  • anyone else thinks this is a good price to pull the trigger?

    • +2

It is the average highly upvoted price, not ATL but seems popular at this price.

    • +5

Doesn’t seem that good given a month or 2 ago 55” a80j and s95b was around the $1300 mark.

      • +1

Agreed. For ~1240 that a80j is one of the best purchases i've made

        • Any chances it will drop that low again given stock is very limited already?

      • Only worth comparing to other LG prices though

        • I think these models are close enough in quality… like is the LG worth $400 more than Sony / Samsung OLED?

          • @On1: To some yes, to others no.

    • +2

It’s a clearance model so probably not too many more opportunities for this price until the c3 comes down in price. Though there is also the upcoming LG Member day but who knows what is in that.

  • I'm looking for something like this for a big monitor. 55 is a bit much though hey? I assume 42 or 48 would be better.

    • +3

      Even 48 is too big.

42 takes time to adjust to, but it’s the sweet spot if you can sit far back enough.

      • +1

other downsides as using it as a monitor as i was looking at to is txt doesnt look as great, possible for burn in and color accuracy

        • Apparently there's settings you can use to fix the text, not sure how well it works though. I thought the colour accuracy was good on OLEDs?

Other issues are it's a TV not a monitor so get issues with waking it or something.

          • @bleeder: Didnt know about a possible txt fix. Yea they are calibrated for novies ect . Was off when i tried photoshop ect. I did find 55 inch tio big though to edit when i tried on my b9

        • Text is not as good in OLEDs in general. Even OLED monitors are not as good for text as IPS/VA. If you're working on it 8-10 hours a day for productivity work it's something to consider. If you only play games and watch movies on it, can't be the OLEDs.

    • Depends on how far you're sitting from the TV.
      55" is probably a bit much unless you're e.g. 1.5m away.
42" C2 is often used as a monitor - I was looking into this during one of the previous deals. A deep desk (e.g. 80cm) though is still probably ideal and the subpixel layout isn't as good for text.

    • +2

Using a 42" C2 from an earlier $995 deal and it works pretty well on a 80cm deep desk. I tried putting a 55" TV on my desk before buying the 55" Sony OLED posted beforehand but it felt pretty exhausting to use as you have to turn your head to see the edges of the display.

      • +2

how is the text sharpness for daily text reading / web browsing?

I read that the subpixel layout is not good for text

Do you also experience ABL / auto dimming while using the monitor?

Are you able to game at 4k on your PC, what is your spec?

For 4k pc gaming, I think you need a powerful GPU and PC…

        • +1

Text sharpness is fine at my 90cm viewing distance. At 40cm I can clearly tell its a RGBW panel (there's a bit of fuzziness around characters) not the RGB panels you'd get with IPS monitors but I don't really sit that close to a 42" monitor.

No weird auto dimming behaviour but the C2 is known to sometimes flicker with VRR on when the framerate drastically changes. The times where I have experienced that have mostly been where I need to alt tab or close a game with task manager, not really during gameplay itself.

With a 5600X & a 3080 10GB I can get a steady 100-120fps using an optimised mix of med/high settings, dlss quality in Hogwarts Legacy. It recommends ultra but playing it at that setting can lead to frame drops down to 60fps.

how is the text sharpness for daily text reading / web browsing?
I read that the subpixel layout is not good for text

I have the LG C2 42" and the text sharpness is perfect on macOS, but on Windows 11 in certain apps like Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers, some of the text looks quite fuzzy (looks a bit like the chromatic aberration effect you see in some video games) when I turn on the "PC" mode for the HDMI 2.1 port. If I don't use the "PC" mode then the text looks perfectly normal. I have no idea why this is happening and Googling doesn't seem to offer any good solutions, but I consider it acceptable as I mostly use my C2 for gaming. Text otherwise looks normal in other applications, but since I use Chrome browser so often, the effect is more noticeable.

If I was using the C2 for productivity, I would simply turn off the "PC" mode and use a different mode instead. Supposedly the PC mode reduces display latency, so it's not an issue if you're not gaming. I already tried all the usual tricks like using the ClearType tuner and disabling Sharpness down to zero, but it didn't make a difference — apparently this is because certain applications like Chrome use their own font rendering engine.

[edit] I tried Firefox and that doesn't have the issue, text looks really sharp in that browser.
I also tried the other modes like "Game Console" and the default HDMI mode, and those don't have the fuzziness/chromatic aberration issue.

So I don't know what is going on, but I guess the 4:4:4 chroma in the "PC" mode must be making the non-standard subpixel layout more apparent than in other modes. All in all, I think it's a minor annoyance and not a big deal, especially as you can work around it if it does bother you.

Do you also experience ABL / auto dimming while using the monitor?

