What Is Your Current Winter Jacket?

Ok so what are you wearing right now ? I will start
For my morning commute the days that I go to work its The North Face Men's Aconcagua 2 - its close to 6 degree when I leave so it keeps me warm and toasty.

For going on my walks/cycling its Kathmandu Arbury Men's Jacket which is smart looking soft-shell which takes care of the wind.

Lastly day to day shop/grocery its Patagonia Better Sweater 1/4-Zip which is casual still warm.

BTW I didn't get any of them on retail price obviously - the TNF was like 180 bucks and the Kathmandu was and Patagonia were like 90$ on sale.

i only own a The North Face Men's Aconcagua so it keeps me warm

    • +1

Picked up TNF Ventrix for 150 after the whole Dan Andrews saga. Surprisingly warm and light.

  • +1

Merlin leather motorbike jacket with a bonds hoodie underneath for my morning commute on the motorbike.

Unless it's ridiculously cold I'm fine with any sort of hoodie.

    • I have a Merlan Shenstone Mesh Jacket. It was probably my favourite bike jacket in summer.

I dont ride much in winter but have been eyeing off the Perton or Edale for sometime.

How do you rate Merlins Leather Jackets? I run a Black Pup Moto leather jacket myself and have been happy with it.

      • +1

Had the Merlin for two years and it's great. It's the vintage look I wanted and very comfy

  • For my morning commute the days that I go to work its The North Face Men's Aconcagua 2 -

I only wear a t-shirt when I'm driving and let the car heater keep me warm. Can't stand driving with jackets on. Or are you catching public transport to work?

    • +1

      Yup I catch a bus

  • +4

Me? Superdry from an ozbargain post of course

Living in Brisbane, I barely need winter clothes.
Most days of the 3ish months it's cooler weather in SEQ, I wear a black denim jacket (Because I'm cool and mysterious) .
On colder days I wear a music festival windbreaker that isn't very thick.
And on cold nights, I have a thick zip-up hoodie.

    • +1

I wear thermal underwear to keep my skinny legs warm and at least a hoody in Brisbane. Brrrr

  • I actually have a Kathmandu Arbury as well, I wear it to work everyday.

  • TNF Nuptse which I zip into a TNF Mountain Jacket when it rains.

  • +2

It hasn't gotten cold enough here in Sydney to resort to down yet. When it does, I'll probably pull out one of my cheapo Nepalese-branded light down sweaters. Got an old 1990s Marmot puffy down parka that will might see some use if I don't otherwise dress properly for the weather. But so far, it's one of the long sleeved linen shirts that was on Ozbargain a couple months ago, or a lightweight windshell walking to the shops at night.

Having lived in properly cold places, I discovered that just relying on a 'warm' jacket isn't much use. Keeping your feet, hands, head warm will reduce the need for a giant jacket.

    • +3

      …just relying on a 'warm' jacket isn't much use…

I'm with you. A jacket is just another layer to me, and will vary depending on the other layers that I'm wearing.

      • +2

Jeans are probably close to the worst possible common thing to wear in winter. They look warm, but they are about as insulating as linen.

Even my chinos are more windproof than jeans.

        • +1

Jeans are probably close to the worst possible common thing to wear in winter.

Uniqlo used to sell heattech jeans; they were perfect.

OzB deal sourced Macpac Halo jacket

    • +1

I'm still waiting for past 2years for this deal return… :-\

      • By my count, the deal was available at least 7 times over the last two years.

        • +1

I kept missing them and/or I'm looking for the hooded Halo

  • +1

    Canada Goose 😛

    • Good stuff - too expensive for me - when do they generally have a sale?

      • +4

I was joking. I don't own anything that expensive (that I can think of)…unless an S23 Ultra phone on a plan counts…

Edit: actually our fridge was about $2,000 from memory.

    • +1

I looked it up, and my jaw dropped. One can fly to Thailand and get a custom-made jacket with all the whizbangs for less than their prices.

      • While there's definite luxury price creep, they're still very well made and rated for Antarctic expeditions. Moncler charges comparable prices for pure fashion puffers.

      • You are not getting Canada Goose quality (even just for their insulation properties) at Thailand.

