These oils are actually great for when you're trying to clean up an older, neglected or used vehicle. In fact I think it's amazing standard practice for higher mileage vehicles.

tl;dr: 1) Oil change with high quality synthetic oil and filter -> 2) oil change after only 1,000-2,000km with cheap shit oil and nulon engine cleaner -> 3) Immediate oil change with more high quality synthetic oil and fresh filter. Let me explain:

    1) The first oil change will clear out most of the existing crud, and the detergents in a good synthetic oil will continue to actively clean what's left. Good synthetic oil filters have a much higher efficiency rating, especially at lower micron levels - and they also hold more sludge. Unless you're importing, go for Ryco Syntec, they're cheapest from Sparebox ebay.

    2) After 1-2k of driving, you'll do another oil change which will remove much of the leftover sludge. Now, add any cheap oil you like even if it's mineral or out of spec, though thinner is better. Now use Nulon Extreme Engine flush, NORMALLY engine flush products are a bad idea but this particular one is solvent-free and just contains the same detergents found in synthetic oil at high concentrations. Idle for 30m with the cheap oil + cleaner blend, drive around the block and idle for another 15m. I'd personally recommend another fresh filter for this step altogether.

    3) Perform another immediate oil change and go back to using your desired oil with yet another fresh filter.

By doing it this way you "pace" the cleaning of your engine and remove almost all the risk of using an engine cleaner in the mildest manner possible. Think about it, you're not just dumping solvents into a sludged up engine. You're removing the old dirty oil, letting the synthetic oil+filter combo do a little more cleaning and capture what's leftover, then performing a very mild flush using more fresh oil. Unless your engine is extremely dirty or has existing/suspected leaks this is the best way to clean it up besides a manual clean.

It really only costs an additional $80-90 over your standard oil change except it does so much more.

  • Sound like a lot of effort and expense for an unknown and probably negligable result…if the engine hasnt had regular oil changes in the past the damage is already done and this wont fix it.
