What Are Your Tips for Getting The Cheapest Petrol?

Good afternoon all.

I have recently finished up a novated lease and now actually need to think about how to minimise the cost of petrol - it has been a while so keen to hear what others do.

I live in Victoria.

Is 4c (or more) off a litre from your food shop still an option?

I have found 4c off per litre at Shell in the Linkt app - does this stack with the food one?

Is the 7/11 lock worth it and what is the best way to use it?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

7 Eleven Fuel app is THE BEST! (Quality Mobile fuel)

      Id stay away from independents
Too many horror stories including mine

      But must this:
Buy when fuel is cheapest and then lock in the price for another 7 days with the 7 Eleven app

      • -1

Not every state has it. Not everyone has one in the close reach.

      • +16

        7-11 app, 3utools and this website: https://projectzerothree.info/prices.php

        • +2

          This is the way….

        • -1

          x2

        • Nice! Didn't know about this.

        • And maybe on Android, fake GPS so you don't need to drive closer to that suburb to lock in the price on 7-11 app.

          • +1

@fredk1000: How do you fake gps on android? I tried some apps from play store to change the location but 7eleven can detect that location was modified. Meanwhile, 3utools+iPad works great.

            • +1

@somebody123: Look up "how to spoof pokemon Go"
Seems to be the community with the most up to date methods of faking GPS on android

          • +1

@fredk1000: Fake GPS apps on Android fail to fool the 7 eleven app unfortunately.

            • @HeWhoKnows: If you have a rooted Android device look into Frida.

Anytime I need to fill up I enable the Frida module in Magisk, reboot my phone, run a custom Frida python script which automatically grabs the cheapest price in Australia (I don't even check the ProjectThreeZero site anymore since. I use diesel now) and press the price lock button. Never fails, and takes me about 1 minute

Only reason I disable Frida is because my camera crashes when I try to open it with Frida enabled. Not sure what's going on - something to do with the .so files

            • @HeWhoKnows: Not true if you are rooted.

        • So 3utools has a built in GPS spoofer?

          • @Jase83: Toolbox -> Virtual location, or something like that. But yeah it does.

The iPhone doesnt need to be jailbroken or anything like that, should just work as normal does on my phone.

          • @Jase83: Only works under iOS 16.
Needs a work around for iOS16 and above
            Paid location changers still work

          • +1

            @Jase83: Yes.
            Alternatively use ifakelocation.

            • @SonOfATightASS: Can I ask what these fake location tools do? How do you use them?

              • @mhz: They do what they say on the jar i.e. they trick your device into believing it is in the location of your choosing, anywhere on the globe. As an example, say you are currently in Victoria but the cheapest 7-11 u91 price in the country is in Eight Mile Plains Qld. Connecting your device to a computer and spoofing (faking) the location, by using this software, to Eight Mile Plains will allow you to lock in that stores price. Read the threads in the petrol forum for clearer instructions on how to.

        • +1

3utools location stopped working on latest iOS, for me and many others it seems. Do you know if that’s fixed now?

          • +1

@WhyAmICommenting: For some reason it doesnt seem to work on my mrs phone, but works on mine. I always keep my iphone updated I havent blocked it from doing any updates. If you can maybe just try a different phone.

          • @WhyAmICommenting: Not with current version which was updated earlier this year.
Several other useful functions have stopped working as well.
Seems the 3uTools team have lost interest or done a deal with apple.

          • +5

@WhyAmICommenting: Same with me. I've switched to IFakeLocation https://github.com/master131/iFakeLocation which works even better in my opinion.

            • @ClownCar: Yeah, I agree. Ifakelocation is the way to go at the moment.

            • @ClownCar: Can concur, iFakelocation is the better piece of kit for faking location.

        • Yagoona U98 @ 185.7

wtf haven't seen prices like this since 2019

        • Correct!
I thought I was the only one that worked this out
But you need an iPhone as well
One running on iOS under 16 is best
          Doesnt work with android phones

        • Avoid 3u tools, it's malware. iFakelocation works well.

        • Ended up getting iFakelocation working :D

          • @Jase83: does iFakelocation work with iphone or android

        • How to go about if your acct was cancelled by 7-11?

      • Our local 7 eleven is awful. Always high prices so who cares if you get the lowest of what are not good prices. Lots of better options, at least where I live.

        • +1

I'm not sure how that's stupid… Even if it locks a cheaper servo further away, you can still redeem it at the one closest to your place.

        • +1

OMG you been driving to the 15KM servo to fill up after locking? You can lock in anywhere in Australia and fill up at the nearest servo regardless of which servo it locked for.

        • The 7-Eleven app used to lock in the price at your nearest servo

          Ah, no it didn't…

          So stupid.

Yeah, but not the app in this case.

The app is doing it's entire purpose, allowing users to lock in a price nearby, and use it for you to 7 days later at any 7-11 store they visit.

