Closest Free Parking for Sydney Airport

Just wondering if anyone know the best closest place to park for Sydney airport. From there one can catchup Uber/Taxi.

I know Mascot is there but i would expect it would be hard to find free parking spots. On other side, Wolli Creek is good and can even catch a train. However, I expect Wolli Creek would be difficult.

Does anyone have any hack and go to suburb to park?

Why not catch Uber from your house to your nearest train station and use the train to Airport.

I live in Wolli Creek. Do not leave your car within the area. Either you see your car with big sticker or you are contacting ALL the towing company. Too much hassle.

      Why not catch Uber

      surge pricing.

    • +9

Because of the outrageous train fee for using the airport stations. Such a scam

      • +3

I wish it were cheaper too, but it's hardly a scam. Someone had to pay for the infrastructure, and who better than the people who use it?

Be thankful for having a train service to the airport. Cities that don't have it are second rate (cough Melbourne).

        • +35

I don't agree.. It's a part of the network, we don't charge people extra to use the other new stations. If you want to discourage car use, make public transport affordable.

          • +1

@Horacio: Affordable is a relative of course, but someone who has stumped up for airfare will presumably be able to afford the $15 train fare. It's surely not prohibitively expensive for the vast majority of users.

(That said, there's probably something to be said for allowing airport workers to not pay the premium. But they're a specific category)

As I said, someone had to pay for the airport line. They just chose to do it through a different funding model, being a PPP. You were either going to pay for it through your taxes, or through a more targeted user-pays model.

            • +3

              @[Deactivated]: Sheesh. Agreed.

The only times I have used the train connection to or from the airport, cost of the ticket didn't even register in my mind.

I'm coming off, or going to, an 8 hour flight and I balance that against travel time, car costs, and the massive hassle of getting a relative to drive me. I've done the train, I've been shuttled by relatives, and my last trip was a hiring a $200 12 person shuttle service.

I've caught trains to loads of airports overseas- some are dirt cheap (the NYC airports), some are pretty bloody terrible (most airports around London), some are expensive and fast (Hong Kong). I didn't even know that Kingsford Smith was $15, and now that I do, I still don't care in the slightest and this information will probably drop out of my mind as still irrelevant compared to all other factors. It's just great to have that option even exist.

          • @Horacio: You do realise that construction of that line was privately funded, right? So it's not technically 'public' transport. Should the state government have built those lines? Maybe. But is it fair to ask regional taxpayers to chip in on an extremely expensive, arguably non-critical infrastructure project, if they're unlikely to ever take advantage of it? Who knows. Again, it's an option. You don't have to use it. I'd pay $15 for a train to Tullamarine over Skybus any day.

The good news is that Airport Link's contract to operate the rail link is limited to 30 years, and that timer already started ticking from the 2000 Olympics. So the surcharge won't even be around for much longer.

Edits: Love the downvoting on any comment that isn't '$15 tickets are a rip off!' Sydney got to have its cake and eat it, too. Brand new stations that they didn't pay for, and a permanent alternate travel option, in exchange for a surcharge that ends in 7 years.

        • +4

No extra charge to use the new Sydney NW Metro stations, so there shouldn’t be extra charges at the airport.

          • @WreckTangle: Stop being a child. They're clearly very different scenarios. The airport line's connected to the network, but its construction and maintenance was funded privately by Airport Link, not the state government. They're entitled to charge extra to cover those costs, just as you're entitled to decide if you want to pay or not. At least it's an option. Melburnians would kill for a train to Tullamarine instead of Skybus.

        • +2

Have to agree, anything to do with transport around Melbourne is a torrid affair. The drive from my house to the airport (approx 40kms) took almost as long as the flight to Perth.

      • +7

Get down at Mascot and catch a Bus to airport. You can avoid the outrageous train fee for using the airport stations.

      • A scam by definition is where someone is trying to illegally defraud you. As the pricing is very clear before you use the service how is it illegally defrauding you? Do they advertise it as free and then charge you money after you’ve ridden it?

      • +1

It's $15.74 each way. Not a scam or outrageous at all. Quite cheap compared to an Uber or taxi or parking for if there is only 1 or 2 people.

