All 700ml Gin, Rhum, Vodka $44.90 - $49 + Delivery (Free over $100) @ Brisbane Distillery Company

560

These guys make some super delicious local Brisbane gin/rhum/vodka, and with the new pregnancy label legislation they're clearing out old bottles. No pickup available unfortunately, but shipping appears to be $7-10 Australia wide (at least to urban spots, I haven't tried lots of different addresses).

Edit: thanks TheGiant, delivery is free over $100.

Usual prices for their spirits are between $75 and $100. I'd recommend the strawberry eucalyptus gin personally.

  • Anyone tried them out? Any recommendations. Couldn't find any online reviews so a bit wary.

    • I’ve been to their venue a few times and tried most of their spirits, they’re real nice. Are they world class? Probably, but I think it goes toe to toe with Roku or Four Pillars, and they’re local + independent.

      • What’s the marmalade vodka like? Is it a bit like Cointreau, like a real orange taste (seeing vodka doesn’t have much taste at all) or more like vodka with a few drops of orange in it(not much orange taste)?

        • +1

That and the Christmas gin are the only ones I haven’t tried, apologies! I suspect it’ll be halfway between those options you gave.

Also, meant to say they’re ‘probably not’ world class in the previous comment, but they’re damn good for this price.

  • Free postage over $100 also.

Are they worth $100 a bottle prob not in comparison, are they worth $50 a bottle, yes def in comparison.

    • +1

Yes it would seem to be good going for the prices. Thanks OP.

Also take note that the items with "ROP" in the name come in recycled ocean plastic bottles, not the glass. They're $5 cheaper than the glass.

      • +6

Spirits should not be stored in plastic bottles, always in glass. I wouldn't be buying any of that ROP stuff.

        Otherwise, pricing looks good.

        • +5

Yes I mentioned it so that people wouldn't miss the detail and accidentally get the one they didn't want

        • I don't think that is true. Glass is illegal for most bottle packaging and has been for 10 years or more in Sweden and PET is commonly used in Japan and many other countries.

These guys are great, I've done their gin school twice. I do NOT recommend their HMAS gin, definitely not for my tastes, otherwise they're good.

    • HMAS gin?

      • +2

Yeah, that’ll be a navy strength. Very high ABV.

        • +1

My missus bought it thinking it was navy strength. It was not. Tasted like coriander to me.

Looks like they don't sell it anymore.

          • @spirrowhack: actually higher than navy strength and the botanicals are Juniper coriander and black cardamom which makes it a bit smokey in flavour. Make a Gimlet with it, that's pretty good.

            • @JonathanLiv: We gave it away a while back. It was in a solid blue coloured bottle and was definitely regular strength gin, not that the alcohol content bothers me. I just didn't like the taste.

Just found a picture of it on image search, bottle says 43%.

    • Have you tried the strawberry eucalyptus? @spirrowhack

      • +1

I've had it in a cocktail. Can't complain.

  • +1

Their stuff is pretty good. I like the Qld Gin a lot. This is by far the cheapest I’ve ever seen it. Usually they’re $70+/bottle

  • Is almost looks like the alcohol percentage on all the gins is 13% i'm almost certain that 43% tis probably just my crappy eyes. Can someone confirm. If it is 43% ill buy a bottle of each.

    • +2

Look in other ads - definitely 43%

How girl get praegnent? How is babby formed?

  • -6

Cost way too much for local products. Should be in the 30ish at the most.

    • +4

@pacificstorm I get the feeling you're unfamiliar with the amount of tax alcohol is subject to.

      • +2

@darktiger You're quite correct there. So the local products pay the same tax costs as the imports do? If so, there is definitely sumthin' there and either way the Govt is laughing all the way to the bank while us common folks are left crying lol

    • +1

The actual cost of making spirits using sugar and turbo yeast is about $5 or less for 1L of vodka equivalent 40 proof(including electricity). And this will include distilling once, and rectification. Rectification makes a pure 96.6 ethanol you can convert to gin by diluting with water and distilling again through gin basket with whatever you want to have a gin made from. But I would prefer make a limoncello using 96 spirit, and making liquor

Very smart/annoying to put the free delivery floor at $100! Need to buy three bottles to get that, no small/cheap filler products to bump up the cart

    • Oh well… Bought 6
      gotta stack those savings :-)

  • Awesome! Just got the rum and gun!

  • Shipping in plastic bottles if that's a deal breaker for anyone.

    • Only the bottles labelled 'ROP' are plastic and those spirits are also available in glass bottles (for $5 more).

