Ashwaghanda has an extremely relaxing effect on me. I use it during times of high stress, it feels extremely potent.

Same with me, has cut down my anxiety by a lot.

          Would you say Ashwaganda forever?

    • +3

Could well be for some or most but personal experience is that it has been a godsend for me. Helps my anxiety and stress. I have been using various brands for a couple of years though.

    • +3

It is great for those who suffer from anxiety.
Id say the only real issue is the drowsiness and emorional detatchment it can cause in some. Though emotional detatchment isnt always bad.

You clearly have very little awareness of the research supporting this particular supplement and have grouped it in with non-effective supplements.
      Have a bit of a read: https://examine.com/supplements/ashwagandha/

    • Helps me with sleep. Been using this exact product for a while now, just ordered this deal, probably my 5th bottle.

I agree that most supplements aren't worth shit, but Ashwaghanda has a lot more evidence than most to back up it's anxiolytic and cortisol reduction effects.

I've used it on and off personally for years, and it definitely made a difference for me. If you're a happy, healthy adult, it might not be worth it (there's other reputed effects, but with less evidence to back them up). I also found ahem male specific benefits which were very noticeable while taking it. I stick to root only extracts though, which I'm not sure this one is. KSM-66 is a reputable branded full spectrum extract used by lots of supplement manufacturers.

It's generally recommended to only take it for 12 week cycles at most. Side effects seem to effect just some people, those taking large doses (up to 1000mg is what's normally recommended) or those taking it long term without breaks, and include anhedonia, digestive issues and irritability. Anecdotally some people report it can accelerate hair loss and gynecomastia (possibly due to it's hormonal effects exacerbating existing issues).

And of course, don't ingest substances based on what people say on the Internet (my comment isn't to promote Ashwaghanda as much as it's to point out that not all supplements are worthless, but most are IMHO).

Saying that, I know nothing of this brand, and brand matters for supplements. Even if the supplement itself has little evidence, you want to be certain of what you're ingesting (and more importantly be sure of what you're not ingesting, such as heavy metals or other unwanted substances).

I usually just use alcohol to deal with stress but let's see how I go with this

    • Imagine taking this with a swig of vodka

      • I'd call this the breakfast of champions.
Two drugs are better than one……

This kind of product epitomises the problems with the unregulated supplements industry. They can guarantee 13,500mg of plant matter in each capsule, there is no control for the quality of the plant extract. The amount of active compound will differ if they change sources, or even between seasons. Think about how much wine changes year to year grown from the same vines, and then multiply that.

Recommend spending a little more on a standardised extract such as Ashwagandha KSM-66

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Jarrow-Formulas-Ashwagandha-Suppor…

    Or even better

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Life-Extension-Optimized-Ashwagand…

It is a much better choice than St. Johns Wort, which has more side effects and significant drug interactions. Nevertheless don't mix Ashwagandha with other medications without checking drug interactions

    • How the 2 that you recommended compare to Blackmore:

      https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/91132/blackmores-ash…

I currently take both blackmore Ashwagandha and St Johns wort together, and find it help me manage my stress and mood alot

      • +1

My first response would be that I can't give you medical advice over the web

Secondly, if it's working for you and you have no side effects, I wouldn't recommend you change anything, it would be very difficult to tell you what the equivalent dosage of Ashwagandha is in another product. There is also risk of withdrawal and rebound anxiety if you change what you are taking, especially without tapering down. Hence the suggestion for medical supervision.

These drugs are over the counter and not prescription because they are very old, they aren't harmless or safer than prescription medicines, the same caution should be applied.

Nevertheless I see mention of standardised extract on the blackmores product so it tells me that they do standardise it but don't want to pay for using someone else's patent

For further reference, this is a standardised St. Johns wort product
        https://www.flordis.com.au/products/remotiv/

St John's Wort is essentially an antidepressant from a natural source, you should also consider prescription antidepressants will be much cheaper.

    • +1 for this comment, if you're going to take these supplements, pay the extra money and get a popular and proven brand such as some of the ones on iHerb.

      • -1

iHerb doesn't mean trusted. Some of the NMN brands sold there were found to have 0% NMN in them.

        • When did I ever say iHerb means trusted? Good point though, some dodgy things on there.

        • +1

          Nootropics Depot for NMN.

    • Is that Life-Extension brand generally of a high quality?

      • Yes, probably the best brand on iherb that isn't ridiculously priced

  • -3

    Snakeoil in capsule form?

  • What is the warning about ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha may cause several side effects in people with autoimmune disorders and allergies. It may induce abortions, cause liver damage, lower blood sugar levels too much, and aggravate hypothyroidism. In addition, people with prostate cancer, autoimmune conditions, and liver problems should avoid using this remedy.

Can't S&S anymore for some reason!
