Do You Use Branded Air Purifier Filters Or Generic Brand?

My fellow cheapscapes,

The Xiaomi/Mi Air Purifier HEPA filters range from $80-$90 each. Non-branded ones cost $30-$40.

I obviously want to save money so I'm open to trying the non-branded. However, Mi recommends that you only use use their brand. Is this a marketing ploy or are the generic branded ones trash and/or non-compatible?

Anyone have any insights to share on their use of branded vs non-branded HEPA air filters?

  • Don't they have an RFID chip in them so you can't use generic?

I should have a deal on genuine Xiaomi air filters in a week or 2 ;)

  • I use non branded but they don't have an rfid chip so you have to do some magic to reset the filter life back to 100%. There are instructions on Reddit, I can't remember each step. Takes about 2-3 minutes. I am not completely sold on the quality of the cheap ones though…

Also, you can reset the original back to 100% if you want to squeeze more life out of it. Mine looked perfect when I took it out after 6 months and I just vacuumed it and put it back in for another 6 months.

    • Thanks for the tip! I'll check Reddit and report back

  • None. I breath chunky air, though I am thinking of getting a filter.

Don't fall into the media trap/hype that house plants can help filter indoor air effectively. It is all a big furphy.

  • Have you tried cleaning the filter? Blow it out with air/vacuum, wash in soapy water and dry.

    • Does that work? Have you tried it?

      • Works for any other filter. Why not these?

  • I spoke too soon. Back in stock now.
