Any cheap 918 or 919? No need latest as long can decode x265 and has usb3.0. Mine is 10 years old synology waiting to be upgraded lol

    • +1

my 2016 Qnap just died 2 months ago, Bought AMD 5600G mainboard with 2.5G LAN 6 x SATA ports 16G ram for about $850 with case Nve Hdd and used my old 4x NAS discs.

Running Proxmox with Truenas Plex and a VM of Windows 11 with Blue Iris. Still in testing stages but I like 1 minute to boot up or shut down time, Pc only using 50W power same as the old Nas but heaps faster than what you'll buy for the same $ from Synolagy or Qnap.
Big learning curve but it looks like it's paying off.

DS923+ cpu vs own built for $100 less https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-amd_ryzen_embedded…

      • Wish I had your skill/patience. I guess 50% of the NAS cost is the software/convenience. The box size is also nice.

      • +1

How are you finding blueiris? On fence about that vs zoneminder.

        • Only installed it the other day to see if it works on Proxmox. Still haven't had time to set up storage pools and everything else.

        • Just tried Zoneminder on Debian, problem is the Vm's are on 192.168.47.xxx and my cams are on 192.168.46.xxx can't find a way to point outside the subnet or find the login url for password.

          • @jizmo: You could put it on the same subnet. If hosting on a vm, add a second nic.

Otherwise youre going to have to make your cameras routable.

If you want to expose zoneminder to the outside world i recommend using nginx proxy manager.

            • @Pwoar: Using Opnsense changed firewall rules so 46 can see 47 and visa versa Blue iris works but some setting missing in ZM.
Thanks for your advice when I find time I'll have another look

  • Yeah, some reasonable deals. Just bought 3 of the Ironwolf 8TB and a Synology 1821+ ($1,299) to replace my Xpenology HP Microserver Gen8 that started making funny noises this week … could have replaced a HDD or two … but that's less fun. Got tired of not having the latest DSM.

Hey rep, put some 10GB ethernet cards up and some additional RAM to take more of my money.

    • +1

DS1821+ is tempting for that price. Wish we know specs and pricing for DS1823+ now.

      • +1

With the DS1823xs+ not having 10GBe I wasn’t holding out much hope for the 1823+. With DSM7.2 now allowing storage pools on NVMe it effectively means 10 bays, I’m keen to see if off brand drives work without issue here.

        • im about to buy the ds1821

is there a reccommended ram upgrade? might as well buy the ram together now

also can the OS be installed on the NVME? might move my 1tb NVMes into the NAS when i upgrade my PCs to a 2tb with so many deals coming out

          • @furythree: I hear you about the RAM, I also feel like upgrading immediately, though 4GB will be enough for basic storage for a handful of users. Link to NAS Compares article: https://nascompares.com/2020/04/06/synology-nas-memory-upgra…

NVMe options are trickier as only Synology drives are officially supported, read up on this, but this link may be of value. Github link: https://github.com/007revad/Synology_HDD_db

            • @motomon: wasnt there some mod customers made to enable all NVME drivers not just synology

is that what the github is

              is 4gb ram enough for a 8 x 12tb system?

              • @furythree: Depends on your use case, I never had any issues with 4GB, 5 drives with up to 3 concurrent users (1 streaming video, the other 2 small file access). I don't run any VMs or anything very demanding.

    • *follow-up: DS1823xs+ has 10Gbe on board, I was thinking of the DS1522+ in my earlier post.

  • Want a Dx-517 but seems no discount offer recently :(

    • You and me both. Never seem to be any decent deals on them lately.

  • +1

Just a heads up for anyone looking at this for a Plex server - DS923+ has no graphics, so hardware based transcoding is off the table

    • Cheers for that, what would be a good setup for a plex server?

      • +2

Unfortunately for Synology not much in the home space anymore besides the DS423+ unless you can still track down a 920+ for cheap, and the business grade ones are far too expensive.
Could also look at other brands like qnap that offer a fair few affordable home based NAS still - https://www.qnap.com/en-au/product/compare?products=ts-462,t…

        • I think I may have tracked down one of the last new ds920+ in the country earlier this month out of Darwin of all places, and paid about $80 more than this 923 deal. They’ve been selling routinely in the $1k range for most of the year on eBay.

QNAP was definitely considered but was uncertain about their sketch security history.

