Anybody Get a Letter That Their Electricity Price Is Increasing 30%?

Alinta sent a nice little letter this week that their peak rate is increasing 30%. No justification or reasoning, just going up 30% while the feed in tariff stays the same. Also noticed that my car insurance has jumped from the regular 6% yearly increases to over 20% increase this year. With the cost of food and now interest rates increasing considerably, how are people expected to survive when wages are not rising anywhere near the same rate?

Comments

    • If you are on ToU plan with solar, don’t be surprised if your yearly bills increase more than 60%. They have increased off peak prices by 80%. Based on notice I received, the off peak rate are rising from 0.166 to 0.2866. That’s outrageous.
Since peak period, you can still manage by solar so they want every cent out of your off peak usage.
I will 100% change the supplier after assessing the new prices on 1-July. Other providers aren’t publishing their new prices yet which is more strange. The entire industry in colluding.

Shame AGL arent making any money

    • Hey ozbargainers, Energy Locals seems to offer good rates atm. On the side note, Could someone please send referral so we both get $50. Thanks in advance.

    • +3

Theres a lot of prices going up due to rising cost of doing business but a lot of these costs dont seem to match up.

If a item needs to go up in price by say 80 cents the retail store may try a dollar instead.

A mate that works in a middle management role at a large vege farm says they are under huge pressures from the supermarket they deal directly with to keep the price down but the supermarkets profit margin off these items is getting larger and larger.

Now a supermarket can do what they like they are a private business but they shouldnt blame all the price rise on the supply chain.

The cost increase coming out of the energy industries feel they may be cashing in also while they have the chance.

    • I also have a similar solar system but this isn't sustainable. Our income doesn't increase at the same rate. Time to look for cheaper alternative.

Merged from Powershop Electricity Rate Going up from 1 July 2023

I just received an email from Powershop that the electricity rate is going up nearly 25-30% from July 2023.
I recently moved from AGL to Powershop, simply due to the fact that it has the best solar tariff currently in NSW (13c/kw).
From July, the solar tariff will be reduced to 12c.

I am wondering why and how this steep price jack up is happening in the middle of winter and how others will cope financially already impacted from mortgage, grocery bill, insurance premiums and every thing.

Are we really heading to a recession like NZ?
Now I start to feel worried not necessarily about me, but about all Aussie battler.

    • +5

Perhaps have a read of one of the 38 other "electricity prices are going up" threads.

    • -7

Wholesale prices increased in recent months almost entirely as a result of sanctions imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. It led to a global shortage of natural gas. This was exacerbated when Russia withdrew gas supplies from the European market.
Even though the energy shocks were happening half a world away from Australia, it affected domestic gas prices

Basically, we are all getting stuffed so the military industrial complex could make a quick buck and help governments launder more tax dollars to arguably the most corrupt country in the world.

Meanwhile the average Joe Schmo believes the garbage that’s feed to him/her and puts 🇺🇦 on all of his socials.
      Absolute lunacy 🤣🤣

Do you always talk in sound bytes or is it just something that I get the honour to tolerate lol.

      • What a load of shit. My price increase email read:

"There have been major global energy challenges over the last year, and we’ve seen significant rises in wholesale energy costs in Australia."

Meanwhile coal costs less than half of what it did last year and solar energy is getting cheaper and cheaper to produce.

    • I am wondering why and how this steep price jack up is happening in the middle of winter

Do you read the news. Every media outlet has been telling us this for the past few months. 25% Min for NSW other states a little higher or a little lower but all within that 25% area. Its either Ukraine, or renewables, thats caused it. (depends on who you believe)

Unless the only news you get is the local members spin sheet

      • -1

Reading the news and actually got impacted by it personally was different. Feel for everyone.

      • +3

The price of wind and sunshine has soared recently.
Just like coal and gas. So surely it is the renewables causing price rises!

        • Interesting thoughts, that prompted me to look more carefully at these commodity rises, so I can see what effects really are.

          Amazing.

Those damn coal price rises upping our electricity. See it all here. (Just rotate your monitor for best effect)

          https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/coal

Not as bad for Natural gas

          https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/natural-gas

While you're there, look down the list below the chart and see the one energy item that has seen an increase. The one we dont use.

So as you say, it's gotta be the renewables. That being the capital costs of installing the infastructure to benefit from the "free" energy.

Simple economics many forget. Capital (or similar upfront costs). Like bargain hunting. Travelling cross town to save a buck aint no bargain (unless you have govt subsidised free travel)

          • +1

@RockyRaccoon: As you we'll know, the pricing is set ahead of time and regulated. Expand the scale even slightly and you see the biggest price increases in coal and gas for a decade.

Is it your contention that because these prices have now dropped somewhat the operators didn't enter into supply arrangements at the previous price?

