MX500 latest firmwares have been bugging in my experience, I had to return 2 due to incompatibility with dell motherboards where the drive drops out after a short period of time (but earlier builds worked fine on the same hardware). Reseller found Crucial really slow to issue firmware fixes, not sure they've fixed those issues so hence drives go back basically brand new to store maybe??. Guessing these are open box as you could sell them to another customer that does not have the same hardware.

I suppose could also be misorders.. e.g. ordered a 2TB go a 1TB send it back to reseller opened.

that said, the dodgiest computer store in my town, CPL West Melbourne, sold me drives with customer data already on it, thats before I know how dodgy they ówner of CPL was, so yeh I'd be a bit curious on what extra you get with open box storage items. :)

Wtf is this the minimal wear, shows they are used
And no full manufacturer warranty lmao msy

With as a reputable name as MSY, why would you trust them!

      At least it isn't battle-scarred

The 'new' ones are around high $70. Why risk an 'open box' for a small saving line this.

Crucial software is poo also. Runs via web browser and clunky. Got this for dads laptop (he just needed the cheapest ssd). Get what you pay for. It works yet nothing fancy.

  • I can trust it only if I can test it with softwares.

MSY + "open box" = hell no

New in box on Amazon for $79.

    • +7

I'd rather pay a few bucks more and avoid malware roulette.

    • +3

The MX500 is $85 from Amazon AU. The BX500 is $79.83

  • Product condition: OPENED BOX

It's slightly different from "open box"… Maybe the box was opened but has now been closed by the staff.

    • Thank goodness

      • Too right! If they left the box open too long, all the bits would escape!

Is that what a memory leak is?

Those days I got this for $450 and thought was a bargain

  • In the good old days of MSY the stacks of unopened boxes at the store entrance gave Indiana Jones vibes

Watch out as some MSY & Umart locations are Click and Collect only and you cannot pay when you get there….. Also be aware that some prices are internet only and if you try to pay in store make sure the price is the one on the internet before you pay..

    Lucky dip SSD LOL

Best to assume everying at MSY is open box. Purchased a new case from them a couple weeks ago, when I arrived to pickup a staff member proceeded to take a display unit off the shelf & put it in the box to give to me.

MSY may have been bought out by Umart, but they still have that classic MSY sketchyness.

    • +2

      Don’t leave us hanging.

Did you refuse the case? Was it the last one in stock? Did the dude give you a funny look?

      • +1

Was the last one in stock, the guy actually checked out the back before he realised the display unit was the last they had. I took it because I needed it that day & it was cheap (I checked it for damage/missing parts before I accepted it). I prob could have argued it down but I couldn't be bothered, was running late as it was.

    • +1

Not exactly, UMart is great at doing that too.
UMart sold me an opened item with torn manual, and some of accessories in the box already opened as "new".

  • Sketchy

3 months warranty sounds pretty dodgy

  • +1

"this item is either covered by original manufacturer’s warranty or three months standard warranty provided by MSY"

So which is it?? Luck of the draw as to what warranty you get?

  • idk man $65 can get you brand new nvme now.. sure its dramless but its still faster than the mx500

    • Depends, if it is QLC, the sustained write speed can still tank badly.

    • Yeah that would be a QLC where as this is TLC. Still the used aspect is dodge.

    • Where does it say it is used?

      • +1

My bad, I thought it said used in there, thats on me. Still, for the price it isn't worth taking the gamble when new is so cheap now.

  • +1

Yeah they're used and not just 'open box'.

It does look like there was a firmware issue recently that was getting some bad press:

  • Ok are they really used or is it just the packaging that’s open?
