Price war! More of this as it has been too pricey for international trips to Japan

    • March next year the best I can find that isn't Malaysia Airlines is $1800 return from Perth, is that the best I'll get?

      • +10

It's not Japanese or Australian peak seasons, so I think you'll just have to wait. Sometimes it doesn't work out to book ahead as the airline software on yield management hasn't been triggered yet.

Plus remember Qantas only just added 2 extra daily flights to Narita, so give it a couple of weeks/months and you might get a sale.

The reason for China Southern discounting is they probably have added heaps of flights recently with covid zero ending and if you look at all the flights above, they are basically in the next 3 months, so their yield management software is probably going these flights are too empty.

      • I doubt this. I did Japan return this April $3,000 for a family of four from Perth (about $750 return per person) via Philippine Airlines. Late March to early May is the peak season for Japan (Sakura etc), I think that's a very reasonable deal. People complain about transfer through Manila but we never had any dramas, everything went smoothly for us. Airline itself is great (it's 4 star rated - note that Qantas is also 4 star rated airline). Manila airport isn't the best in terms of customer service but our experience in Haneda was worse so I can't really complain about Manila airport in that regard.

        • It is about 7600 total for all 4 of us through Singapore Airlines. That's on there 13hr duration flights

          • +2

@specwarop: In our case, the flight duration was 15 hours including 3 hr layover in Manila. If I were you, I'd be debating the below,

            1) $7600 vs $3,000 (Singapore airlines 5 star vs Philippine airlines 4 star - I've flown in both and honestly I didn't notice any difference, and I would happily spend that $4,600 extra on something enjoyable in Japan - but each to their own)

            2) Changi Airport (lots happening, clean & modern) vs Manila Airport (boring, no frills & rude staff)

            3) Transit time (actual transit time in Manila was 15 minutes because it was such a small airport, Changi is much larger so lot of mucking around I'd say)

Another thing is, our flight landed in Haneda (which is closer to Tokyo and made our lives much easier) but arrival was just after midnight and we had to wait a couple of hours in queues (which was the worst part of the whole journey).

            • @npnp: The cheapest Philippines Airlines flight is $5600 all up, with a 2 stop 41hr duration on the return leg

              • @specwarop: That sucks..🤔

                • @npnp: I can now see that Japan Airlines have ideal flights (via Haneda) for $6760….tempted to pull the trigger right now…

The times/duration aren't as perfect as the ANA scheduled flights (via Narita though)…but who knows when theyll be available to purchase and what the cost will be…

        • I am always concerned going via Manila given negative reviews around traffic and customer service. Glad it went smoothly for you.

Did a trip there in 2019 with Qantas and it was quite ok. However the onward trip to HK with Cebu was 2 hr late.

      • You can potentially get a bit lower than 1800 but you are going at one of the biggest peaks for travel to Japan. Late March / April in Japan was insane this year. 4hr + at immigration.

        • 4hr thats pretty insane, what time of day was that and which airport?
Japan Airlines I can find for $1670/adult

          • @specwarop: Late Arvo to evening. I arrived 6am and 0 people in line. My brother arrived at 19:00 and only got out of Narita at 22:48 (just enough time to collect his luggage go through customs and catch the last train out.

But I've seen pictures of both Tokyo airports getting smashed in early evening.

  • That's cheap! Unfortunately not kid friendly…

    • Why not?

      • +3

Waiting around 15 hrs at an airport is a great experience for kids isn't it?

        • +8

          Leave the airport

          • +2

@belongsinforums: If they let you. We had a twelve-hour stopover and were assured by China Southern that they would arrange a temporary visa for us to at least go downtown. The flight got in half hour late, and then the airline told us to just go to Customs and tell them what we wanted. We were turned down flat. "You wouldn't have time to see anything," we were told, very abruptly. So we sat in the airport for eleven hours. Not a great start to the holiday!

            • @AlanJ: That sucks! I've been overnight in gz but maybe it was slightly longer. Also I had a visa. And it's true, there was nothing to see. Plenty to eat though

              • -1

@belongsinforums: I chuckled at your "nothing to see" comment…. we had done our homework and had found that, indeed, there wasn't a single sight within public transport of the airport that could be termed a "must-see", so we weren't exactly heart-broken. I guess it was the principle that annoyed us… China Southern assured us that it could assist here, and then summarily abandoned us. It was the first of several unpleasant experiences with China Southern….the flight from Sydney had been otherwise uneventful, but the next leg, from GZ, was something else again!

