I smell credit card bonus points!

    • -1

How so? You would have to buy significant amount to earn meaningful points, which is a risk if you can't spend it at places you wanted to.

      • +4

He's talking about easy spending to meet minimum spending requirement for a new credit card

        • Ah, got you. Would have to send thousands to earn enough points to cover a $25 gift card.

To meet spend requirements for bonus points makes sense, similar to cashback deals.

  • +6

It would be nice if we could pay with a bunch of partially used Vanilla Visa and Coles MC cards that have odd/leftover amounts.
Effectively consolidating the balances and making it more useful.
    I suppose wishful thinking.

    • +3

Can we buy with the coles mastercards/vanilla gift cards to reduce chances of hacking.

Potentially gift card inception as these should work at coles to rinse and repeat

    • +1

Can you just use them to pay utility bills online?

While you cannot split payment like in the shops, you can most likely pay multiple times with different amounts.

Even if you overpay, the extra will sit in your account as credit.

      • Yes but found out there’s also minimum $10 per transaction on some post bill pay

        • +1

I see, split payments at supermarket self-checkouts is a viable option too.

    • +1

Use it on Woolies online pick up order 👍

    • +1

use "loose changes" to buy woolies wish card, you can buy variable amount

  • +1

@WookieMonster asking the king of cards, can these cards be used to pay the ATO debt at myGov? Also do we know the surcharge by any chance? TIA

    • +6

Well i was able to pay my remaining tax debt with the coles mastercards a week ago

They wouldnt accept itunes gift cards though lol

    • +17

      No.

I tried to use an Activ Visa gift card on the ATO portal last year, but it was declined by Blackhawk Network.

I also noticed last night that clause 1 of the Activ Visa gift card terms and conditions specifically mentions that payments to the ATO are not permitted on Activ Visa gift cards. That was not in the terms and conditions when I tried to use it on the ATO portal last year, so I wonder whether someone lodged an AFCA complaint against Heritage Bank…

      • +5

Thanks mate, really helpful, as always.

        • +1

No worries! I also completely ignored your second question (sorry).

When I tried to use the Activ Visa gift card on the ATO portal last year, the portal indicated I would pay a 0.4% surcharge, which is the same as Vanilla Visa gift cards (and is the ATO's Visa debit card surcharge).

      • Aren’t AFCA complaints public at some point?

      • Any other restrictions you know about these compared to Coles Mastercard gift cards? Asking assuming these are less hackable than them

        • I know that Woolworths did not accept physical Activ Visa gift cards as a payment method for some gift cards (e.g. Perfect EFTPOS gift cards, Activ Visa gift cards) in their stores last year, and I assume that is still the case. I think Activ Visa gift cards on a mobile wallet face the same restrictions at Woolworths, but I am not 100% sure on that one.

I don’t think there are any restrictions on the usage of Activ Visa gift cards at Coles or BIG W.

I also think that Activ Visa gift cards are facing the same spend restrictions at supermarkets as Perfect EFTPOS gift cards. I have not got around to testing this (although I may test this tomorrow if I can find more Coles Mastercard gift cards), but I say this, because:

          • OnlyONE Visa gift cards - another gift card scheme owned by Blackhawk Network - are facing the same spend restrictions at supermarkets as Perfect EFTPOS gift cards.

          • Activ Visa is Blackhawk Network’s replacement gift card scheme for OnlyONE Visa.

          • @WookieMonster: Thanks for that info, I mostly use CMC GCs online and would buy discounted Coles or Woolies GCs for shopping instore. Would it be a good idea to buy these with CMC GCs just for the purpose of reducing the hacking probability?

            • +2

@sub102: Possibly. I don’t know whether the discounted gift card portals you use would accept Activ Visa gift cards, but if they do, Activ Visa gift cards are not a bad choice at the moment.

I have no idea how widespread fraudulent transactions are for Activ Visa gift cards at the moment, but I think it is safe to say it is not as bad as OnlyONE Visa gift cards or Coles Mastercard gift cards at this stage.

    • ATO works with Sniip via Apple Pay. You can add these cards to apple pay and try and pay an ATO bill?

    Just use cash

Tried with the coles mastercard gift card. Did not work - bank declined the transaction it says

    • +1

      Doing the Lord's work.

    • What about VISA Vanilla?

      • +1

        Vanilla works

        • @Sheng @truetypezk - noting from the King of Cards above that ATO payments do not work, are there merchants you'd be aware where Vanilla VISA is tricky to use (or doesn't work) but Activ VISA will be fine? PayPal cashouts will still be fine I assume.