I guess you only rent your house and car because capital investment for ongoing savings is not simple economics.

            • @mskeggs: Ah yes, if you are right, then we should expect a price drop next year? I doubt it.

Kid yourself that its the Gas price, when most of our generation used to be coal. But hey, they decommissioned the cheap coal and went to Gas because renewables NET cost is much higher.

Why. So we can lead the world to moving towards renewables. But did anyone look behind, the rest of the world isn't there. The Pied Piper hasn't got any rats following, they are just too smart.

We deal with China on what we call a rational basis, and they deal back with the same rationality. What suits them and to hell with Australia, why Australia cant even built a simple Frigate.

So who are we kidding that we can "lead" the world. We are a joke and they are the ones laughing all the way to the bank. Most of the energy providers here coincidentally have large Chinese investment. Guess where your power provided, profits are distributed.

Merged from PowerShop Increase in Electricity Bill from 1 July

Just received an email from PowerShop that the electricity price will be increasing and Solar FIT will decrease from 1 July. This is nearly 30% increase.

Is there any better provider in NSW?

Apparently each customer of a power or gas utility will be individually posting here.

    Just like changing ISPs

  • 24c increased to 36c Alinta Brisbane

    • That pricing is a damn rip. Change provider. Compare against Nectr.

  • Are there any comparison sites that take into account the new prices from July 1?

    • +1

I just used the energymadeeasy govt site - most rates up now seem to be post 01JUL but some aren't. If you go to the retailers site you can sometimes get better info - generally its easy to spot the old rates as they're so much lower.

FWIW I found Nectr also had the best rates for me and they specified they were 'locked' for 12mths - so made them more attractive.

  • Merged from Electricity - AGL Going up - New Deals?

AGL sent me an email saying that they are going raise the eletricity costs by 33%. (from 29c to 40c including GST).
Now that seems outrageous cost but I know it ain't cheap anywhere else but I am looking for opinions and knowledge, to see if and what is the best deal around town.

Here's what I found so far:
    Red Energy - QANTAS Partner.
10.000 Bonus points when joining. 2 points per $1 spent and peak rates are 34 with should 30 and off peak 22.
    Supply charge 163 a day.

AGL is 190 charge and flat 40.

Energy Local: (Prices from 01 July 2023)
Membership fee of $16.50 a month.
All day flat 37. Supply charge 155.

Alinta Energy seems that it was a good deal before but I cannot see their updated prices. They do allow AMEX payments and that can be a + (Qantas points again).

Let me know what you think, what you discovered and let's talk about watts together!

AGL sent me an email saying that they are going raise the eletricity costs by 33%.

Must be all those secret alien bases sucking up all our power …

        • Nah. The aliens already have fusion technology. The problem is that they demand an outrageous feed-in tariff

      • Agl 40% for me. Waiting for 1st July to look around.

        • Agl didn't say how many % but off peak increase double , other rate increase 50%, some incresse of daily charge and demard charges , so estimate is around 70% increase

    • Whom is your distributor? Only worth comparing across comparable households.

    • +6

AGL posts record profits - proceeds to increase margins.

      Love it.

      • +1

Actually, the government is artificially capping their margins

        • +3

How good is a self regulating free market!

    • +1

Gather your past electricity bills if you can, or just make a guess about your past usage - preferably over the last 12 months. Then go to https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au

      • +6

Trust the government to turn a simple concept into something obtuse and unintelligible

        • +2

          It doesn't even work properly.
Even giving it 12+ months of data, it still only helps to narrow down the selection. Their recommended cheapest isn't actually the cheapest when you plug in the numbers.
But it's a good start to get a shortlist and the numbers I need to plug into my spreadsheet.

    • +2

I'm in SE QLD and just locked into fixed rates with Nectr, for 12 months.
They were by far, my best option.

      • +1

Same for Sydney (use an ozb referral for $50)
        No similar options for gas

      • +1

        did the same. much better!

    • +1

AGL sent me an email saying that they are going raise the eletricity costs by 33%

And next month the RBA will increase the rates again because of shit like this but won't blame these assholes, they'll still continue to blame works for not taking pay cuts!

      • I’m inclined to believe that AGL employees are overpaid

    • +1

I had read that the comparison sites haven't been updated with the rates from 1 July.
So be mindful you might be comparing a current rate vs AGLs future rate when looking to change

      • This 100% . Not one provider updated rates . They all using old rates to get you in thinking you got a deal . Make sure you check carefully with new rates that will start on July 1 .

    • If you move to a different supplier prior to 1st of July, wont you get the 12 months (benefit period) at the old, advertised price online?

      • +2

        depends on the fine print

    • I've been with Alinta for a few years, and there prices have increased a few times over that period, but nothing too drastic. Got their new prices for my plan via email today, and for me it's a 50% increase, effective the 1st July. They also note in their email that new plans and pricing will be available on that date, so check back in… haha, i'm already shopping around.

