For those who are unvaccinated and want to travel, yes.

        • What % of Australians are unvacced

@easternculture: You don't think that covid was responsible for the deaths 28 passengers on the Ruby Princess?

You disrespect their families loss and many other deaths with your continued nonsense.

High rates of vaccination, immunity bought on by having corona virus, and the variants seemingly being less serious now; are the reasons we now go about out business mostly normally.

It is shameful that ppl like you haven't made a meaningful contribution to the safety of our society especially to the elderly and those with exisiting health conditions.

You are welcome by the way.

                      • -1

@Eeples: I cant confirm nor deny without enough information.
Mortality is affected by multiple factors.
Due to privacy, they didnt disclose if they had any medical conditions, if they were already immunocompromised, age, etc.
Without this information we cannot be sure that covid was the cause of the death.
This is why they have something in hospital called "Death reviews" and monthly Mortality/Morbidity (M&M) meetings.

This is why the government changed the terminology from "died from covid" to "died with covid"

Whats shameful is that you continue to defend covid when there was many many people who died alone in hospital and families who were not allowed to say their final goodbye's due to the visiting restrictions that made no sense and were unnecessary. This is why i left the public health system and refuse to ever work their.

And if you want to keep believing the lies of the government, go ahead. But the hospital i worked in (which is a major hospital) did not have any deaths directly linked to covid.

AstraZeneca has recorded soaring revenues of $37.4bn as it begins to profit from its Covid-19 vaccine for the first time. In its full-year and Q4 results, the company said revenues for 2021 had risen by 38% from the previous year at constant exchange rates.

                        @easternculture: You’re misrepresenting the facts.
It completely undermines absolutely everything you say when you spread lies.

AstraZeneca delivered the vaccine at cost for the duration of the pandemic. It was only as the endemic stage was entered they started selling it for profit. Even at that they continue to provide poor countries the vaccine at cost.

                        • @Meho2026: Yeh ok.
                          Its all over google.
They said at cost price, do you or anyone know what cost price is.
Its classified data. They will never tell you.
They sell it as a contract to x country and they would have all competed to get get a contract from AZ.
So no, its not misrepresenting, its buisness as usual for them.

Locking your house / car doesn't stop someone breaking in, but it does make it harder.

Storing and handling food correctly doesn't eliminate the risk of food poisoning, but it does reduce the risk.

              • +3

@mathew42: What does any of that have to do with the statement the CV19 vaccines don't stop the spread. You can argue it decreases the symptoms of the taker, but it doesn't stop the spread.

                • +5

@krazek: As you've acknowledged the vaccine does reduce the symptoms. As the virus is predominately spread via aerosol if your body is producing less of the virus and/or you are not coughing everywhere the it does reduce the spread.

Stop being a selfish prick and take the jab for the sake of those around you.

                  • +4

@mathew42: I can guarantee you anyone who has lasted this long without taking them will definitely not get their 1st shot now given all the information we now know

                    • +8

@krazek: The information we have now confirms that the vaccines are incredibly safe. This is not to deny that some people may suffer more significant adverse effects, but there are risks in every decision we take. You are more likely to die on the road this year than from a vaccine.

Are you familiar with herd immunity? This is why not taking the vaccine makes you a selfish prick because you increase your risk of infection, exposing others who may be more vulnerable and putting them at risk. Think of the cancer sufferer who's immune system in compromised.

Yes, I accept that this won't change your mind, but the truth still needs to be stated.

                      • +5

@mathew42: Natural immunity from the virus itself destroys your argument..

@krazek: Except that the virus is mutating so your immunity against last year's strain might not be effective this year.

your immunity against last year's strain might not be effective this year.

Like the flu vaccine, it only covers last years strains yet they encourage you to take it even when modern science tells us that the viruses mutate

          • @nicktheguy: But they already admitted that the "vaccine" doesn't prevent you from getting infected or spreading the virus. You still do it?

        • +5

Curious for those who are proud of not following "the science", what the you follow to come to the conclusions that vaccines are bad? Sky news?

            • +4

@Munki: Just replying to all who still aren't convinced to have a vaccine (not replying to munki at all, just to the naysayers…)

              Apply your logic to seatbelts!

Even though normal flu is greatly reduced by our new distance keeping habits and staying home when sick etc. Covid deaths are still 8x the mortality rate of what flu was before the epidemic. But why worry, most deaths are of people aged 65+. Go have another cigarette.

              • +2

@Waltervp: There are no more distance keeping habits anymore, or stay at home.

What i have observed is people are back to pre covid habits and i rarely see anyone wearing a mask.

Even retailers have stop supplying hand sanitiser at enterance of shops etc.

My previous workplace (which is a healthcare settings) allows covid positive staff to work onsite if they are assymptomatic.

Not sure what your on about.

          • @dodoli: Vaccines aren't necessarily bad. They're great if necessary.

Is it 'following the science' or being spoon fed big pharma and government motives? Are you a scientist, albeit one who is qualified to 'follow said science'?

I got the vac so I could travel. I didn't want to or probably need to. I don't 'follow the science' not trust the motives of those at the steering wheel of this particular episode.