    • +2

Thanks good to know about Wolli Creek

      • Lol, it would be hard to find parking in Wolli Creek, however, if you do your car will be fine.

  • +4

Why not just fly your car with https://www.aeromobil.com/

    • +1

      ok

  • how long do you want to leave your car?

    • Just for the weekend

      • +2

take your car in for a service and leave it there for the weekend. catch a uber

        • Get it serviced at the airport?

          • @bhubb18: didn't know airports had mechanic workshops

            • -1

@Archi: Exactly my point. Hows he getting from the mechanic to the airport

              • +2

                @bhubb18: didn't i say "catch an uber"?

                • @Archi: then what's the point of taking the car to the mechanics?

in other words, just catch an uber from home.

                  • @tattooedarchivist: maybe OP doesn't live near the airport,
maybe OP might actually need the car serviced

sydney airport is close to lots of industrial estates and loads of mechanic workshops…

            • @Archi: I mean they do, just usually not for personal automobiles.

Closest Free Parking for Sydney Airport

The airport manager's car parking spot.

  • Have you looked at Blu Emu parking? I haven't used it but they have a free shuttle bus

    • Yeah. Its $35 per day. That would be an overkill spending.

      • Yeah that's crazy. I've not had trouble finding free all day parking at Mascot when visiting friends there, look down in the direction of the alexandria canal - in fact qantas has a staff car park down there i believe

      • No it's more like ~$15/day if you pre-book and only need to fly domestic.

You could probably get a taxi or uber to send you to the international terminal though if you wanted.

      • Did you do an estimate? I got $40.5 for Friday to Sunday. 6pm

      • I used Blu Emu parking last week. It was ~$40 for 3 days, Fri, Sat and Sun. You get the free shuttle bus from and to the parking and domestic terminal.

  • +2

Just drive towards the long term car park and pick out the best bushes on the left to hide your car .

    • +16

or park on the runway. I have never seen police or parking rangers there.

  • +1

I lived in Seven Hills, I learnt that just using public transport to airport is not that difficult even the need to catch train at 3.40am. you can leave your car at home.

  • +1

Where are you coming from OP? And how many of you are there? I find you’re dammed off you do and dammed if you don’t with airport parking

Train you have the train fare. If you drove you have tolls (depending on where you are coming from), fuel, and then parking.

If there are multiple people coming (ie 2 or more) cheapest and most convenient way to get to the airport would be to train it to Mascot and then Uber from mascot station.

If you must drive, some of the back streets of Alexandria, Tempe, St Peter’s, etc has unlimited parking but it can be hard to get a park. If you are doing this factor in some buffer time

    • If going to international then crossing over tempe recreation reserve and parking in the back streets is a good option, but a bit far to the domestic

  • +6

Train to Sydney airport is expensive — so forget about parking near the train station.

Bus routes 350 & 420 go through the airport so you might want to look up the routes and find some quiet suburbs that you can park your car. I think streets in Eastlakes have unmetered parking and walking distance to bus stops to take 350 to the airport.

    • +1

Yeah bus routes are your cheapest option, seconding this.

  • +4

There's a page for cheap ways to get to airports.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/cheapest_transfers_to_aust…

    • For Sydney, why there is walk+train option while the bus+train seems to be the same cost - please someone confirm this? For adult fare, Opal is no longer the only way, tap with credit card is the same thing.

      • It's not the same cost. You have to pay for the bus trip too.

        • I see train cost to Mascott is about $5 (from Seven Hills, off peak), and on separate cost, bus is $2.24 from Mascot to DomesticT2 - I do not know how much the combine fare with transfer. Checking Opal activity, there is one small transfer from train station to my home which I took bus that I see in Opal activity costed 24c. Therefore I'm guessing the cost earlier will cost $5+24c.It may be good if someone can confirm this.

  • +3

Catch a train to mascot then uber from mascot, you avoid the airport station fee

    • +1

Not worth it, you might as well pay the airport station fee at around $15 and save alot of time

From Mascot station to international airport, my uber stated $21.72 for comfort uber and $16.73 for Uberx and $34.14 for premier.

