I used to run my own pihole but it's too much to maintain if internet goes down / pain to set up vpn for outside of home access. NextDNS at $9.50 per year is a bargain and probably a fairly similar cost to running a pihole 24/7.
There is a free version which is limited to 300,000 queries.
It's pretty good. Easily worth the A$30 a year if you go over the monthly limit of 300k queries, which is surprisingly easy. You'll need to deactivate for cash back purchases and it sometimes denies Google shopping links.