            • @dmbminaret: I used to work in science, but not vaccine related, so I know there is at least some kind of credibility if you follow the scientific method.

I'm not condemning anyone for not taking the vaccine, but I still believe we should at least encourage more people taking the vaccine during the height of the pandemic. And I'm questioning those who are so proud of "not taking the jab" and calling everyone that took the vaccine and covid precautions "sheeps without common sense", from where did they get their wisdom? Is it the telling of their ancestors or religious leaders or sky/fox new?

              • @dodoli: Its because there was no science involved. Just government policies.

Even pharma's are now admitting that they knew the vaccine does not prevent transmission, and yet majority of people believed information given by polititians when they said take it because it will stop the spread.

Clearly it was lies because a comittee i was involved in at work (healthcare staff) confirmed the vaccine did not prevent transmission and backed it up by scientific papers that had been published at that time. And this was a month or so after the vaccine rollout started

There was nothing scientific in the vaccine rollout.

J&J and AZ have stopped producing vaccines for covid. There is no more profit now which makes sense.
Im guessing pfizer will also stop soon as profits decrease with covid vaccine

                • @easternculture: Is there any source to any of this? Also note that vaccines don't have to prevent transmission, they just need to lower the damage the virus causes the public.

Hard to believe that ALL governments on earth colluded on this together. If something has leaked why is China not blasting this everyday on their media? That all the western governments are lying to their people and their vaccines don't work?

        • If it helps anyone, they have now updated the vaccines for newer strains. But still no silver bullet.

Also, a friends Dad died last month with covid. Just Jo average. Not obese and immuno comprimised etc.
Was at a party Tuesday, dead by Friday. What was interesting was that the ventilators are prioritised. Unfortunately there were people with a higher priority than him and he was simply discharged from hospital. He died in the night in his own bed.

Investigation cleared the hospital. Is what it is. Just wasnt enough ventilators. But a tough pill to swallow for the family.

Im now more in the camp of promoting isolation practices when you are sick, over vax vs non vaxed. We have dropped the ball here.

Reality is you may be partying at the start of the week, dead by the end purely due to bad timing of a hospital admission.

          • @tunzafun001: Sorry for your freinds loss

There might be a possibility that he got legionella pneumonia (incubation period 2 to 8 days) from the airconditioning unit (where legionella usually incubates) but was unlucky and also had covid at the same time.

Also you cant be sure he got covid from the party as incubation period is between 7 to 14 days.

So without all the details, we cant really be sure its covid.

            • @easternculture: Dont know where he contracted covid, just know he was happy and healthy at a party just 3 days prior. But very likely positive at that point.

Cause of death was from fluid on the lung (which as you say would be a secondary infection), followed by extra stress on the heart. There was a bit of investigation before pencilling him as a Covid death statistic.

The scary part is he was simply discharged. He could of died driving home and killed many.

So my take home really is dont assume you will get a ventillator. You might be 35 and all the other patients are younger than you, then you dont get one and your time is up…simple as that.

So the older you are, the more you roll the dice.

              • @tunzafun001:

Cause of death was from fluid on the lung (which as you say would be a secondary infection), followed by extra stress on the heart.

So basically he had pulmonary oedema with right side heart failure which is consistent with ARDS/ pnemonia. Possibly Cor pulmonale but hard to assume without looking at tests

                • @easternculture: Sounds about right. Im guessing a fair whack of Covid related mortalities would basically be this type of thing. Just sucks, way too young. At the same time, there are way too many people and nature is just doing its thing.

      • +6

Yes, because as a risk minimisation strategy I'd prefer that everyone onboard was vaccinated.

When vaccines first became available, people queued, because they knew people who had died of smallpox, diphtheria, polio or were crippled for life.

        • Logics lol

    • It will all come out in the coming years but only on SBS. Media used to pride themselves on bringing all sides to a story, was covid the first time this didn't happen?

@Bii: Fly to Cairns, you might find that Auckland is a great place to visit.

    • Food is included. Fancy food costs extra.

I’ve been on P&O and Royal Caribbean (both before covid though, some people reckon quality has declined since) and found the free food to be a lot better than I was expecting. Only forked out for a fancy restaurant once on a special occasion.

    • +4

Stuck in a tin can breathing other people's coughs (and touching the same surfaces) for 12 hours on a plane vs 12 days on a cruise ship… that's the logic. By the time you are off the plane and experiencing symptoms, you don't need to be looked after by the airline, you are someone else's problem. The medical staff on a cruise ship is limited and can only deal with x number of patients per round trip, not the plethora of folks who can become crook from something readily spread.

      • +5

Here’s a story from the states, some unvaxxed person got Covid on a cruise liner and his condition deteriorated that badly that be needed to be medically evacuated, costed $287k USD and he didn’t have insurance. It seemed like the company sent a swarm of debt collectors and he’s bankrupt. Good, should have got the vaccine.

      • My sister, nephew and cousin all cruised in April. Cousin tested positive to Covid on the last day and ended up quite sick. The other two got pretty sick as well but RAT tests were negative. Lucky they were all at home when quite ill.
