New all-time low on the camels!!!

If you ever copied the Top Gun double high-five in high school, and don't lie, I know you did, then pay some royalties to the Church of Cruisology and Bezos Space Force with this awesome double feature of magnificent men in their flying machines (when they're not sweaty and topless playing beach sports) in stunning 4K UHD.

I hear Goose talking, he says buy it!

Maverick: use the force Rooster, use the force….oops wrong franchise. 😆

Maverick is the absolute gold standard of 4K UHD discs. If you have a good system at home and don't have it you're doing yourself a disservice.

Better yet - wait until they (one day) release the IMAX version.

Studios that film in IMAX and then release the 'standard' 4k resolution version are the ones doing a disservice to consumers.

      • The ratio expands for IMAX scenes in this?

        • If you get the IMAX version, yeah.
I doubt this UHD disc would be - otherwise they'd have plastered "IMAX" all over the cover.

edit: THIS says that there is a version with the expanded IMAX scenes, but given the ratios listed on the Amazon page, I doubt that this is the same version.
The version on the review site also has Dolby Vision - I see no reference to that on the Amazon BR disc either.

          Bit of a lottery…

          • @TheMoose: This is the version I have and the ratio expands once they're in the jets every time. I don't think the whole movie was shot in IMAX ratio.

Worth every cent, every cent if you have sense.
Seen Maverick 10times, never gets old.
    How cinema should be.

    • Isn't that aided by the fact that it aims to feel old..?

    Cinema Masterpiece.

    • You've got to let him go, sir…

  • Already ordered Maverick 2 days ago, but still clicked on this. Was worth it for the description, lol.

And for the record, never done the double high five, ever. And left school in 1975 so it couldnt have happened there anyway.

As someone who has avoided seeing this due to:
    - Formulaic plot
    - No nostalgia for the original
    - A yucky feeling about its synergy with army propaganda

Why do you think it's a masterpiece or worth watching?

I'm genuinely curious, but not sold

    • Watch it for yourself and how about you tell us why you think it’s no good?

      • That's the dilemma, isn't it?
Sunk cost and all of that. There are many films I haven't seen and having a finite amount of time to watch them means I have to pick some over others.

I've already established the general feeling I personally have prior to watching, but I am genuinely curious if anyone can at least provide some insight contrary to these takes.

I don’t think you should watch it. You don’t strike me as someone who feels the need…

The critics and rapturous public reception are probably wrong.

      • Popular ≠ universally loved/"objectively good"

In that sense I doubt you'd find enjoyment in something like Drive My Car which I found to be a masterpiece

But it seems somewhat telling that instead of giving me reasons, you guys are just telling me I'm wrong?

        • I didn’t say you were wrong.

I agreed you probably wouldn’t enjoy it.

Who are these guys you are talking about who are supposedly telling you that you are wrong? If it’s just those pesky Academy members who are making you feel insecure, just ignore them…

          • @UncleRico: Your sarcasm is boring

            • @Ninternet: Well, like you've already alluded, it's subjective 😅😘

              • @thebargainhunter: Yes, that's why I'm looking for the subjective parts people enjoyed from it.

                Why can no-one share that?

                • @Ninternet: While there is plenty of well-placed homage to the first film, for me it's the strong characters, including a beautifully crafted and inclusive minor role for ice-man (voiced by his real-life son), compelling writing, and excellent direction, rather than formulaic presentations or straight mimicry.
Steven Spielberg said Maverick, well specifically Tom Cruise, "saved Hollywood's ass", but if films like the wonderful "Drive My Car" or other slow-paced dramas like "Ida" are what you look for in movies, Mav is not for you.

@thebargainhunter: See, that's what I was looking for.

Strong characters is still always a plus for me. Makes me more intrigued to watch it now
