I normally make these from scratch, but when you cbf, these are by far the next best thing available in Australia.

Prices have been lower, but even at $3.50 it's around the same price at the Asian stores near me, so the Rendang is a buck cheaper.

    Share your recipe to make them from scratch!

      How much time do you have? Its only worth it if you have a massive wok and burner to make big batches to freeze. I haven't done eother for over a year. The last thing I made was sambal sauce for fried chicken nasi lemak from scratch and that's juggling 10 things at the same time for a few hours.

    The rendang pouches rock. I'm pretty decent in the kitchen but IMO the time and energy it takes to make a rendang from scratch and let it develop its flavours are trumped by the ease and convenience of the pouch for a very similar result.

    Yes, from scratch will always taste better but the pouches are really not far behind at all, and are wayyyyyy more accessible.

      And the list of ingredients is very long, especially the aromatics. I buy that stuff in bulk becasue I use them for other things, and my parents grow lemongrass and chilli.

      Like I have a kilo of cinnamon sticks and star anise. Also cloves and cardamom because I also like Indian currys. Cinnamon and star anise can also be used for SE Asian recipe. Then you have to buy galangal and tamarind, which is also used in Thai cuisine.

      So if you don't have all this shit—and I've only mentioned about half of the ingredients—it's 100% more economical to get these pouches, and you can bang it out in under an hour in a pressure cooker.

      I thought they were just right. Not too spicy, not too mild. Would've preferred a heatier kick.

        Yeah, these are hot, but still enjoyable and have flavour. When stuff gets so hot that you can't even taste anything, what's the point?

          Yeah I know what you mean and accept that Teans have to make the spice level acceptble to a majority of their customers. Not just spice addicts.

          • @t25: Exactly, you can always add some fresh hot chili (or chili sauce) if you want to up the heat a bit.

        Haha. Do you really believe the arguments in this article? It's as good and as bad as any other on this topic.

        It might surprise you but my close relative has a bad reaction if she eats any food with MSG.
        For instance, she didn't understand why she had this reaction most of the time when she ate Thai food (which she loves). So she started looking at the ingredients, compare and experiment.
        It appeared, for instance, that if she ate Thai food which contained MSG, then she had a bad reaction. However she has found out that if she eats Thai food cooked without MSG containing ingredients, she would be fine. But it's not easy to find curry paste and some other ingredients for Thai food without MSG nowadays.

    • MSG is just salt.

  • The beef rendang one is a winner (tone it to half a packet if your spice tolerance is low).
