on the 5th card and even the manager wasn't sure what was going on.

      • Probably $1k+ spend issue.

        • Can confirm this was the issue on self checkout during the latest QLD round of this deal. Happened to my dad a couple of times at self checkout that the 5th card would put it over $1000 and then the transaction over $1000 authorisation required would get stuck in a loop and freeze the POS terminal.

Only seemed to happen every so often and not consistently across stores or even the same store.

    • Yes I had one card did not get approved at check out have to get refund but the worst part is I was told replacement wont be able to get discount, so only can get 4 card yesterday

    • +1

I had this happen last night but it actually ended up in my favour. 1/5 cards declined so the cashier with the assistance of her manager, refunded me $257 despite me only paying $231 for the discounted card. The refund only took a minute as well.

Meanwhile you get all the base points and flybuys dollars from that

      • -1

Yes he does. He’s offering something , if u don’t like it, u can move on with ur life lol

    • Did you just grab the temporary card in store to make the accounts or register online?

If register online, what fields can't you repeat so the account can be registered? I think if use the same residential address it will fail?

      Please share process

      • I have 5 flybuys cards under the same address and phone number. Just different names.

        • Oh - you can recycle the same phone number? I have 4 numbers between work and some $0 SIMs I've picked up from cashbacks so I just used 4 different numbers and used the dot method for a gmail account. Would have been much easier to just add them all to one number for OTP purposes.

        • Is the 5 cards in the same account or 5 different accounts?

          • @Poor Ass: 5 different emails

@daanish yes otp all to the same number.

  • +1

Managed to grab 10x $250 in VIC before all my local stores sold out - loaded on electricity and water accounts ASAP, seems like the % transaction fee for card payments doesn’t get applied, I was loading $250 exact onto the accounts and they all went through (EnergyAus & Yarra Valley Water).

    • +3

The card fee comes on the next bill.

  • +3

Can I use these to pay off some of my HECS/HELP?

    • I like what you thinking.

    • According to google you can pay off some of your HECS balance using Government EasyPay, so yes.

    • +1

Yes see this thread and the child comments - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13591135/redir

      • Thanks that's really helpful. The index will be around 7-8% this year so I might pay a few K's off

        • I did similar earlier this year. Paid off my full balance. Between an estimated 7% inflation and a little more than 7% discount via these cards I called it a 14% swing in my favour.

Just keep in mind that you'll still cop the indexation on any remaining balance as of 1 June 2023 and each card can take a few business days to process so I'd be making the payments ASAP after getting hold of the cards.

wife got 5 x $250 in one go and only got discount for the first one. store manager at night called up HQ but couldn't do anything and told her to call flybuys. she gives up. i think it was because i used the same flybuys account earlier in the day to buy 6 x $100 cards in separate transactions perhaps so probably not worth calling up flybuys as they will just say its against terms and conditions? poor form local coles store not taking ownership of the problem and fixing it.

    • Can I ask if on your wife's receipt it only showed a discount of 10% for one card or did it look like the full proper discount for all five cards but you were charged more?
IE. I;m trying to work out that if someone who was buying these cards will be able to tell if they are getting the 10% discount across all 5 cards before payment or not on the screen or does it look all good but something screwy occurs when paying.

    • +8

Why is it poor form? The advertising clearly says there is a limit of 5 cards per flybuys card per day. You won't get the discount if you purchase more than 5 cards on the one day. And the checkout will show the total amount and total discount before you purchase.

    • +4

Why should Coles (or FlyBuys) fix an error where you broke T&C?

    • +4

      The lessons are

      1. Only the keenest person for this deal in a family buy them

      2. Check the final price before payment or even work it out before enter the store

      • +1

        3. Have multiple Flybuys cards.

edit: interesting I have to italic that "3." dot point because it appears as a 1. with the Markdown auto formatting

        • -1

Unless you intend to abuse such promotions and get around limits, for a family, having 1 Flybuys is more economical. You get to pool the spend points of 2++ people into one card to redeem rewards faster.

          • +1

@nsingh21: With the change in T&Cs Coles seems to have rolled out for this kind of deal we've now created some burner accounts for additional promo redemptions but otherwise we operate a standard pooled family account for day to day spending.

