This or the ironwolfs? Upgrading my 10tb ironwolfs on my ds920+…

      This

    • This!
Exos are enterprise drives built for Data Centres. They should last much longer than any desktop grade Ironwolf drives

My Exos failed. So I wouldnt trust Exos.

Same, I have lost 3 of 8 16TB x16 failed just out of warranty. Others have sector count errors and seagate support (even under warranty, says that’s normal). Good ventilation, proper enterprise mounts and power supplies. Still have 4 TB consumer seagates shucked from external enclosures 14years ago, still running great.

Exos are also cheaper than Ironwolf Pro.
So there must be a reason why they are often cheaper.
Ultrastar and Iron Wolf have been good for me.

        • Don't forget the consumer guarantee might still entitle you to replacement. If they've lasted less than the length of time it would be expected they would last, and you bought from an Australian retailer, you're entitled to replacement or repair.

          • @Pogo: I think potential data loss is the primary concern.

            • @bboT: Oh, for sure, but they mentioned warranty so always worth the reminder!

        • Have 16tb exos drives been around for more than 5 years?

          • @danielh: Most HDD are fine! But a very small percentage develop issues. Its mechanical, so unavoidable.

          • @danielh: Mine were in the External cases, they only offer 12months warranty, same drive though.

This is an 18TB Ironwolf Pro: https://postimg.cc/9D0xpTkB

This is an 18TB Exos: https://postimg.cc/Z0LVzVtc

Not sure what accounts for the dramatic random write speed difference, but it mirrors some reviews. Test conditions were the same (external dock, "quick removal" write caching policy). Specs show the same cache size (256MB) but maybe the Exos firmware uses it more aggressively.

Exos or Ultrastar have double the lifespan of ironwolfs, still long though, and better than SSDs

  • Shd i order it for NAS…?

  • +2

I got one of these for a bit more. If you don't mind 3yr warranty you can buy them from here: https://www.neology.com.au/seagate/exos/

But if were to buy another, I'd get this deal

    • The group buy works out cheaper. Wait for the group buy.

      • are neologys personally listed one brand new aus stock or extras he got from the HK seller?

      • How do I get involved in the group buy?

    • Ordered from there before? Seems really cheap. Too good to be true?

EXOS are great. Have them in my UnRaid NAS. Couldn't be happier. Just know that they're enterprize drives, so they run more noisy compared to your typical NAS drive. But my NAS has 5 14CM fans cooling it, so it's not an issue for me.

Exos is much quieter than Ironwolf in my experience. Exos is the only drive ide buy from Seagate.

    • My experience with enterprise drives is that they run quieter, with less vibration and significantly cooler.
      The only compromise is cost

Divide total price by 2 and you have my interest

What do people store on 18TB HDDs? I still have a 1TB drive I bought in 2013 and it's not even full yet.

    • Probably media storage

      • Torrents?

        • +3

So you have very basic usage and are asking what those who actually make use of their computers do with their storage? Well, lets just say, Steam takes up over 1TB for me. But obviously, you already know what people are storing on these - Music, Movies, TV Shows, and their origin is not our concern on a site like this. A good 1080p remux is over 20-30GB, 4k over 40-50GB. I have over 3000 movies in my collection.

Now, there are actual data hoarders out there as well. Some people backup parts of the internet that may be lost. For example, there is a team backing up TBs of data that is uploaded to multiple subreddits documenting the Ukraine-Russian conflict, because they could be censored or lost at any moment.

Don't ask what you would do with the space if you had it. Ask what you CAN do with the space now that you have it.

4k CCTV cams (NVR), local copy of cloud storage (videos\pictures from phones), Virtual Machines, Docker Images and a some content for Plex

    • There's always someone asking what people do with storage space, in every HDD thread.
      Amazing.
It's like that apocryphal 640K quote, but real, and on repeat.

    • I have a 32TB NAS with several hundred blu-rays ripped to it, uncompressed. It's almost full, so I'll need to upgrade another 8TB to an 18TB! Then it will be time to start a new 10 bay NAS probably. :)

    • Photo Library in conjunction with a Backblaze account - 28TB and counting.

is this cheaper than the HDD GB?
