Laminate Flooring + Carpeting Sydney

Guys we are helping an elderly couple with their house. I’ll be needing the same sort of job for our place in few weeks/month. They live in Sydney South West.

We want the internal living area measured to be 150sqm for laminating floor and bedrooms to be 50sqm where carpet will be installed.

From Bunnings website this Color was picked(below).

1) What would be the labour cost to install the laminating floor on top of tiles? What’s the average as I got no clue?
2) For carpet we are thinking of going to choice carpet. What’s the labour cost of this installation?

  • That's very expensive for 8mm laminate. Also 8mm is quite thin. If you have uneven floors, the joints in the laminate will give over time and it will split. You should be able to find 10-12mm premium laminate cheaper from local floor suppliers. Try FloorVenue Belfield or Ideal Floors in Kingsgrove. I got Quickstep water resistant 10mm for $60 - two years ago. Installation was around $30 per sqm.
    Quick search for example

Carpet price and installation is comparable to laminate.

  • Thank you so much. Do they come to your property for a measurement and then quote?
This is in Holsworthy suburb in Sydney South.
Bunnings is notorious for their pricing.

    1) If I go to the store or call them are they going to also provide the labor?

    2) Just investigated there are so many choices. Laminated, vinyl or Hybrid. Which one is economical and good to look at and last 5 years at least?

I’ll call and go visit the stores on Thursday. Are there any other stores you guys can recommend?

I got hybrid floors in my unit. It's only been a year but I'm happy with it.

You also need to consider temperatures. It can get a bit cold.

+1. I miss having carpet in the winter lol

Get a measuring tape and order the required sqm plus 7% for the wastage which is normal. You need underlay at $3 per sqm. Hybryd doesn’t need underlay, but it’s thiner which is not good for uneven floors. The installers will charge for what they install, reading the sqm on the packages, not measuring your place. Skirting/scotia is extra purchase plus about $5 per lineal metre install.
If you can afford it, get real timber such as blackbut or spotgum. Its hard wearing and warmer than laminate. Prob $100-120 sqm.

  • For south west sydney, I recommend Carpet House in Wetherill Park. I dealt with Dom who is very helpful

Go for Hybrid as it comes with inbuild insulation and is 100% waterproof, this will save you more insulation when you install laminates.
Remember its not the flooring, more cost will move in. Is your floor level if not then more cost to level the flooring, scotia which goes to the edge will cost additional, steps each step cost anything from $ 75 to $ 150 plus installation.

I just did that 2 months back and my wife had detailed research on this and finally we went with

    https://hipages.com.au/connect/goldlandflooringptyltd

this guy came to our house and gave one lumpsum quote and completed the job within 3 days and also assist us to relocate furniture from the floor. His quote was 35% cheapest then best price and more then half then what HN quoted.

  • No real skills needed for laminate floor, unlike tiles.
So the cost is whatever your local handyman charges.

Whatever happened to Ikea Tundra flooring? Was cheap ($15/sq.m.?) and good quality from Germany.
But if I were doing it again, I'd probably go with vinyl planks.

  • Get 3 quotes then you will have an idea what you should be paying.

  • Thank you guys some great recommendations. Leant about underlay, scotia/skirting costs on top of the laminate.
We need something waterproof who knows what gets spilled or the floor gets flooded.

I found “Easy Timber Flooring” in Bankstown with raving reviews. Did anyone use them?

Hybrid seems the way to go if I can afford it. At this stage we are after the colour of the floating floor and not spending too much money as we need to buy furnitures and do essential repairs.

    • Every flooring company has similar shades for flooring if it's wooden grain, of course, their colour name will be different.

Will recommend you to go with Hybrid as they are 100% waterproof and with insulation with the plank that will keep the cost low. Recommend you go for a broader plank.

There are very few hybrid suppliers from Europe ( all are laminates) so it is Chinese made even though sold with European and Australian company name.

Go with anyone who provides you with customer service like visiting your place to give you a complete quote including all extras + helping to move furniture, I had a few who recommend I engage relocate before they move in.

I did visit the EasyTimberflooring guy's shop but did not found enthusiastic to sell his flooring because he did not even get up from his chair to show us the floorboard and continue to shout from his chair, did not feel good if the person who does not want to sell cant expect good installation if I have any issues.

finally, time to complete the project because I know a few who will take a week's time by having only one person at the site or a few complete in 2-3 days by having 2 to 3 people at the site.

      • Thank you so much mate. We went there and he handed us European laminate 8mm $40/sqm.
He said hybrids are Chinese made and very bad. It’s thin and doesn’t look good. For 113 sqm with skirting board, underlay, removing the side wall tiles will cost us $13k cash.
The skirting board will come whitish colour and I have to sealer to hide the nails, gaps between the wall and skirting board and paint.

We will visit Goldland flooring as you suggested. I’ll seek for hybrid and check out laminate with water resistance flooring.

We don’t plan to stay in this house forever .. probably 5 years max.

yep good luck, remember it's all marketing emotions, best advice is to take a lighter colour because when you see planks in the sun the dark planks will shine out but at home its not direct sunlight at that time the lighter colour will be better.

again ask them to come to your home and give you one lump sum quote with all-inclusive including sealant and gap filled instead of each cost by linear meter as plus plus.

          • @Darayus: We went to Goldland flooring today. Basically their laminate timber was $45/sqm including labour and hybrid $55/sqm. My wife didn’t like any of the hybrid colours :(
They don’t sell skirting so told me he can come along with me to Bunnings and he will help me pick up. $5/meter for labour and whatever is the length.
Skirting board painting and sealant gaps are on me as they won’t be doing that.
I’m surprised why no one wants to apply sealant? He’s much cheaper than Easy timber flooring but they looks of Easy Timber was much better.
I’ll be going to FloorVenue Belfield
and Ideal Floors in Kingsgrove over the weekend.

If I can get one store to do carpets and flooring that’ll save a lot of headaches.

            • @justanick: I did my floors with Ideal flooring. Their service was amazing. They worked on public holiday long weekend for no extra charge just so we could move in before our deadline. They supplied bullnose skirting installed for the price of bunnings supply only. I left the skirting as is, white undercoat, no paint over coz no time to paint. You can’t tell the difference, not even rushed to paint them.

              • @loropy9: Great mate. Do you know how much they charged for labour and laminate just for my idea? You can DM me with the info that would give me a good estimate.

Btw, with the skirting which ones are better visually bull nose or pattern steps?

                • @justanick: The labour was $25 for 10mm QuickStep click system and 5$ for the skirting. Bullnose seemed less prone to collect dirt because no grooves, so we went with it. They have clean visual appearance, but it depends on your taste I guess. No idea what pattern steps are sorry. The laminate was about $60-65. I negotiated a bit, can't remember what was the final price, but it was a few $$ cheaper than others. The quality of install is immaculate. I posted some photos on their Google review page. You can see the how bullnose look. If you look hard enough, you can even see the nail holes I still haven't filled.