  • +1

For the cool mornings I have a Northface fleeced softshell I bought for $20 at an Op Shop in Ballina, below that (I live in New England so well below zero is a common wake-up) I have a Macpac Halo down Jacket I bought on sale for about $70. If I am working I have various supplied work polarfleeces, softshell, raincoat, jumpers, but all in High Vis so I don't wear them away from work.

  • I have a collection of jackets. I actually think it's becoming a problem. 3 leather jackets (goat, buffalo and cow hide ((actually almost bought one made from horse leather 2nd hand in Japan))). 2x winter coats, GStar and Obey. Then several Dickies and other assorted brands like Napapijri, Vans & Adidas.

Always keep a Dickies in the car in case I get caught out.

Wearing the same jacket every day is dull though.

    • Honest question here- how warm is leather? Does it insulate or is it essentially a nice looking windshell?

      • +2

Depends on the lining. Obviously great at stopping wind.

Durability is probably the biggest selling point.

My oldest jacket looks as good if not better than when I bought it.

      • +1

Not very warm, I have a cow hide and a lamb hide. Both need something under it to keep warm. It looks great though especially once the leather have patinaed.

  • +13

    Macpac halo ✊

    • Thats the official OzB winter uniform

  • Did you find them on sale through Ozb?

  • Doesn't get that cold in Perth, but have a M&S Coat for colder nights out

TNF heavy duty down bought in, of all places, Hong Kong (but for a trip to North China in winter)

lighter duty - Aldi down jacket

I am finding that base layers work much better keeping me warm. Thermal running tights and shirts, merino wool, even basic poly tops. Big jackets only emerge for brief periods

    • There used to be a big TNF outlet store in Tsim Sha Tsui just on the Kowloon side of the harbour- they sold good discounted stuff.

      • From memory bought mine at the Stanley Markets (was in early 2000s); might have been the island outlet for the TST store? Surprisingly large amount of winter gear was for sale in HK. Then again everyone froze it it ever got below 15C and would pull out the down coats

        • Yeah that's the other place that gets mentioned, but much more luck of the draw for while seconds might have made it there from a random production line.

You went to the right place!

  • Surplus German Flecktarn jacket, aka European smock, don't know if it's a reproduction but it did have a German Mark in the pocket. Apparently Germany burns their surplus jackets these days so you can only buy reproductions. It isn't proper waterproof anyway but it's big and has lots of pockets. It's also very off-putting, makes you look a bit like a skinhead, so I often get both seats to myself even on a crowded bus.

    • Most military don't want to be impersonated or co-opted by association into any other causes. Hence destroying their surplus.

      • I've always just thought it was more than a little tacky to wear millitary clothing unless you were actually in it.

Parts of the US or China, it seems fashionable though.

It's like seeing obvious civilians walking around in those shirts that say ARMY on them.

        • Tacky AF

        • I work right near a large RAN base and even they don't wear their kit off base if they can avoid it. It makes you look like Travis Bickle or Elaine's co-worker from Seinfeld.

        • Someone bought it for me as a gift actually.

  • Going to office: trench coat over suit jacket.
Casual outdoor: puffer jacket / coat, leather jacket or M65 field jacket with liner. Thomas Cook TCX jacket if raining.

    • +2

      trench coat over suit jacket.

      Wow

      • +1

Thanks but I'm old school and work for a financial institution. At least I stopped wearing a tie after covid.

  • +1

    uniqlo light down

  • Decathlon down jackets. They fit well, light and packable, so I wear them everywhere; on the way to work, hiking, walking the dog, shopping etc.

  • +1

I’m in Melbourne, my go to jacket is the Arcteryx Atom LT. When it’s colder or wet I chuck the Alpha SV on top.

For super cold times I have the Arcteryx Camosun down parka.

For not so cold temps I just use a Macpac vest.

    • how do you find the arcteryx jackets, are they worth the premium over TNF equivalents?

      • +1

Yes they are. My first mid layer jacket (that I can’t remember the name now) lasted 13 years and my first Alpha SV jacket lasted 12 years.

It does need special cleaning detergents and DWR treatment. Costs about $6-7 per wash.