        • Looking at the specs for the DS423+ (https://www.synology.com/en-global/products/DS423+#specs) it doesn't seem like it has graphics either - not familiar with how they write the specs out - do they list a GPU or some other hardware accelerated transcoder thing?

          • +1

@trawg: Basically if it's an Intel based NAS, then it has graphics. The DS423+ has got a Celereon J4125 in it which contains the UHD Graphics 600.

      • Honestly as the owner of a 418 play (weak with limited transcoding abilities), I personally found it easier to just avoid transcoding completely and just use plex on a firestick to play things. Much cheaper and easier solution.

      • Asustor's Intel based NAS have the best hardware bang for buck, the software is less great but they make for a good Plex box. QNAP have more polished associated software, but the hardware is definitely less value for money.

        • Yep Asustor and Teramaster are best bang for buck.
As far as software goes, it is true that Synology has the best software and OS, with Qnap close behind - but if you run your plex server in a Docker image (which seems alot of people do nowdays) i don't think it really matters much.

    • Plex server test on it

      https://youtu.be/ds1BmxjpMxw

  • @Computer Alliance rep any deals on 12 or 16tb drives (internal or external shuckable)

need more storage to fill the nas

  • Finally, a decent price for the 8TB. Bought one to fill the 4th slot on my 920

  • +1

+1 for some 10TB drives rep?

  • +2

Other ironwolf drives here: Seagate ironwolf

The 8TB remains the better deal for most people.

    • any idea if prices will come down further next few weeks on drives?

    • Thanks chief, couldn’t resist the 8TB

  • I'd been waiting for a good deal for this - just picked it up the synology with 2 8TB drives. 3% off eBay gift cards helps too (bupa rewards)

    • Doh, I feel like a poor OzBargainer. Been with them forever and had no idea 😗

  • Any thoughts if its better to buy the 8tb here or just go with the groupbuy being organized by one of the members here? I think the groupbuy is for 12tb or 16tb.
    Thank you!!

    • +1

the only concern with the group buy is that they dont seem to be genuinely new drives

just refurbished to look like one. that being said the seller has been around for years and honored all warranty and neology is great to deal with

so if u dont mind taking a punt get the group buy

otherwise keep an eye out for deals as prices have been falling and the difference is like 20-30 bucks for retail warranty via local retailer. worth doing that if youre only getting 1-2 drives for convenience and peace of mind

  • Just bought a 8TB from Centrecom for $250 yesterday :'(

    • I feel you, almost did the same. Two days ago they had a 15% of store wide event at Nunawading. Was bummed about missing out, but it had a limit of 1 item per SKU.

  • The 8TB Seagate Ironwolf are non pro ?
Are Ironwolf a lot better than Exos Enterprise ?

Wonder if it would be cheaper through neology group buy?
    It was $130 here:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/769555

    • It was $130 there but also it seemed like, based on the comments, you had a 70% chance of getting a dud drive

      • +1

Nah, 70% is not accurate. It's probably more like 7%.
Don't think we will see those Amazon prices again this year.
Anyway $200 for 8TB is OK, so I got a couple.

        • Yeah probably, I was being a bit hyperbolic :)

  • Buy now or wait for potential EOFY promos… hmmm 🤔

    • Black Friday would definitely have better deals, you should wait.. It's not like housing prices, no harm in waiting :P

  • What enclosure do people use for the 8TB HDD? To me, the NAS just seems prohibitively expensive.

  • alternative USB docking station https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07RVB9162

I use an older version and it has been ok for occasional archiving use. Its a bit clunky swapping drives.

  • If anyone know they are still using "Toll" for NSW shipment ? last time it arrived in NSW then go depot (missed you) > collection point > (too big) back to depot > another collection point > (too big again) > depot, end up a week of waiting and collect in depot for a "Fricking" hard disk.

    • Few weeks ago my las 2 orders was delivered by Courierspls

      • Thanks for the update.

  • +2

We use Aus Post for nearly all residential addresses nowadays, sometimes StarTrack for orders too big for aus post to handle such as 49" monitors, large UPS etc

We use TNT/Toll and others rarely - for very large, usually corporate orders on pallets and never for eBay unless under some special arrangement. Couriers Please is generally limited to business addresses within Brisbane

Note all orders require someone at the address to receive - signature on delivery. With aus post, if no one is home the parcel will go to the PO for collection.
