What's wrong with the Prime series, asking for a friend cough

Nothing, had a b450 prime in my pc for years and very stable 😂

It'll do just fine. Missing the usb-c ports if thats a concern :)

Back in my day you had so many slots - ISA/PCI/AGP. It's odd seeing boards with only 2.

its mATX, so there is that.

but would imagine it gets annoying when you see just two PCI slots on ATX (thought havent noticed it much myself as a pattern)

    • But it has 3 slots.

  • B450 motherboards also taking ages to go down in price

    • I think unlike most b550 boards it's supports the sub 3000 cpus

      • Afaik it supports 5000 series with bios update. (May be not all the models? I didn't check)

        • Most do, if not all. The bigger thing you miss out on is newer GPUs run PCIE v4, while the b450s are v3

@Jay-Ros: On spec sheet yes its gen4 vs gen3, but if you’re doing mostly gaming, afaik the modern gpus still cannot quite fully utilise the bandwidth of gen3 even bus. So you won’t really notice any difference in performance.

Is there any point buying a b450 board at this point? B550 seems really similar in price and offers gen 4 pcie.

    • Get B550 if you are getting a CPU that supports Gen4 PCIe AND want to prepare for future graphics cards that will one day fully utilise that Gen4 PCIe speed.

At the moment, apparently even the RTX 4090 is incapable of maxing out the Gen4 PCIe speed, so there is no immediate benefit for current gamers.

According to TechPowerup tests, running RTX 4090 on Gen3 PCIe is only 2% - 3% slower than using Gen4 PCIe.

FYI: The AMD 5600g and 5700g are Gen3 PCIe so if that's your CPU then you get no advantage from a Gen4 PCIe motherboard anyway.
