    Ooh.. HomePod is back!

  • +6

Upon checking the model number, it seems it is Gen1, which has been sold for $299 for a few months before it was discontinued.

    • +5

After it was discontinued, the price of Gen1 Homepod rocked up. The second hand still cost around 400

      • Why? Gen 2 is $479 rrp

        • +4

          Gen1 has more bass :)

    • +1

More likely DJ just haven't updated their site as a new Gen 1 would surely be very difficult to come by, through retail channels at least.

    Any deals on gen2?

    • +2

Picked one up for $387 from eBay Allphones store (part of 22% off sale)

  • I thought David Jones stoped selling apple stuff, good to see they still sell them good prices.

      That's Myer

It’s hard to believe that DJs would still have Gen 1s laying around, but if its a different listing for the Gen 2s then it’s possible

    • +2

I'm staggered they still have them but the price should be way lower.

  • +3

Probably worth the title being modified to clarify it's the first gen HomePod.

Some reviews say gen 1 still sounds better than gen 2.

  • +2

I used Gen 1 HomePods for a few years, then sold them and now use Gen 2.

This is a tricky one because obviously Gen 1 has a very old chip and soon enough it will stop receiving software updates. Yes, I know it is speaker but it is connected to the internet so still should be updated for security.

On the other hand, I Gen 1 had more microphones and was better at picking up my voice commands (setting how stupid Siri aside for a moment). Also, I hate the new top panel where you don't see volume controls anymore while music is playing.

  • ill pass just because how stupid siri is

"I didn't quite get that, could you repeat your question?"

"You are asking the time in Azerbaijan, is that correct?"

    • I’m an Apple fan, with a lot of their devices, but man is HomePod frustrating. Sometimes my wife and I will ask her to play music and she’ll just not, without explaining why. Drives us nuts, and has resulted in my wife just airplaying stuff from her phone.

Definitely a big drag on what is an otherwise pretty excellent speaker.

  • Does it play from Spotify and YouTube music?

    • +1

You can make them by controlling it from your phone, but if you simply say "Hey Siri, play ……." it is better to use Apple Music. Apple music for voice command only is $6 a month.

      • Yeah but I already have YouTube music thanks to YouTube premium

        • I will work, but I don't think you can do it via voice command. You'll have to fire it up on your phone.

  • How do you get access to the AMEX early access?
Is it all card or just David Jones cards?

    • same question

    • +2

Just the David Jones Amex cards today unfortunately, but the way DJ's works usually it will be open to rewards members tomorrow, then everyone else the day after that.

      • I have a David Jones Amex card-

The home pod came in at $397

I don’t see the additional discount.

Where do you go to get that’s??

        • It came up when I logged into my account.
You need to have your card registered in your online DJ's account.
It will now appear today to rewards members

  • I tried, but this item isn't eligible for the 20% extra promotion.

I reached out to the DJ and was informed that only items marked with the "EXTRA 20%" banner are eligible for the promotion.

    • How do you find out what items are eligible for the EXTRA 20%?

      • No straight ways, you just search for the item you are after, if there is an EXTRA 20 banner next to the price.

        • The sale has now opened to 'Rewards' members so you should easily be able to access now.
Only white homepod appears to be left though

          • @mirror: Do you need to be both a 'Rewards' member & DJ AMEX card holder to be eligible for the extra 20% off?

I am just a DJ 'Rewards' member but still not showing the extra 20 off banner. hmmm very strange.

            How do I solve this?

            • @milanoxpress: Sorry i’m not sure why, today was rewards members (Wednesday) and tomorrow it should open up to everybody. You needed to be logged in to your DJ’s online account to be able to access (can’t use guest checkout etc). The pods have now sold and all that is left is the iPad air. It still comes up with the Extra 20% banner for me but only when I’m logged in.

I’m a big Apple fan that has one of these and loves it. But don’t buy it. It’s six years old and will stop getting updates in the near future. There’s better value products out there, Apple might even do one of these with a screen in the next year or two if you’re so desperate to have an Apple speaker

Also I got this in 2020 for $300 brand new. Don’t let yourself pay this much for a six year old outdated product.

    • This is gen 2 bud, you have a gen 1

      • +1

The post literally said gen 1

        • sorry my bad. mind boggling how they could have had gen1 stock
