Looks like it just contains some sugar and salt in a fancy package.

You aren’t too far from the truth however good luck using a sugar and salt sachet during an endurance event and getting the right balance of carbs and sodium.

Anyone an active user of these type of products (energy gels)?

PM me as I am doing some research on them. Thanks

    • +2

I regularly use my own homemade gel which is sugar+water+maltodextrin+flavour syrup.

      • +2

        Username checks out.

What’s the ratio? Is it watery?

        • +1

I do 7:3:1 malto sugar protein, then about 15g salt per kg total.

Taste is based on whatever flavour is in the protein + more sweetness from the sugar. I've never found it weak, the sugar adds heaps of kick to the taste.

Protein is optional but I like it.

Texture is good in both drink and syrup form. In syrup form I can get 100g into a small flask with a little water and that keeps me going for a fast 90 min run or a cruisy 2-3hrs.

Works out to be around $30-40/kg I think

      • Do you prefer syrup type products or more gel (thicker) based ones?

        • Personally i prefer a little thicker than syrup type texture, makes it a lot easier to wash down and get out of the container.

  • Great deal. These are never on sale

Woolies is selling 4 packs of 40g of Winners energy gel for $5.95.

These are $2.73 per satchel, which is quite expensive for only 25g of crab per serving. Winners has 29g of carb per serving.

Or are these different from the Winners?

    • +8

You said it yourself - one has crab the other has carbs.

In all seriousness, I reckon carbs are carbs and the Winners are better value, especially when they go on sale.

      • -1

Its very important to look at the nutritional content of these, as not all gels are the same. These have 25g of carb and 85mg of sodium per serving, whereas Winners have 29g of carb and 36mg of sodium per serving. The mixes will affect your body differently. One is not outright better than the other, they're just different

    • -1

      These are different. Very different.

      • How so?

        • These ones have to build in the really expensive cost of marketing/sponsorship with the Elite athletes.

I haven't actually tried these though, but have heard they are great and 'work' differently to other gels, so are easier on the stomach/better for performance.
(..dammit the marketing got to me too)

Top of my list of requirements for gels is ease of swallowing, and I haven't found anything that comes close to Maurten in that respect. Particularly important when there's less saliva available.

However, I haven't tried the Precision Fuel gel, which I've heard is similar in consistency to Maurten.

          • @madak: If I'm runing long enough to use gels I'm also wearing in a hydration vest, so never so fussed about ease of swallowing but that makes sense.

Never had any stomach issues with any combo of lollies, different gels, Tailwind/other drinks, Clif Bars, other snacks. Maybe I'm just lucky?

    • The taste and texture. Maurten are silky, nice tasting, semisolid gel and go down easily.
Winners cause me to gag a little, sticky AF, and the lime or caffeinated ones taste awful. I found myself hesitating to open the next Winner gel when I needed it.
I'm just getting into gels at the moment and so are trying to find the best value palatable option.
I was thinking of mostly using Winners for shorter training runs. I just hope I get used to them.

      • Try kodas… my favourite flavour is wild berry.

29.5g of carbs… but, importantly, 100% of those carbs are glucose, not fructose/glucose mix like maurten. Depending on what you want, that can be inportant.

I use both koda and maurten.

  • this the same as Sports Performance Utility Nutrition Kick?

  • +1

I've had these and these are a much thicker gel than other brands I've used (Wiggle, SIS, Clif, Winners). The other brands are essentially thick liquids while this stuff was like jelly. So if you don't like Jelly you might not like these. I had to chew them before swallowing.

  • Any idea on expiry dates?

  • +4

For those wondering - the Maurten gels are a particularly niche product (hence the cost - the audience is a pretty tight one).

Their point of difference is the particular combination & ratio of carbohydrates, which in theory allows you to ingest a higher quantity of carbs in a given timeframe. The use case for these is participants in endurance races who are going to be performing at a relatively high intensity across the event - and so they need to ingest as many carbs as possible during that time. At this price, definitely worth a try if you do this sort of thing and are looking for an extra edge.

If you are doing endurance events but at a lower intensity (ie aiming to complete rather than aiming to compete), then these are massive overkill and cheaper off-the-shelf gels would be fine as your calorie burn & carb needs per hour are much lower.

    Hope that makes sense! :-)

Name does not check out :-)

    • +3

      Its more nuanced than that.

There is some peer-reviewed evidence that these are easier to digest. Since "gut issues" effect between 50% and 95% of runners, depending on the peer-reviewed study…. an easier on the gut gel could be worth it.

Also, its easy to get flavour fatigue from the sis birthday cake flavour gel (for example), but, i'd suggest, less easy to get flavour fatigue from maurten.

Many gels dont have sodium, but this does.

      Obviously, many prefer the texture.

These packets open much easier than the gels i use (koda)… i get much stickier when i use koda (eg, 5 hours ago).

I wouldnt attribute the cost to the mix off glucose/fructose -> plenty of gels have a mix of glucose & fructose…. indeed, many runners dont want to take any fructose (because, generally, glucose(/maltodextrin) is easier to digest and use (up to, about, 60g/hour).

    More smart, more safe, Maurten

  • went to pick up an order today and the guys at the desk said they cleared out maurten of all their stock because of this deal ha
