  • So can you just sign up to the cheapest for 2 months, then cancel after?

    • +6

      Up to*

bonus is based on what cover you get so cheapest won't get you the max bonus points

      • Thus, sign to the most comprehensive and cancel by 2 months?

Ideally when is a good window to cancel because last time I messed up?

  • You need couple/family Gold Hospital and Top Extras to get 120k points. My quote was about $875 a month, so $1750ish if you can time it exactly right.

    • $681.02 per month for me
will be 1.1 cents per point. Pretty good considering I have cover anyway

    • God that's expensive. They got to waive some cooling periods for some services as a result

Charts available here to see how many points.

Basic hospital singles cover gets just about 4k bonus points after the 60 days.

  • +1

shouldn't it belong to finance category?

  • So to get the max 150,000 points, (top hospital and top extras for couples or family) my quote came out to be $903 per month

My wife and I currently pay $500 with GMHBA per month for similar cover (Top hospital and mid extras) so would cost an extra $806 over 2 months to get 150,000 points.

Probably worth it for the points but not worth sticking around after the 2 months. I remember the last time I did this deal with Qantas, from memory I ended up paying 3 months premiums before the points dropped therefore better to set up a weekly plan.

    • Nah it drops prior to the 61 days. I did this last December.

      • If you set up to pay monthly, you pay on Day 0, 30 and 60.

When I last did this 3 years ago, I got caught out paying the extra months' premium. It may have changed since then.

Just set up to pay weekly and then you can cancel as soon as the points are credited.

        • I was able to get the difference pro-rated.

          • @nightelves: That makes sense, I never called to cancel at Day 61. I just used up the additional month and cancelled on Day 90.

Great to know they can pro-rated though

    • Based on notes from OP you need to stay for 6 months to get max 150k but only 2 months for 120k

      • Sorry yes you are correct, only 120,000 points after 2 months. Probably not worth the hassle, basically paying an extra $806 to get 120,000 points.

  • +2

OP should really emphasise "up to 120k points after 60 days".

Not available to customers who have: held a Qantas Health Insurance policy at any time in the previous 12 months; or who have held a health insurance policy with nib, AAMI Health Insurance, Apia Health Insurance, GU Health, Suncorp Health Insurance, ING, Priceline, Real Health Insurance or Seniors Health Insurance at any time in the previous 6 months.

    • yeah lucky i caught that change, used to be able to get these points every 6 months

    • thanks for pointing that out. I was looking for that disclaimer.

  • Based on single 34yo male from NSW, the best point per $ ratio is Gold Hospital with Top Extras, equating to 1.4c/point.

Worst is Basic Hospital only at 5.5c/point.

Best option with minimal outlay is Kickstart Extras, Family Extras, Active Extras or Top Extras only (no hospital cover) for 1.6-1.7c/point.

    • Just realized you can't do it if you hold NIB. Damn.

  • 0.6c per point to switch from my current insurer if I hold for 60 days. Plus a 5k referrer bonus. Seems pretty good to me.

    • 5k referral bonus is a once off. If you've already taken up this policy before than you won't get the 5k bonus.

    • It used to be 140k points for 60days
I just received my points last month

      • How long did it take to receive the bonus points?

    • Seems like you can't stack referral bonus with this deal. I tried and got an error saying so.

Keen to hear recent user experience…

Does the trick still work if we opt in for cheaper cover, and only bump up the cover before day 60 so we can get max bonus?

    • worked for me 6 months ago

  • I did a quick check, and it didn't cover for things Bupa do.

They're making that points back somewhere in the cover!

I also pay like $150 a month and for me alone, the bonus point returned was pretty garbage unfortunately.

    • Like what?

      • Also keen to know what… Clearly states what's included in each tier- are you going based on a comparison of that or further digging somewhere?

        • It would take too long to do a full company, but Qantas was more expensive and the bonus points are mainly for family.

It was very low for me like 20-40k points, and I cbf shifting constantly for a (profanity) amount of points.

If the bonus was 60-80k, I'd consider it.

You need to be paying top premium $200-$250 a month to get the decent bonus points offers.

          • @[Deactivated]: It's 60k bonus for 60 days for gold and top extras - depending on your circumstances probably looking around 1.1-1.5 cents per point plus I guess. I suspect you can "obtain" the points at a cheaper rate elsewhere hahaha

I may have been interested if they got rid of waiting periods…won't even be able to use extras cause of waiting periods.

            • @Maestrok: I thought no waiting periods?

Thats the issue, it's easier to buy points than jump through this BS.

Qantas don't offer as good as other companies, if you really go through it. They quoted me $400 for travel insurance, 4k bonus points vs $150-$200 elsewhere.

  • 5000 bonus for low coverage

But up to 12k points using the wellbeing app on qantas

  • I priced them on this offer last year and sadly for the price and benefits it really didn't stack up even with the points.

  • they wave 2 & 6 Months Waiting Period Waiver when you call

    • is this confirmed?

      • +1

Yes I called and they offered me
Obviously you need to call before signing up

  • Note that NIB has crap rebates for hospital treatments, so hopefully no one is actually looking to use the private health insurance here.

  • +4

Previously I have signed up for the cheapest. Then upped my coverage a couple of days before the day it counted for the points. Then went back down a couple of days later. So was on the top coverage for about a week but got the Max points. Made it worth it financially. Don't know if I can be bothered with the rigmarole these days.

    • Did you have to call Qantas Health to change the cover each time?

      • Yeh just a call a few days before and a few days after. Points were credited quickly. As always your mileage may vary.

I left them pretty quickly afterwards as well. From what I understand it is a pretty worthless policy.

        • This sounds like a big brain idea! Do you reckon it would still work with the current terms and conditions?

          • +1

@timmythelamb: The terms in the old deal specifically said level of cover on day 90. This one says cover over two months. I'm not sure but it doesn't read great.

            • @snb9211: The current offers T&Cs state: Qantas Points will be awarded to the primary policyholder in two stages and will be based on the level of cover held at that time: (1) up to 120,000 Qantas Points after the policy has been held for 60 continuous days, (2) up to 30,000 additional Qantas Points after the policy has been held for 180 days.

Would this wording still cover a later upgrade on day 55?

              • @steffyay: Thanks leeroys_dad for confirming.

Looks like the key wording here is "The Qantas points … will be based on level of cover held at the time"

  • Not available if you’ve recently held health insurance issued by nib.+. Lame I'm with NIB

  • So are you guys really going to reap extra benefits off your hospital and extra services instead of leaving it idle by the end of 60 days/6 months? I'm trying to figure out what I can get rebates for if for..