Yes I do, it happens quite regularly while browsing the web, especially if you open a website that uses an all-white background. It's annoying but I don't think it's a deal-breaker.

Apparently you can work around this to a certain extent by buying an LG service remote and disabling some of the auto-dimming features, but you can't turn it off completely. Something to be aware of if you're planning on using the C2 for productivity use.

          • @deadpoet: Do you watch much 4k videos - movies, TV or youtube or whatever on the 42" 4K TV?

I think most people got alot of 1080p or 720p videos and only some 4k videos..

Do change how you use the web browser and other software since the monitor is big?
e.g. screen divided into 2 rows 3 column section
and the browser is now in the bottom row middle column since there is no point that browser takes up more screen space since it would just be empty white space etc.

example = B is the web browser
            [ ] [ ] [ ]
            [ ] [B] [ ]

Yes I do, it happens quite regularly while browsing the web, especially if you open a website that uses an all-white background. It's annoying but I don't think it's a deal-breaker.

when ABL / auto dimming occurs,
does the brightness go back to normal level after moving the mouse, scrolling the webpage or typing some text in the browser?

            OR
it the lowered brightness remains like that as long as you are still on that white background webpage.

So it would occur on a site like ozbargain?
            that would be a pain.

Apparently you can work around this to a certain extent by buying an LG service remote and disabling some of the auto-dimming features, but you can't turn it off completely. Something to be aware of if you're planning on using the C2 for productivity use.

            won't this void your warranty?

        • I've got the 27inch OLED from LG, I assume their TVs would have the same issues.

how is the text sharpness for daily text reading / web browsing?

Text does look "weird" sometimes, like on this site right now. I'm not bothered by it personally but it does look like a very faint rgb line to the left of each letter.

Do you also experience ABL / auto dimming while using the monitor?

Yep, when a page is very white, the screen dims. And eg. if I scroll to the bottom of ozbargain where the grey footer is, the brightness suddenly increases as less white on the screen.

Other questions aren't relevant as this is a 1440p screen, not 4k.

Not going to be many left now, its a runout model. If you want it grab it otherwise wait ages for C3 to drop in price, dont hold your breath haha

    • -1

      why wait ages?

If they make a new model each year (e.g. C4) then price needs to be drop for older model to clear out the stock each year

      • +3

Personally if I'm looking to buy a new monitor / tv I think waiting a year is ages.

      • +2

I’d think ages in this context is 6-9 months

    • This. The last good deals tend to be in May-June of each year, and after that will be a long drought until the Black Friday/Christmas sales, but those usually won't be as cheap as during the EOFY sales.

  • +5

    Waiting for a 42" C2 deal

    • I feel like they know 42 is in demand so won't give us any more specials for it. Or they sold out everywhere during the last deal…

  • Shipping is very slow, arriving at the end of this month. I asked JB Hifi to price match, they offered $1850 + delivery, arriving this week. (They said they won't price match Ebay, but still made an offer)

This deal is obviously cheaper, but if you're impatient, that's also an option.

    • what was there offer?

maybe wait till the c3 starts selling.

      • I checked the C3 specs sheet and the 42inch doesn't seems to have Dolby Vision.

  • +1

Anyone know the real world burn in warranty on these and the older C1s?

Saw someone successfully got a burn in replaced after 5yrs after a legal challenge.

Noticed all tv channels like to leave their logos, or 'live' permanently on the bottom corners these days.

    • +2

I had my C8 screen replaced after 3yrs use (12 month warranty). I was denied service on this same device when the panel failed after 5.5yrs. I could have pursued…. didn't have the energy.

      • so you got c8 replaced (after 3 years) with c2 and the panel has failed after 5.5 years?

Also can you tell what is the panel failure cause / issue?

        • +1

Just the screen I imagine - the c2 hasn't been out for 5 years

        • +5

I don't know what specific panel went in as a replacement, but it never had further burn in problems (the original was TERRIBLE for it).

I don't know the cause, but one day the TV just refused to turn on. Took it in for repair - was advised the internals were fine, it would only refuse to power up when the panel was connected. Went back and forth with LG and was hard denied multiple times. I was then a sucker and caved to the runout G2 deals and grabbed the 65" I always regretted not originally buying.

          • +1

@Hinee: so essentially got 8.5 years total usage out of the TV?

it is quite crap that the second replacement only got 5.5 years.
wonder there ACL protection for the second replacement since it only lasted 5.5 years?

not how the ACL works in this situation.

      • +3

That's lame, I had a 2017 65" C7 panel with vertical banding issues replaced in December 2022 by LG with a new (possibly CX) panel for free.

  • has anyone managed to price match this at JB?

  • Any good news about 42'?

  • Delivery is $123 for me. No thanks.

  • Damn I think I waited for too long, no C2 55" stock anywhere I can find…