Perhaps you misunderstood its purpose or the basics benefit/$ saving it can provide if used to its fullest.
I haven't bought fuel from a non 7-11 store for years.

          • -1

@SBOB: All the 7/11s near me have similar pricing and it isn't good compared to alternative options. There's about 5 non 7/11 reasonably local servos that are consistently the best priced.

  • +28

Remember that it's not worth it drive across town to "save" a few cents per litre. 😁

    • -1

At sixth litres that's 12 dollars off.

      Let's assume 10km per litre.

So 2 liters. At 2 dollars

      • +7

At sixth litres that's 12 dollars off.

        You save $2 per litre?

If you're driving far specifically to get petrol, it's not just the petrol you burn to get there. Your time is worth money too and if you don't care about your own time, then you've also got the wear and tear on the car too.

        • So 10km would take say 15 mins there so 30mjns total then.

          • +5

@Stopback: A few cents per litre does not save you $12 over sixth litres. (I'm guessing you mean 60 litres?) The difference in price over 60 litres to save $12 would need to be 20c/litre saving.

Saving 10c/litre at a 10km further away servo with a car with an average consumption of 8l/100km would save you $4.60~ish on a 60 litre fill up. (excluding time, return journey and wear and tear costs).

    • +1

If you have 7-11 nearby. On Android, use fake GPS so you don't need to drive closer to that suburb to lock in the price on 7-11 app.
Use the fuel lock at the local 7-11.

    • +1

      Costco

      • Costco is only worth it for 98. Diesel and E10 are cheaper using the utools + 711 hack compared to my local costco.

        • Costco wait times are mental though. Personally, isn't worth the $12ish dollars (on 72l of 98) for the drive to Casula and awful queue in front.

          • +1

@ThadtheChad: I only got fuel from Costco once and I didn't have to queue for long but I went a non busy time I've seen some of the wait times online and it looks terrible

            • @Joshminey: Yeah that must be it. We tend to go to Costco during the weekend (it is a long drive so it's more of a once-a-month excursion) and the queues then are incredible.

              • +1

@ThadtheChad: I went to an independent servo last night was only 0.8 cents a litre more than costco not worth going there just for the fuel

                • @Joshminey: Where I am 98 is between 15 and 25c per litre cheaper at Costco.

    Petrol Spy.

If you spend more than a minute or two on Petrol Spy, or drive more than a couple of km to make a marginal saving, it's actually not worth it.

My tip is to get a job where you get a company car with a company fuel card with unlimited personal use (some restrictions), free is better than cheap.

    • yeah mine is free within NSW

  • -7

"BuY aN Ev aNd YoUsE NeVaR HaVe Ta PaY fEr PeTroL AgAiN!1!!!1!" - every annoying EV owner, ever.

I use the NSW Gov "Fuel Watch" app. And realise that sometimes the cheapest and further out is not the cheapest once you factor in time and traveling.

And I know people that will drive more than the saving they make on driving way out of their way to buy cheaper fuel, so are losing money on "cheaper fuel"

Also, and yes, I'm going to kick this box of hornets, but only put in the fuel your car requires. You are not going to get "better economy" from putting 98RON in your 12yo shitbox Holden Astra if all it needs is 91RON.

    • +2

People probably already paid upfront into the car price for the saving and most still have to pay for charging later. Thinking of the same model of a fridge, a 3-Star Energy rating one may be a few hundred dollars cheaper than a 4-Star Energy rating one.

      Watch this.

  • +5

I have recently finished up a novated lease and now actually need to think about how to minimise the cost of petrol

LOL you had been paying for the petrol under a novated lease too….. :)

But driving off without paying seems to be the cheapest way these days.

    • +2

This is true and people don't realise it. Blew my mind talking to a friend with his "spend spend spend" mantra because it's all "on the lease".

      • Yes I'm shocked as well with people on leases that don't realise any 'cost' incurred, fuel, tyres, car washes, services etc they are still paying for out of their own pocket at the end of the day, they just get them 'tax free' as such.

I knew someone who would get 2 automatic car washes a week as they are part of the lease, so why not. I'm like errr yes part of the lease, but not free, you are paying for them pre tax along the way.

        • Leases are a con that admin companies make plenty of money out of.

          • @Brianqpr: Only if you allow yourself to be conned, if you do it right a novated lease can save a fair bit of money. I’ve leased a few cars and did my own calculations of all the expenses down to the cent at the end of all the leases, every single time I was better off than buying the car outright (cash) and spending post tax money on running costs.

