Hi all, LENOVO micro PCs this week. Ranging from 4th Gen to 8th gen. Unfortunately hard to source 9th gen and above as they are still in use in most companies.

Best value today is the M700, with i5-6th gen but no SSD. With SSD price dropping, you can easily source a 2TB for $130ish. Or you might have spare ones lying around, just chuck them in and make it nice tiny home server.

Note, M700 Tiny takes m.2 sata ssd and also 2.5 inch drive.
For those who need extra usb ports and serial port, the Expansion box for $24.99 will help.

    • There are models that can use a riser card(see above comment mentioning pfsense) otherwise you may have some luck with a m.2 to Ethernet card.

  • What's the difference between m700 vs m710q ?

    • +1

In the m710q, the NVME and RAM can be access through the bottom.

Not sure if there are any other differences.

    • +1

I think the M710q in the other listing had wifi . But it was a wifi dongle
I dont think the M700 here has this but you could add this.
In both listings the 700 and 710 both appear to be intel gen6
The M710 came with "Charger + Cable" while the M700 here has ""Come with original power supply only.""
Not sure if that means the M700 needs a power cable supplied by you?
If any of this is incorrect please post correction

I have the 6400T version of this from the same seller. Great seller and fast shipping. I got it for $109 from a previous deal, installed another 8GB Ram ($27 from Amazom), spare BX500 240GB. I am using it as a hyper-v server with Win11 Pro. Awesome little PC. Connected to TV with a DP to HDMI cable from amazon to watch AppleTV etc, also running PiHole and Home Assistant as VMs. It would be awesome if M.2 slot also support NVMe but it is only SATA as mentioned.

  • Is this 2 X 4gb or 1 X8gb of ram?

  • Is it any good for Truenas? Bought 2x16TB from recent Amazon deal but havenot got a any NAS yet. Was looking Synology ds220+ but not decided. Can anyone please share your thoughts if it would be good to run as a NAS? I need to use it for CCTV recording, Plex and Photo storage.

  • Last comment about VMware ESXI on small form factor (SFF) or tiny mini PCs (this one, or other Lenovo/HP/Dell mini, most of them only 1 liter) if you are interested:
I tried many of them, most of them work without modifications. Two more recent models may be better choices if you attempt to use for a long term or for applications other than homelab
    1) Dell poweredge T40, 128Gb max RAM (ECC), comes with Xeon e2224g (4 cores). But surprisingly 8700 (8 cores, 16 threads) also works. However, you do loss ECC features though either ECC or non-ECC works ( not mixed); You do need adpator to install NVME SSD.
    2) Dell OptiPlex 3060 Tower (not mini), comes with same chipset specification as T40, such that also support Xeon cpu & ECC.

  • Does it have a m.2 NGFF port?

    Cheers

  • No hdmi?

    • You can just use a Display Port to HDMI - make sure you buy an Active one for best compatibility.

  • Are they single 8 or dual 4 memory? Anybody know?

    • Probably 4gb X 2 as the rep hasn't answered the question

  • Is this any good for Plex server with External HDD

    • I'm running Unraid on one and use a internal SSD as the cache and then three external USB drives. One for parity and two for storage.

I'd prefer additional internal storage but my old one only has space for one SSD.

  • is it still a good deal if I bundle 32GB ram and 1TB SSD which comes to $254.32 with the voucher or should I just buy those separately?

  • Does anyone know whether the TIOs listed above are compatible with M720q? TIA

  • Those using them as home servers, do you add additional storage by USB hard drives? I'm running Unraid on one and use a internal SSD as the cache and then three external USB drives. One for parity and two for storage.

  • what type of ssd comes with 1TB config?

  • How can I rackmount this? Can this be run as a home media server? 4k-8k atmos movies?

Hi @MetroCom, could you please do a No RAM & No SSD config for M720Q? Thank you.

  • I'm wondering about something like this to store fob accesses for our strata garage entrance

currently the fob access controller box is not internet-connected and has an internal clock that loses time at 3.5 minutes per month and I'm bringing my laptop to download the fob access history and update and correct the time clock from my laptop every month so the time records don't get too far out of whack from the adjacent CCTV box - which is a bit of a PITA

current fob access history I've downloaded is only a few MB total so even without an SSD I'm wondering if the 8GB RAM might suffice to hold this kind of data

the input from the controller to my laptop is just a USB2 cable so just that and maybe an internet cable to update the time and I'd be good - would you think this box might be suitable ?

    • The clock in this could be no more accurate…

  • Thanks, ordered the 720Q

  • Best raspberry pi killer.

  • Assuming you're not in need of a mass amount of storage, this is excellent for cheap home self-hosting solutions (both upfront cost and upkeep/electricity cost).

i.e. home assistant, dedicated game servers, adguard, pihole, Nginx etc

  • No more m720q i5-8500T. Getting any more stock?

    • 16gb available it seems

Does anyone know if the ssd supplied are brand new or used?

    • If the unit is refurbished you would have to take a guess and assume the SSD is used.

  • I bought the M900 with a slightly slower CPU but with a 256gb SSD for $176 in November - and thought that was good value. It's running HA via Proxmox without a sweat - although I did bump up the RAM to 16gb so I could add a couple of other things.

    For $122 this is nice.

  • So I received my 720q yesterday.

It looks like there is space for a second M2 NVME drive, but no connector. Does anyone know what's needed to make it work?

    • The NVME is on the bottom of the unit.

  • For those interested, my 256gb version came with a Samsung MZVLW256HEHP PM961 SSD (an OEM 960 EVO). According to CrystalDiskInfo it's been on for 1967 hours with 5026gb Read and 18486gb Writes, which apparently is still 98% good.

I have to say this is a great little machine. Turned it on and a fresh Windows install took a couple of minutes, with the Win 11 Pro license key already embedded. Connected to my monitor via DP and have 4k @ a nice smooth 60hz.

The 8gb RAM seems sufficient but have 32gb waiting to go in.

Will order an Intel AX210 wireless card for wifi/bluetooth.

  • Got the m720q from another eBay store. It was as new condition. No dust. No signs of use. Still has the protective stickers. Even the power adapter is unused. Must be excess unused stock. Best deal. Ordered 8400T and got a 8500T.

  • My unit has a 8gb memory so 1 slot free. Can i put a 16gb stick in it to make it 24gb total?