Good price on airfare but accommodation pricing is getting ridiculous in Japan at the moment, airbnb might be a better bet but the overall cost to Japan has gone up heaps.

    • Airbnb wasn't much better when I looked….

It feels/seems that a lot of hotel providers also aren't releasing availablity for next year yet….

      • +2

Many hotels in Japan don't accept online reservations until 3-6 months of the dates of travel.

        • Why is that? It means I am booking places now and then might cancel a bunch when the rest open closer to my travel dates.

          • +1

            @specwarop: Its just japan things

            • @Jofzar: Not really, there are lot of places in the world that have limits on how far into the future you can book. It helps minimise risk against changing prices (high demand due to something).

              • @BadAtNames: Maybe thats what ANA Airlines are doing with there flights direct to Perth also. Still scheduled but not bookable yet even for October.

    • +5

      Just go to internet cafe.

      • +2

I did this recently and had a very good sleep in the cubical room. Plus the free curry downstairs made this an excellent deal.

        • +1

          free curry ooo

    • +10

Airbnb still suck, 3 star hotels are cheaper.

No idea what you are talking about, I'm still seeing nice hotels for around $100 a night.

      • +1

2nded! I booked hotels with 4.5+ stars on google for roughly $110-$120/night.

Both had modern facilities and were 5 minutes of walking away from the nearest train station.

Keep in mind that I booked 5 months in advance for a trip in October.

      • yeah I just got back from japan found the hotels to be reasonable around $80 to $100 night for a APA through Agoda though it does depends on your search setting, if you are searching as accommodation for 2, then tis more expensive then accommodation for 1

    • Cocoshuka Akasuka, All day Shibuya are some great brand new & affordable accomodations. All under $130 p/n. Cocoshuka was a double bedroom and the size of the room was of an apartment. Very spacious.

I didn't notice the cost of expenses increase whilst my trip in late-March this year. I spent under my budget (4,000$ aud) whilst spending without any considerations.

      • Just priced up All Day Shibuya for March next year, would be $2800 for 5 nights for the Quad Room….

Cocoshuka doesnt appear to be open for bookings yet.

        • I used booking.com to help reduce costs.

    • Hotel deals come and go. I've booked some crazy cheap (for the area) deals even 2 months out. I think I booked Sendai for $60 a night for 2 people in a newly constructed hotel that is about 20sqm in the downtown area. Tokyo I averaged about $120 a night for 2 people earlier this year.

Also you sometimes just need to look outside the Yamanote if you're in Tokyo. I personally stayed at Ningyocho for my last business trip. Lots of small restaurants and the Toei Asakusa line is direct to both Haneda AND Narita. (just takes a little longer than the expresses). 3 (4 if you walk 10 minutes) metro lines on the stop gets me more or less anywhere in Tokyo.

You need to have the right expectations though as this won't be a huge fancy Hilton room. These 3-3.5 Star hotels have enough room to open your suitcases a small sofa and TV and a double bed. But for the purposes of sleeping, its more than servicable.

  • +10

    China Southern though….

  • +7

    bring it back to Adelaide!

  • +1

Is there anything preventing me from getting off at Guangzhou and not traveling to Tokyo?

    • +1

Want to know this too, but think an issue is that your luggage might be loaded on to the flight to japan directly so might not work if you bring luggage.

      • +11

Yes it will work but you can’t travel with baggage and if you have a return flight with that airline they will automatically cancel that return flight as well.

They will also cancel your membership to any loyalty program you might have with the airline.

Just also make sure you have the right visas/passport and meet all the entry requirements as well for China

So if you have no check in baggage and have a return flight with another airline and don’t have loyalty membership then you’re good to go. But don’t do it too often with the same airline (1-2 times max) otherwise you’ll get flagged in the system and you might have a hard time booking tickets to anywhere with that airline in future

  • +13

How are these fares to Japan via Guangzhou so low yet return flights direct to Guangzhou are ridiculously expensive? China Southern ripping off their own people.

    • I reckon.