            • -1

@daanish: Yep makes sense…but still a lot of people miss out on the cards because some buy wayy to many 🥹

          • +1

@nsingh21: This is not true at all. Having multiple accounts makes you eligible for more offers with generally less minimum spend.

  • Anyone know if these count as a cash advance on a credit card? Seems like you are transferring money from one Eftpos card to another.

    • +1

Counts as credit from a "I have a new AmEx that requires $3000 spend in 2 month deal" perspective.
Edit: Also counts as spending in a Supermarket as opposed to getting a 'gift card'. This was useful when we all went to do the HIVE deal for cash back.

    • +2

Simple purchase, with a supermarket MCC. Not a cash advance.

  • +1

Does this work at a 'Coles Local' store?

  • -1

I got a feeling Coles will say they run out of stock in the first 60 seconds.

    • Probably at most 24/7 stores.

  • Can't use Coles GC to buy these?

    • +1

      Correct. They've closed that loophole.

  • Can I use this to pay council dues at Auspost?

    • +5

      Maybe.

      Two factors to consider:

      • Some billers will not let you pay using Mastercard or Visa at Australia Post, because Australia Post charges billers higher fees for processing Mastercard or Visa payments. I do not know whether the council you want to pay off will let you use Mastercard or Visa at Australia Post. (If it does, please be aware that you may be charged additional fees for Mastercard payments and/or paying at Australia Post. It is best to check your rates notice, as it should mention any additional fees on there.)

      • Some Australia Post staff will not allow customers to use any prepaid gift cards as a payment method for bills. The problem is that the EFTPOS terminals at Australia Post make it extremely hard to conceal the card you want to swipe, so a staff member paying attention and looking out for customers trying to use gift cards as a payment can stop you.

      • +5

Wookie have you considered making a FAQ forum for prepaid card?

Feels like everytime this deal pops up people ask the same questions 😂😂

        • +3

I have a feeling that people would still ask them because it seems no one ever checks the FAQs. That said, replying to each comment with RTF-FAQ would be fun.

        • +1

I have considered doing that on the Gift Card FAQ page, because there is already a section for Prepaid Gift Cards, but I have not really made up my mind on what the new FAQs would be.

That, plus what @daanish said below holds true. If you are on your phone (for example), it is not easy to navigate from this comments section over to the Gift Card FAQ page (and you have to know the page exists in the first place), scroll through the wall of text that is the questions in order to find the answer to your question. That, plus if you ask here, you can get experiences of other people, not just me.

Sometimes it just makes more sense to ask here.

          • @WookieMonster: Hi @WookieMonster I tried looking for info on setting-up the pin after purchase, but I can't seem to find an answer for this one. Will I be blocked from using the card online IF I have already set a pin straight after purchasing the card? I tried multiple times to use my card online but it keeps getting declined. I noted your comment on sometimes 20% of the amount will be deducted for authorization, but that wasn't the case when I tried it online. Thank you in advance!

            • +1

@joe900joe: How did you set the PIN for the first time?

              • On your first instore transaction at a merchant?
              • Through the balance check website?

Someone else mentioned that setting a PIN online for the first time can actually cause your gift card to be blocked, so you will need to call customer support in order to unblock your gift card.

Btw, setting a PIN on the website for the first time does not make much sense, because you can set anything as a PIN on the EFTPOS terminal for the first time without any issues. You also do not add any protection to your card except stopping someone from picking up your card and using it without your authorisation… although the workaround in that case would be to reset the PIN through the balance check website.

              • +1

@WookieMonster: I did it through the balance check website. I bought 3 $100 last week and did it for all immediately after buying. I was able to use the cards physically in-store, but not online. I bought a $250 one this week and it does seem to be blocked now (can’t do a balance check to reset the pin online). Waiting on the customer support phone now for almost an hour 😅

Ohh okay I thought it was safer to add a pin immediately because I read there were issues with balances being deducted by unknown transactions. Will keep that in mind. Thanks!

                • @joe900joe: If you think about it, adding a PIN for the first time via the website means that the card is locked up, so no one (not even you) can redeem it! That’s one way to say no to the hackers…

                  Any luck with customer support?
