What Is Your Current Winter Jacket?

Ok so what are you wearing right now ? I will start
For my morning commute the days that I go to work its The North Face Men's Aconcagua 2 - its close to 6 degree when I leave so it keeps me warm and toasty.

For going on my walks/cycling its Kathmandu Arbury Men's Jacket which is smart looking soft-shell which takes care of the wind.

Lastly day to day shop/grocery its Patagonia Better Sweater 1/4-Zip which is casual still warm.

BTW I didn't get any of them on retail price obviously - the TNF was like 180 bucks and the Kathmandu was and Patagonia were like 90$ on sale.

Comments

  • Kathmandu drFill 650 mostly. Otherwise Superdry WindTrekker

  • Outerwear is something I don't mind splurging on because it'll last you a lifetime if you treat it right, and like quality leather, patinas and fits better over time.

I alternate between a Fjallraven Greenland, a navy Gloverall duffel coat, or layer a leather jacket (Schott) or waxed cotton (Belstaff).

Jil Sander for Uniqlo hybrid down jacket. A little more oversized and stylish than your run of the mill puffer but the flared sleeves tend to knock things over… $49.99 on final sale.

  • I used to own an L.L.Bean jacket. They have good products. Currently I have a Decathlon's down jacket, which is a good value for money. Not sure why they aren't as popular but I believe they fit right in OzBargain's value system especially when on sale.

  • cheapo but quite stylish puffer from Puma and Adidas as well as even more cheapo but stylish puffer from Jack and Jones,
saw a nice puffer from Tommy Hilfigur but was $499 so diss that.
oh cheapo acrylic but cashmere wool wannabe and lookalike, only cannot stand around naked flames.

  • A short sleeve shirt. Not even cold.

I have found that historically that most of the time a good soft shell jacket is adequate for Sydney winters.

I have an OR Ferrosi and Transfer - I tend to wear the Transfer more as it is warmer and doesn't need layering.

However, the weather we have had the past 2 years seems to be a little different.

I love technical gear and think its such a huge QoL upgrade however a lot of is overpriced and the line is blurred between just being a fashion item vs high performing technical item.

I was in the states recently and was so tempted to splurge on some expensive gear but refrained because I really don't need any thanks to one of my best OzB purchases ever - a Soartd power stretch pro jacket (Soartd Global Storm) for $99.

I can literally wear these jackets 24/7 like a second skin, they just require a bit of layering depending on the temps.
I've even worn this jacket snowboarding and it was perfect, much better than any of my previous gear.

I was so impressed with this jacket that I emailed the owner of the closing down company and bought all his remaining stock to give to my boys as workwear and to keep some extras for myself.

We can work all day in the rain now and comfortably!

Don't invest in just the brand, invest in the fabric used and check reviews by many of the outdoor gear review sites/reddit.

I think most people in Sydney lean towards more fashionable items because we don't really have a dire need for good technical gear but in colder countries they depend on them so I've found their reviews and feedback to be more relevant to the quality, performance and value.

    Barbour Ashby + Layers

  • Knitwear/ merino wool jumpers currently.

  • Work wise office attire is a Merino MjBale overcoat. Heavy by very toasty and ticks the work formal box.

Outside work my fav daily is the Arcteryx atom LT. So light and compact. I have the Thorium but find it too hot for Sydney winters. Inl also have an older Lafuma convertible jacket that has a removable shell with a down inner for even alpine conditions.

  • I just go everywhere with a $20 kmart doona wrapped around me.

  • a Sean John puffy jacket that my dad gave to me. been using it for over 12 years now.
just a great jacket all around, very warm in winter. surprisingly durable, the filling is still thick and haven't lost any warmth.
its in all black and looks acceptable for work but you can also go snowboarding or hiking with it.

  • Katmandu jacket I bought on sale for $150 6 years ago…

  • A $30 sherpa lined hoodie from Kmart 10 years ago. The inside of the sleeves are padded thick and the rest of the hoodie is sherpa lined inside and still in great condition. Definitely keeps me warm

  • Canada Goose MacMillan - when I go back to the US East Coast winter
Canada Goose Crofton Vest - Spring and Fall
Patagonia Nano Air - For Sydney's winter
Suitsupply Tailored Overcoat - For going to work in Winter, Spring, and Fall

  • Denim republic women's hip-length puffer for casual use or rain, I have a Dangerfield vintage style (50s) trench for more formal and less wet occasions. I also have a lighter rain trench and a pressed wool long coat for mid-cold weather.
