    Their hot chicken taste though…

    • +7

      Got nothing on Woolies.

      • +4

        IGA has the best chicken

but has anyone tried that "Memphis" chicken at Woolworths?

      • +1

they are equally bad, idk why it's always a bit mushy inside. flavour wise it's also very bland.

I only ever eat it if i really can't think of anything to eat…

that said, i think they are better if you tear them up and make say, a salad or sandwich.

        • +1

They cook them to an internal temperature of 75-78°C at the thickest part of the breast in a steam oven, so they’re absolutely destroyed but “safe for consumption”

          • +2

@linkindan: i think it may be brined as well, that texture is highly unnatural.

            • +1

@dukeGR4: Not brined, in fact they occasionally use chickens from the meat department that are on their final day and marked down (depending on the store)

It’s the cooking temperature (I believe it’s 175°C) and full steam for the duration of cooking time that causes it - notice how the bones are brittle and almost gelatinous?
Food safety is a serious thing, but supermarket chicken cooking guides are overkill.

      • Mate, I was a dogsbody at Safeway. Proud Rotissary loader, operator and technishun. Served several tours. Suffered minor turret burns and singed shirts- and a spit through the toe (of my docs).
Yeah, the old Woollies-Safeway chookens could be great because we don't really clean the rotissaries- oven cleaner's expensive and no good for the stainless steel- and it's got to be thoroughly rinsed= liabilities= can't be R-sed getting into trouble + water= $$. And that open cogs and chain situation is asking for fingers to be maimed. For the nightly ahem "clean" certainly NOT a once-over with store-brand windex and butcher's paper because they're too fricken cheap for paper towels- or Kimberley Clarke's finest substitute- we filled the fat tray with water to steam up the oven to loosen the roast-in chicken grease.
Maybe that may have the side effect of not dehumidifying the 12-hour cooked meat (we also don't turn it up to roast temperature until half an hour before the afternoon school mum rush= saved electricity= $$). And they don't really cook them that long we were told to try to convince the customers to buy the 25%-off cold chicken from last night or make excuses about chicken's not ready- "We have to stick to the Health and Safety Guidelines, sorry". Most people will go for the cold yesterday's chicken.
Coles roast pork and beef aren't too shabby- but they need to put them in foil. I wouldn't be surprised if they cook their chicken overnight to save on offpeak and reheat them the following morning (timer). Oh yeah we had to jab the chicken with a temperature probe and pretend we read it.

I was about to say just that. The other day I just took a regular raw chicken, chucked it in oven without any spicies, glazing or marinade - oh my god night and day difference - so much tastier. And I suck at cooking normally.
How hard is for them just to do that?

      • +11

perhaps some people dislike spices… so they have to keep it Vanilla.

i mean look at KFC, they advertise the chicken pieces as "Hot N Spicy". it's not even hot OR spicy.

        • +2

It is not even the problem with spices as such… It has something to do with how they bake it. Either because of the filling or maybe because they boil and bake it is just too moist and plain. Plus, they use this particular spice, unsure what it is but it is not for everyone.

        • Also spices= $$. Can't waste them on the plebs.

Really? The woolies ones are inedible in WA, they are goopy and mushy it's disgusting, always end up sick after them

      • +5

You should really be reporting this to your local Public Health Unit.

        • -5

Too much effort, I just refuse to buy them, every 6 months or so I'll forget or be in a rush, then buy the woolies chicken and same problem

          • +4

@freoleo: i find it highly unlikely that it's caused by Woolies. ColesWorth are very notorious for their quality control and is a pain in the arse to deal with if you're supplying your produce ie. chooks to them as they have a very high standard. Likewise when roasting in store i would imagine their hygiene practices would be a lot higher than regular roast chicken joint.

Maybe that's why they taste so bland, lacking seasonings from sweat and stuff.

            • @dukeGR4: May be the types of chooks they buy then because I can't stand the goopiness of their chooks!

              • @freoleo: Those are some of the finest protein adhesive poultry replicas, I'll have you know.

            • @dukeGR4: How delightfully naive.

  • +16

Why would I want to share

    • +2

That is the true OZB Spirit 😂

    • Bulk meal prep :D

  • +6

I prefer the Coles stuffing but the Woolies seasoning. We need to cross-breed these chickens!

    • +2

are you suggesting Coles and Woolworths merge? ACCC is knocking on your door.

      • +7

You'll have to wake them up first.

  • +8

So they just copied the same deal that has been at woolworths for ages?- https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/745041

    • +2

Salads are much smaller with the Coles deal too

      • +2

You don't make friends with salad..

    • Woolworths deal is $35 now

  • +6

    I'm in a frenzy!

  • +1

how to order? what is the link?

    • Was looking for the link too ….

  • +3

Prefer Woolies roast chickens. Wish either store would adapt/imitate Red Rooster's classic yummy taste.

  • Free range chickens taste so much better at Woolies than non free range ones. Also if you have ever done your own backyard chook, the smell and taste is godlike…. So sad for all those that haven’t tried, just make sure your chook ain’t old or it be tough as nuts ;)

    • +1

      Done own backyard chook?
You mean godfather styles? Raise a chook and done them the dirty when they weren’t looking?

    • Do you take them to a butcher or do you do the honours yourself? I have been thinking about this but not sure if I can kill anything.

  • +5

    $6.99 Costco roast chickens

    • +4

They are awful imo. Tried one and never again.

      • +2

I tried them twice just to be sure and agree with you.

    • Never any there and need to queue..

      • +1

guess it depends where you are - always been available at my Costco (Canberra) every time I've been.

  • +1

    The Tradie lunch, Supersized!

  • +1

Lots of debate around the flavour of the Coles chicken. What is the best value chicken then? (Not necessarily the cheapest, but the best balance between price and taste).

    • +1

Costco chickens. $6.99, over 1kg each, very juicy, so no hiccups when you eat chunks of dry Colesworth chook meat.

  • +1

Sorry what’s the proof of this deal? The link just goes to their website. How do you preorder? What is the wait time?
And doesn’t Woolworths offer same thing?

  • -1

Just went to coles, the staffs told me they never heard of hot chicken platter deal

  • I don't get it. I eat coles chooks all the time and the quality is pretty consistent. on the odd occasion i get a bit of a gamey taste which reminds me what im eating, but besides that I think theyre great. woolies too.

  • +2

Ordered yesterday and picked up today. I went to the deli to pick it up today and the staff didn’t know how to print the label. Another team member figured it out and they have to search for the platter on the scales at the deli. The platter tastes good and good value.

    • You ordered in store, or over phone?

      • +2

In store. The person in store had to ask someone what to do.