    • +2

Probably just simple old supply and demand.

    • Hand luggage only then do a runner

  • +4

    15 hour layover in Guangzhou…

    • +4

Enough for dinner and a short sleep

    • +1

Book a room at the airport, buy drinks & food. Ends up costing more than budgeting with a cheaper airline. Uh oh.

    • -3

What if you've been very critical of China / CCP online…

Aussie - China relations aren't as bad as US / Canada / Japan / South Korea - China relations… right? Those others have had arbitrary citizens being conveniently detained whenever they had spats with China.

Actually, we've got our own journalist locked up there. She was critical of China. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/3/31/australia-says-deep…

      Would we risk being detained?

      • +1

You have no risk if you did not add your real name to your online accounts, or use emails linked to your real name.
        Just practice safe opsec

        • -1

and if you did use your real name… which is difficult to avoid these days, with work-related emails on your personal account (job applications even)… I think there's a risk.

Not sure why I'm being downvoted…? Is it wrong to be somewhat 'paranoid' in this situation when there are precedents of this happening in China, including our journalist (who can't get help from our government).

          • @ram4ram: ozbargain has CCP ownership, like Reddit now (anything neg CCP gets removed)

      • -1

        ok bro

        • -1

          Appreciate you listening mate

  • Good prices but this is the worst time to go to Japan

  • +1

    Why no BNE?

Flight from BNE - SYD will add the fare up by another $200

  • anyway to know if the flights having meal included?

    • +1

Yes, included but don’t expect too much

      • +1

Thanks! But for both of the flights? How can I look up for that info tho?

        • +2

Under the FAQ section on their official website, it stated

8.Can I buy food and beverage on plane?
We offer free catering on plane. Due to reasons such as weight restriction, our catering amount is limited.

          • +2

@bird380: That just means you get your standard meal service (ie hot meal, salad, bread roll, dessert and drink) and if you want another hot meal you just have to check if any leftover. They usually have a snack bar in the galley mid flight.

The reason they might have this on their FAQs was there have probably been one or two pax in the past, eating up a storm.

  • +1

looks cheap but when you want to purchase it sends you to pages like mytrip, gotogate, kiwi, budgetair which have very bad reviews :/

    • I think they are an aggregator. I have used kiwi for same day travel (tickets were purchased just 4 hours before flight) and there were no issues.

  • +1

Hopefully they will have some deals for December or January

  • Tempted! Do we need to get China visa in case the luggage need to be collected in between and not automatically transferred :/

    • +7

I am pretty much sure that the China transit visa has resumed. If you hold an eligible passport, you will be granted a 144-hour short stay.

  • +2

    Pricing, good.
    Length (~1 month), bad.
    (But beggers cant be choosers)

  • +9

I have flown with a China southern and they were great. They used to provide free transfer and overnight hotel with long layovers

    • +3

Unfortunately, they now only provide biz and economy passengers with status with this perk.

  • anyone want to be homeless beggar with me in japan?

  • -1

What are you going to tell your employers?

GOing on holiday for a month…???

  • +2

Fantastic, thanks for posting the deal!
Booked for just over two weeks return for 2 adults and 2 children return for $2K- amazing!

    • Wow insane deal!

  • +1

Cheap as chip. I think the booking system is change. Before if you book your tickets more than half year
earlyier in advance, you might get lowest price. I check the tickets of next January. Some of the date is more than $2xxx. Nowday It is best to book your ticket only within 1 month.

  • +1

is China Southern any good in terms of safety?

  • -1

Can you stop over in Guangzhou ? like 2~3 days ? Ofcourse I will need the China visa.

    • +1

denpends on your nationality. most of countries allow 144 hours visa free for transiting in Guangzhou

      • Australian Passport.

      • Also, how do you modify accordingly from the website?

        • Most likely will need TA to do this unless you can get multi city stops to work.

  • Travelling with kids. With the 14 hr layover is there a good transit hotel to stay at in Ghuangzhou?

  • -1

    Who is everyone booking with?

  • Just FYI, transit travellers can pass the immigration check and stay in China for up to 144 hours (6 days), visa not required.

  • 2022 crash? Is that why prices are low for China southern ?

  • Shit. Organised flights via Singapore Airlines just before this deal. Ended up spending $1400 pp 😭