      • Got my email yesterday from Alinta, a 51% increase!
And they happily told me they'll be "8% above the reference price".

The real sucky bit is that none of them are publicly releasing their July 1 prices, so you can't even shop around until July 1 after you've started paying over-inflated prices!

I was on a sweet grandfathered deal with AGL until the start of the year too, prices will have doubled for me over the course of 6 months!

    • -4

The electricity prices are going up by 30% (on top of 20% last year) to pay for the cost of all the new renewables installation.
But they say renewables are cheaper. Go figure…

      • -1

pay for the cost of all the new renewables installation

That is not what the energy providers are saying. They said wholesale energy prices ie gas / coal. My solar panels haven't gone up in price like used cars.

        • Price increases have nothing to do with people's solar panels. More to do with building all new huge solar farms and wind turbines farms. All in areas not currently served by high voltage powerlines. So not only the cost of thousands of panels for the solar farms and the huge cost for enormous wind turbines (all imported from overseas by the way). But also the huge cost of constructing new powerlines. 10,000km of them according to Origin's CEO.
Also they are closing down (or running into the ground by not carrying out planned mainenance) very efficient and cheap coal generators before all the expensive renewables infrastracture is in place.
This creates power shortages and cost increases that are passed on to the consumer.
To top it all off some people are making a lot of money out of this change. Also paid by the consumer through increased prices.

          • +1

@Mad Max: Obviously the powers don’t want you putting in domestic solar or batteries.

How else they going to charge you for wires you don’t need over long distances.

But people will have to believe otherwise.

            • -1

@netjock: If enough people start going off grid with solar and batteries the goverments will likely start some sort of solar power tax.
See what's happening with electric cars. They don't get the excise on fuel any more so they put a road tax instead!

              • -1

@Mad Max: You don’t know what off grid means

If you drive your EV on private property only you don’t need to pay rego and road tax

You are just imagining stuff now

                • -1

@netjock: So who would buy a EV to use on private property? Farmers??? You have no idea what you are talking about.
Off grid means your house is no longer connected to the power grid. So you don't pay anything to anyone for power. They will find another way to support the infrastrucure, with some sort of tax on solar.
They have already done it for EVs. Look at the Victoria road tax for EVs.

                  • -1

                    @Mad Max:

Like what? A reverse carbon tax?

If you parked a car in your drive way. It does not go on the road. It isn't registered. You don't put fuel in it. You might have paid GST on purchase. How are they going to tax it? Sunlight tax?

You need to get serious and understand what you are talking about.

EV road tax rightly or wrongly someone needs to pay for the roads. If you don't pay road tax (or other people pay for it through fuel tax) there will be indirect taxes.

Stop dreaming and start working on a credible plan.

End of transmission. No time for fools.

    • Wait until 1st July when everyone has revealed their new prices.

      • Most suppliers have already posted their 01 July prices. For those who have been able to get onto the Nectr fixed rate deal, it reduces some risk for some people.

  • Just received an update from Origin (VIC):

    Daily supply 84.96 c/day -> no change on 1July
    General usage 18.40 c/kWh -> no change on 1July
    Solar feed-in tariff 5.20 c/kWh -> changed to 4.90c on 1July

  • In good news (SE QLD), I just received email from Energy Australia that they are raising FiT for first 15kw from 10c per KW to 15 per KW from July 1. Seems they are trying to compete with AGL.

Solar rates before 1 July 2023
10c/kWh excl. GST up to 15 kWh export*
6.6c/kWh excl. GST after 15 kWh export – Block 2*

Solar rates from 1 July 2023
15c/kWh excl. GST up to 15 kWh export – Block 1*
6.6c/kWh excl. GST after 15 kWh export – Block 2*

Trying to gain clarification on other rate changes due July 1 though before switching back from AGL. Will stick around to get my AGL joining credit at least.

Anybody from SE QLD still with Energy Australia and able to advise if a notice has been sent out and what the rates were? Would really appreciate :)

  • +1

Im in an Essential Energy area and nearly all our rates went up 40-50%….so not great.

That said a curious thing I found was that being we had a Smart Meter and try very hard to leave high power tasks till offpeak etc - I compared our last 3 quarters of bills for Time of Use vs Flat Rates - to see what would have been cheaper.

Amazingly all three bills were within $1 of each other! Which I found gobsmacking given our efforts to make the most of the TOU discounts. As such I've changed to a flat rate tarrif as there's zero benefit for our efforts, clearly power companies are taking the piss ensuring they get their same billings regardless of the efforts one puts in to consume during offpeak times etc.

As the title suggests, price increases to electricity supply will occur on July 1 as we all know. However today there are various potential deals considering the end of financial year approaching.