Practical use case seems to recycle Vanilla VISA into this get rid of that annoying signature verification by using on mobile wallet. Other than that, not sure what would be the benefits of recycling the card.

besides from discount on purchasing fee… is there any point in buying this if not trying to reach credit card points or gifting?

    • +1

      No.

    • +6

Probably falls under "reaching credit card points" but you can buy these with an AmEx and then use it at a store that doesn't accept AmEx in order to earn AmEx points at additional retailers.

    • +3

Use it as a nice gift for your mother.

      • Get several unless you are a child.

    • Signing up to subscriptions you don't want to renew possibly? If you're one to forget.

  • +2

I think someone at Blackhawk Network has screwed up this gift card listing.

I purchased one for the express purpose of adding it to a mobile wallet (which the product page and my order page says it is possible), but when I go to activate the gift card, I instead am greeted by a registration page telling me Visa Virtual Account - Designed for Shopping Online, which appears to be the registration page for an OnlyONE Virtual Visa gift card.

The registration page is very different to the one I was greeted with when I purchased an Activ Visa CNY gift card earlier this year from Giftz.com.au.

The registration page is also asking me to accept the terms and conditions of the Visa Virtual Account before I create it, except it does not actually show me the terms and conditions nor provides me a link to view them separately.

My frustration with Blackhawk Network is only growing…

    • +1

      Just go ahead, it works.

      • You’re certainly braver than me! Thanks.

(It worked for me too, but seriously, the registration page was really throwing me off.)

        • +1

Yeah especially that phantom T&Cs LMAO.

    • If there are no terms and conditions shown and you can record the entire thing showing that, then technically and you agreeing to "no terms and/or conditions" since there is nothing shown.
Edit : I dont know if this is legally true also I'm not a lawyer

    • If you can add it to a mobile wallet (Apple/Google pay), wouldn't that make the card usable pretty much everywhere that has a physical terminal or allows Apple Pay online?

      • The issue is that I was too chicken to fill out the registration form after I read it!

The registration form says that it is for a Visa Virtual Account designed for online shopping, which should be for the OnlyONE Virtual Visa gift card, and FAQ #18 on the OnlyONE Visa gift cards website says that Visa Virtual Accounts cannot be added to mobile wallets.

However, as soon as you fill out that form, you get redirected to a page where you will be given the details of your Activ Visa gift card. That can be added to a mobile wallet (and I had no problems adding mine to a mobile wallet after going past the registration page), so my concerns above are irrelevant.

In other words, it is a case of Blackhawk Network using a registration form I had not expect them to use and had not seen them use for Activ Visa gift cards before.

Yay! Free money laundering for Mothers Day!

    • +16

At least my mother will be happy I laundered something for once.

      • +1

Did you also water the 🌿 herb garden cause you cant do the laundry with no herbs

  • +1

These cards suck, they get declined at so many places, not worth it just use cash

    • +1

Is there a dummies guide to this card somewhere or am I blind? Just been approved for a CC with a decent monthly spend so these would be handy

  • Does commbank consider buying this GC as cash advance?

  • Can this be added to Paypal?

  • First time user of something like this.. Have an HSBC CC that I want to hit a min spend on and have my Vicroads Rego due.
If I was to pay straight with HSBC CC then it wouldn't be eligible for min spend + would be paying Vicroads VISA surcharge.

Would buying this gift card, and paying with the Visa on the Vicroads portal be the advantage of hitting CC min spend, if I was happy to pay the VISA surcharge? (Beemit won't accept HSBC for BPAY due to not being AUS VISA/MC)

    • +1

Yeah that would be the way to go.

    • I have a spend $2,000 and get a $30 gift card from HSBC CC. Which is essenitally 1.5% back.

      • -1

Is that an offer for your HSBC CC?

  • Can these be used for free trials for streaming services?

  • +1

It's actually a good one to purchase if you have a new Amex card with initial spending requirement. You can simply buy them with Amex card to meet the spending requirement for sign up bonus points. Then use these gift cards (add them to google pay) for daily spending at many local stores due to outrageous Amex surcharge or not accepting Amex at all.

  • Is anyone else struggling to check the balance on these cards?

  • when adding to wallet, what expiry/name is used

    • The cardholder name should match the first and last names you provided during the registration process.

The expiry date is given to you on the webpage after you register the eGift Card (alongside the card number, CVV, etc).
