Chromecast Just Won't Connect to Wi-Fi

Hi all, just switched to the new RT-AX86U. When I tried it to reconnect my chromecast 1st gen, it just won't connect to the WiFi! Tried factory resetting, and still get stuck after selecting WiFi ssid page in google home app.

Anyone know a quick fix? Thanks

    1. are you sure it is a Chomecast (by Google) and not like a Mira Cast or generic cast FOR GOOGLE CHROMECAST ??

If you think there's a wifi problem you can test by using mobile hotspots, if still not working on other wifi connections then the device is likely faulty

    • It was working before I switched over the router though. Now no, it's the original first gen chromecast.

  • Is 2.4Ghz band enabled? 1st gen chromecast might not like 5Ghz.

    • I did separate the two bands, but both are the same

Change the 2.4GHz control channel from auto to 1, 6 or 11 and apply changes. Does that help?

If that doesn't help switch off smart connect and connect the Chromecast to the 2.4GHz SSID.

    • Channel is the only one I haven't tried. Might try that. Thanks

Give it a go. I've seen things that won't connect when 2.4GHz is set to auto. After changing the channel manually it connected.

This ^ same thing happened with my Ring doorbell

I changed the 5ghz channel, and it worked! thanks!

Try changing the channel your wifi is on. I've had a random issue where a client refused to work on one specific channel

yea, changed the 5ghz channel to 36 and it worked

  • I had the same problem, even switching to 2.4ghz doesnt fix the problem. The way i fixed it is to use another phone to connect it to the same google home account

  • You may need to downgrade your wifi password to WPA2. Alot of my google home stuff doesnt like wpa3

  • Do you still have the remote control?

    • 1st Gen chromecast doesn’t have a remote does it?

      • I unno. How do you change the wifi without it? I've got a TV about with a chrome cast without a remote, I just hope I don't have to change the wifi one day.

nope, it doesn't have one. You connect through the google home app.

      • Well that's good to know. Churs.