      • Yea fair, I lived there several years ago and it was ~$8-10 if I remember correctly

        • +1

It's worth it if you're travelling 2+ more people. But for one person, take the train but Uber has gone up so much…… last time I used it was like 6 years ago.

      • +2

might as well pay the airport station fee at around $15

$60 for a family of four ?????? What a rip off.

        • To my understanding it's around $15 per person, minimum age 4, just as long everyone has their card to pass through. I am pretty sure anyone under 4 years is free as child opal cards start at age 4

  • -2

There is also a risk of your car being damaged while parking on the street for days (hailstones, accidents, etc). I'd just either take public transport or uber/taxi/shuttle to the airport.

    • +3

Some of us park on the street permanently ya know!

Hey OP look at Valda Ave, Arncliffe. No parking signs and $10 Uber to the Airport.

  • Why not:

    1. Uber/Taxi or Bus to your train station > train it to Mascot > Mascot bus to airport
      or
    2. Uber/Taxi or Bus to your train station > train it to central > central to airport

I refuse to pay the $15 airport trainstation gate fee as I chose option 1

  • +1

Park at home and get a family member or friend to drive you?

  • -1

I love a bargain as much as anyone, but you're competing with 100,000 passengers per day. If anyone knows a street parking hack to outplay 100K other punters they're not gonna share.

    • -3

Fair point. Yourpoint is validated by lack of concrete ideas in this thread :)

  • Just pay for parking at the blu emu car park.

  • Pay up

  • +1

A lot of the street parking now has 4p and 8p signs, so you risk getting a fine. Not worth the hassle imo.

Try one of the car parks on King St, Mascot. If you're flying Domestic you can walk to the airport easily from there but the car parks have shuttles.

  • +1

What does the airport train cost? $15?
I don't know how far you're driving but surely the cost of fuel + an Uber (and all of the hassle of trying to find free parking) is hardly worth it.

I catch the train to the airport every time. Admittedly my work expenses most of these trips, but I'll do it for my own personal trips, as well. It's super simple, especially if you're already on the airport line (no line change).

    • we live central Sydney and milady is happy to pay $40-50 for a taxi each way to SYD airport

you could google 'sydney airport shuttle bus' - https://www.gosydneyshuttle.com.au/ quoted $50 for 2 from nearby hotel so that's why we take a taxi

  • +1

Catch train to Wolli and walk through the park

    • When I was going to Westmead Hospital I use to park at Leagues club and enjoy the nice walk through the peaceful parklands . Its crazy on the Hospital side no free parking forever.

  • +1

I would park across in Tempe, but that was @ 8 years ago. I noticed that Council is now locking the gate, at night time.
They may have brought in more restrictions. I heard staff would park at St George Rowing club.

Maybe there's a club nearby you can join that has free/cheap parking.

    • +2

      Thanks

Kyaeemagh or Pagewood. Residential and easy to park. I did it for a weekend.

  • +1

Coward Street, Mascot. Depends on time of day - evening or weekend should be fine.

  • Just move to Brisbane and walk everywhere… :D

  • +3

Did they close the opal loop hole where you can tap on with minimum balance and exit with a negative balance ?

  • How much is an uber/didi on average going cbd->airport? Out of interest

  • +1

park at banksia or rockdale then catch route 420 bus to airport.

  • Coward st, Mascot unlimited free parking, though you might need to fight tradies/woolies drivers for a spot.

  • +1

    Dubbo

  • +1

In the past i have used one way car hire. Pick up near you, load up the car, drive, leave it at the airport.

  • If you're anywhere near the train system, or it's cheap to get to a train station, I dunno why you just wouldn't use that - sometimes connivance is worth a few dollars.

  • It's $40.50 for blue emu for the weekend. In Friday and out Sunday.
When you' re a few people it's usually cheaper to do this than the train

    • +1 for Blu Emu. Recently I paid just $95 for a week - same as one way train fare for five of us, considering the outrageous station access fee.

  • What Uber fair price are you willing to pay/Uber travel time length?

  • We have a 6am international flight coming up, and it looks like one benefit of flying this early is that the night bus that runs instead of trains from around 2am go to the airport and bypass the train station access fee. It comes up as around $4 to get to the airport.

Having said that, we already have booked an alternative before I realised this.