You should not treat leasing a car any different to buying without a lease. i.e: You should negotiate your interest rate if you can (but may not always be possible for everyone depending on your employer / lease provider), source your own car (yes you can still get fleet discounts on brand new cars if your source your own car, or better yet get a relatively new used/demo so you don’t have to bear the full brunt of the depreciation), say no to all mingmole products pushed by the lease provider (e.g: all sorts of insurance crap like dent, wheel , income protection insurances, their own recommended car insurance etc.), arrange your own maintenance (e.g: brakes, tyres etc..) and pump when petrol is cheap.

            • @opt: I assume your calculations compare to buying a car privately and selling it after 5 years at it's depreciated price.

Do the calculations still work in favour of the lease if you sell the car after 10 years? 15 years?

              • @greatlamp: The calculations are based on owning the car outright after paying the residual at the end of the lease (i.e: impact to take home pay over the lease period + residual value) vs buying the same car outright with cash (i.e: no loan) + paying post tax money on the same running costs for the same period. I generally lease for 3 years then buy back the car because the residual at the end of the lease works out to be a lot cheaper than the market value of the car (but this may vary depending on the vehicle you buy).

Do the calculations still work in favour of the lease if you sell the car after 10 years? 15 years?

AFAIK the maximum duration you can NL a car is 5 years. Like I said above, I've only done it for 3, and was ahead every time. How long you keep the car after buying it outright at the end of the lease makes no difference.

                • @opt: Under the NL you are implicitly claiming a tax deduction through your salary.

Have you included tax deductions in the alternative where you pay for the car yourself?

                  • +1

                    @greatlamp:

Under the NL you are implicitly claiming a tax deduction through your salary.

Yes, I know, and that is where the savings come.

My calculations and comparison is pretty straight forward.

My take home monthly pay without a lease = A
My take home monthly pay with a lease = B
                    Lease period = 36 months
Residual value of the car at the end of the lease = C
Cost of the car if I bought upfront with cash = D
Actual dollar value of all the running costs over the 3 year lease period (e.g: rego, insurance, fuel, maintenance) = E
My NL provider kept a detailed expense report of every single transaction I made through the account and it shows the actual dollar expense including GST, this is what I used to find the value of E for the non leased scenario, I only considered the relevant expenses excluding admin fees.

The total cost to own the car after 3 years though a lease is:((A-B) x 36) + C
The total cost of the car after 3 years without a lease is : D + E

                    In my previous leases ((A-B) x 36) + C < D + E.

    • LOL yes, but it was discounted through a fuel card - so I would look for cheapest keep an eye on cheapest day etc. Just trying to be a bit frugal :)

7-11 price lock has saved me hundreds this year alone. Get a cheap older phone you can root/install magisk/use a chopper on & have that as your dedicated fuel lock phone. Usually easier to root the phone for GPS spoofing. I used a pokemon go location faking guide to get false GPS locations working, they are updated more frequently.

Currently using an old galaxy s7 running pixel experience rom for all my GPS spoofing needs. Occasionally they will ban your account, just uninstall the app, get a device ID changer app & run it, reinstall & open new account. If you login to multiple acocunts with the same app install they will ban all of them once 1 is flagged.

    • You can also sell them on FB

    • get a device ID changer app

Good 1 . I need that and another number to get back to a blocked site that has important info .

    • Any thoughts on the iOS version? My iPhone got banned because I follow some guides before and can't create any accounts.

      • I don't bother with iOS, I always found android easier/more flexible.

    • Hi Mitt. Can you recommend which ID changer app for iphone? Ta.

      • Sorry I dont have any experience doing all this on Iphone. I find android more flexible when it comes to customisation/tinkering.

The Shell V-Power Racing App - gives you 5c a litre discount for a week leading up to every Supercars Race. (Can be redeemed from the Monday before race weekend and code is valid for 2 weeks). Saving stacks with other Shell/Coles discounts.

App only needs a name, email and postcode

    • Thanks, added to the wiki.

  • I stock up when it's at the low point of the cycle. I drive past many petrol stations on the way to work and know that if a certain one suddenly jumps up in price, the cycle is over and I have about 3 days to take my jerry cans to the woolies servo and fill them and the car up. Combine with 4c off per litre and spend $5 in store (milk and bread) for another 4c off.

I then fill up from my jerry cans until the low point comes around again. I do a lot of kms, so this is worthwhile for me.

About the same as my previous petrol cars…crap. Because I don't beach or bush drive. Although plenty of EVs that are more than capable. Got any other mindless anti-EV comments?

        • -5

          Plenty.

Lot's of Australians drive off road or on the beach. Well, those that don't live in the sh1tehole cities of Sydney and Melbourne do anyway.

I don't know of any practical EV that can do that and costs under $70k. Interested to know about these 'capable' EVs? Some links would be great.

      • Its pretty good. Now to be honest, never did much bush driving but can get down to Jervis Bay from Canberra which is nice.

        • Cool. What do you drive?

          • @R4: BYD Atto3

            • @nedski: Cool.

You drive that on the beach?