    Just be aware:
Ex porn baron Jon Athertons gin distillery evicted from West End warehouse (Courier Mail paywall)

A former internet porn baron has been ordered to vacate the warehouse which houses his trendy gin distillery, after he was accused of breaking in, after his landlord changed the locks after he fell behind in rent, a court has heard.

    That's why no pickup I guess…

    • Hi, not willing to pay the courier mail.

Can you tell us how recent this is?

Not particularly keen on giving my cash to porn "barons" either particularly if there is a good chance I won't get my gin!

      • +3

Court case currently under way - this report was from Sunday's Sunday Mail. Also mentions "Mr Atherton was last in court in February 2016 when he was cleared of criminal charges in Brisbane Magistrates Court of defrauding friends out of $1m."

Looks like a bit of a fire sale under way to raise some cash:
Court documents state that Mr Poulos arranged for the locks to be changed and to terminate the lease that morning, eight days after Mr Atherton told him that the rent and other fees of $83,037 he owed would be paid within days after he sold his lavish double-decker “cocktail bus”.
The bus is still listed online for sale, for offers over $435,000, described as “the best drinks truck in Australia”, and boasts a fully equipped bar, seating 30, “hydraulic stabilisers” and a hydraulicly raised roof.

Potential risk that some of this has been under the Brisbane River:
in March 2022 the West End warehouse was flooded and they lost a “vast amount of valuable stock and equipment”.
He did not have flood insurance and lost about $60,000, he states in his affidavit.

      • I think the biggest concern might be non delivery, not sure what issue you could have with an alleged former "porn Baron". I seriously doubt you check the "morality" of the business histories of most businesses you deal with.

  • Whats the new pregnancy label law? Ie. Does it mean other companies will have to try and clear out old stock at some stage too? :)

  • Ironbark Lemon sounds great…. anyone tried?

  • Thanks OP, got a bottle of each variant to try.

    • No updates since I got the "We've received your order" email (◍•﹏•)

Email - Smashed with OzBargain orders! https://imgur.com/a/3gHUEaC

    • Funnily enough, I haven't got that email yet!

  • Ok well at least we got an email. I wasnt super happy to find out theyre trying to stump up money to cover bankruptcy…makes this all seem more like a scam

  • anyone heard anything else yet?

    • Nope

    • Received notification from Sendle saying parcel ready to be picked up tomorrow morning and should be delivered by next week.

      • well that's positive.

      • Mine was marked ready to pick up on Thursday at midday and doesn't seem to have been collected yet. Sendle doesn't seem to be in a hurry…

        • Mine was dropped off today, between this and the FCL deals I'm set for hard liquor for a year and a bit I reckon

    • Mine arrived today!

  • Anyone tasted the rum yet?

    • +3

It's actually pretty nice. Wasn't expecting much but it's about what I'd expect quality-wise for the usual $100 price.

    • Taste-wise it's pretty good but the smell, to me at least, is awful. I basically have to hold my nose and drink it.

Could just be a personal thing. I drink caribbean rums but have never found an Australian one I liked (like the higher end bundys, beenleigh, husk, all of them tend to smell awful to me).

    Package arrived this morning.

The plastic bottles look pretty rough in person - very thin and weak, bottles of juice from Woolies feel more premium than these. Glass looks and feels fantastic though - worth the extra 5 bucks if you're popping these on a shelf.

Ironbark Lemon Vodka - 9/10 (masks the burn extremely well, and very tasty)

Marmalade Vodka - 6/10 (not bad, marmalade taste isn't that strong and the burn is a lot more prevalent in this one but beats Smirnoff any day)

Rhum - 8.5/10 (quite smooth, not much of a burn - would happily sip some of this on the rocks)

Strawberry Eucalyptus Gin - 8/10 (pretty tasty, flavour isn't super overpowering but works well - will be great with some good tonic)

Christmas Barrel Gin - 8.5/10 (quite a strong fruitcakey-cinnamon flavour - unique and really good)

    • +1

To me, the rhum has a hint of overripened banana , and not in a bad way. Quite enjoyable with soda.

  • Certain amount of irony that I still haven't received mine, no notification of shipment yet and haven't received a response to my emails. Glad others are getting theirs though!

    • Just received my shipping notification, they must still be processing the orders.

  • +1

I received mine today. The Christmas barrel gin is delicious. Unfortunately sold out now or I would have ordered more

  • -1

Got mine today. The lemonbark vodka is horrific, maybe good mixer. It tastes like dishwashing liquid
