Travel Insurance for Family Member Who Doesnt Have a Credit Card

Hi all,
My parents are looking at going overseas however they dont own a credit card.
Just wondering if there's a credit card that i can signup to pay for their flights so they qualify for travel insurance?
It looks like bankwest platinum is for cardholder and spouse.
I unfortunately cant tag along with them.
The parents are over 60yo but less than 80yo

cheers

Credit card travel insurance policies usually offer minimal/basic cover. They might even have age limits. The annual fee for a high end credit card with 'better' insurance might be high.

For someone of those ages, it might be worth considering a more comprehensive policy (eg Cover-More) - especially if they might have any specific medical needs.

  • I saw one at NAB I think, platinum debit card

  • Are they both employed/would they actually both be able to successfully acquire a credit card of any description?

'over 60yo but less than 80yo'

… is ludicrously vague (a huge range), especially in the context of your inquiry. If you actually divulge their ages (give or take a year), we might be able to provide some informative advice.

  • I'm guessing your dad is in his late 70s and no longer employed, and your mum is in her early 60s and has a job, but wants to retire ASAP. Is that right?

Frankly, in this situation I would advise you to simply take out actual travel insurance from a company that specialises in it. It would be a lot less hassle, and more 'cut-and-dry' should the insurance actually be required.

    • both retired
      dropped the bombshell this week.
i thought they were trolling but nope, they renewed their passports and paid the flights/ tour already.
The only good thing is that it's not next week (they're going later this year), so it still gives me time to create a citibank account.
The age range was because i saw something in bankwest's travel insurance for over 80yo. They're 75 and 63yo

It seems like an incredible hassle to sign up for a credit card simply to get the benefit of travel insurance. Why don't you just take out a standalone policy from one of the dozens of Travel Insurance providers?

    • This.

      Travel insurance is relatively inexpensive.

Shop around for the best policy for the best price (always read the PDS to determine if the policy suits your needs)

But then parents probably require a fee free CC for whilst on holiday(?)

Have you checked the premiums for over-60s? Not so inexpensive…

        • yeah, just checked….. not so inexpensive. good to know for the future…

          • @altomic: I'm organising my 81yo mother-in-law's European trip for November - I've advised her to go medical-only @$270

    compare cost benefits,
    some banks do small limits
Most hospitals overseas let you die if you don't show them a credit card,
Showing them an overpriced luxury insurance document is useless in an emergency.
Idiotic entry visas also send you down a 2hr waiting line if you pay in cash. This is just in case you overstay thay can rob exorbitant fees on your card for overstaying. No mercy for flight delays, if you miss a flight because of a multi hour customs wait no insurance will pay!

They'll need a credit card for the trip, ideally no annual fee (no complimentary insurance). Compare medical only travel insurance
PSA: eveyone needs to settle on a credit card while they are still working - once you retire it's (currently) very hard to apply for a new card without lodging a pay slip.

  • If they dont need a credit card then no point. Just go with RACV or do some shopping.

  • Just wondering if there's a credit card that i can signup to pay for their flights so they qualify for travel insurance?

Maybe, but the annual fee will most likely be more than just getting a real travel insurance policy.

  • Sign them up as a supplementary cardholder and then pay using their credit card.

  • Thanks for the comments everyone,
I will purchase travel insurance separately.

    For context
They dropped the bombshell this week.
i thought they were trolling but nope, they renewed their passports and paid the flights/ tour already.
The only good thing is that it is not next week (they're going later this year), so it still gives me time to create a citibank account.
I will still try and signup for Bankwest platinum - so they have a travel credit card for hotels etc etc.