      • +2

The answer to this is pretty nuanced. TNF has a big range in gear quality/seriousness. Far as I know, the top end TNF stuff would be totally over the top- think Antarctic research stations and 8000M peaks. I don't think Arcteryx makes anything to this level. On the other hand, TNF makes plenty of cheap crap too for US college students.

Arcteryx also shifted production from British Columbia to Asia a decade or more back, kept their prices and image sky high.

I own two bits of Arcteryx kit and neither are outstanding. Okay, but definitely paying for the image and the cut over the materials.

  • +1

    Wednesday I wore a tshirt.

Last 2 days it got a bit chilly and wet and so wore a light 3/4 sleeve jumper. Well, top really.

When it gets below 5, I'll add a merino layer underneath 🤷‍♀️

  • I have a couple of puffers for casual / weekend wear, but for commuting I have coats. Long, dark, swirly coats. Can't go wrong in a swirly coat.

  • +1

    Macpac halo everyday💪🏿

  • +1

I have long arms, which makes it so hard to find a nice jacket.

  • My wife has a thing about coats and jackets - I have 4 coats and at least 5 jackets.
I often wear one of my puffers or a big thick Sportscraft.
My favourite is a dirty old Rainbird left over from work because I wear it fishing and boating.😁

  • Wool overcoat

  • +1

    Barbour jacket

  • I bought a fake TNF nuptse online out of curiosity and it's turned out to be my favourite jacket for warmth and water resistance. A fraction of the price compared to a genuine but there's barely any noticeable difference in quality or the packing of the down.

  • 2-3 hoodies

One is usually my work hi vis hoodie and 1-2 thick hoodies i got for presents

If it snows I got an old thick winter jacket but praying it doesn't snow

  • +1

    Still in shorts and t-shirt

  • +2

Jeez, i must be a tightass because i never buy winter jackets and always wear my company's outdoor jacket all the time. No logo on it so im not concerned.

    • What, even when you go out somewhere with family or friends to, say, dinner or movies?

  • +1

This is Ozbargain, so Macpac Halo of course!

  • +2

I’d wear my Oodie to a wedding or funeral if I could.

  • +1

Goto jacket - Helly Hansen DUBLINER JACKET
If I need a puffer - Macpac Halo

    • Nice. I recently picked up that same HH on Amazon Warehouse for $48

      • +1

Woah! That's the bargain of the year!
        I love this jacket.
I originally got the size S during an off-season sale from Glue stores, and over the years, it got tighter around the waist. I didn't want to try anything else, so I got one size up from HH eBay store for half price.

        • Yes good deal was advertised as "Like New" had tags and all.

Re: size that's the common feedback I read in a previous deal for this jacket. Definitely size up.

Just got back from a hike with this jacket, silly me didn't even realise until recently that it has a hood tucked in 🥴

  • I have an Article One, was $40 from Myer years back it's still going great

  • +1

    Still wearing Tshirt.

  • I got 2

Normal night: Random jacket I bought from bonds 15years ago
Date night: Ben Sherman Harrington jacket

  • Platatac Harry Hard Jacket 1.2 (FR)

  • Today was wearing a Milwaukee heated jacket with M12 2Ah battery from deal listed on here

  • Arc'teryx Thorium AR - I've had it for 3 years now. Hasn't missed a beat, feathers don't come out like they do in the Patagonia or Macpac ones.

  • Im in tassie so body requires more warmth and waterproofing but…

Current favourites are all from nz brands
    Ridgeline, betacraft, stoney creek etc

  • Got some of puff and leather-like during Aldi sale. Still going strong. Otherwise just normal shirts

  • +1

Any jacket/jumper that are from my previous companies I've worked at. Usually goes with shorts and thongs.

  • High-vis bomber jacket. Yolo

  • Cycling through 2 Aldi jackets - the recent one is the lilac ski jacket from the recent Ski Sale but, the versatile one is from last year where it's a 3 in 1.

I have 4-5 more coats depending on coldness, rain, and occasion.

Ultimately, I'm tempted to get some pea coats for non-rainy days (lol Melbourne), or a red coat to really fit the whole username ;)

  • $20 puffer from catch. Plenty warm, but I think it's because I run hot.

  • +1

The hair on my back is all I need in QLD.

    • 100% - sometimes it hits 12 degrees in the morning in FNQ and I need a jumper too!
