[QLD] $550 Electricity Credit for Every QLD Household ($1072 for Vulnerable Households) @ Queensland Government

3110

Useful with the price of electricity increasing in July.

Queenslanders will pay less for electricity in 2023–24 through the Cost of Living Rebate, with households receiving one of the following:

  • $700 Cost of Living Rebate on electricity bills for vulnerable households, plus a further $372 under the Queensland Electricity Rebate Scheme, bringing total rebates for Queenslanders doing it toughest to $1,072
  • $550 Cost of Living Rebate on electricity bills for all other Queensland households.

For most households, the rebate will be credited to electricity bills on a quarterly basis commencing from 1 July 2023. Exact timing will depend on retailers’ system requirements and individual billing cycles.

Identify with being over 60 & working less than 35hr/w & its yours!

      • In truth, I think this might give me "free" electricity for a year? I installed Solar and my bill is now about $50/m. I'm a fan of that.

        • I don't have solar, but swap retailers every 2+ months.
I effectively pay nothing for electricity, after taking up Deals here!
This will be my most profitable year💰

  • Does anyone know what the penalty is to immediately leave Nectr?
Unlike most Electricity companies this one does put you on a ongoing contract, and you must notify them a certain amount of days before you plan to leave, but I didn't see what the penalty fee is if you forgot about this contract stuff, and you signed up with someone else

    thanks

    • +1

Has your electricity supply started with Nectr?
There is a 2 week cooling off period in contract.
Contact them - found them helpful.

      • Not with them yet, my main interest would be changing to someone else when there is a better offer, and wondering about how much it would cost me if I forgot to let them know in advance and just 'churned' to the new provider.
It says no exit fees on their website, but there probably should be an asterisk next to that, and it's no exit fee if you give them the notice time they request, but different if you leave immediately. I"ll email them

        • I've changed from Nectr in the past - no penalty. But check your contact or ask them.

  • The Queensland Government knows how to fight inflation. Very clever.

  • Dan, take note. Victorians only got $250.

It's easier with a $12B surplus announced today.
Goodies for many in the budget🎁
      …and an election next year🤔

We're spending a trillion dollars on a variety of tunnela - and they recently dumped the EV subsidy.
Fresh out of cash, so doubt we're ever going to get this much :(

    • I'll take your $250. In NSW many working families get nothing. Only eligible low-income households, pensioners, self-funded retirees, families and carers will receive a one-off $500 bill. Eligible small businesses get $650.

Wish they'd do rebates on battery storage :/

    • If connected to grid - you receive the rebate.
Off grid systems aren't so lucky.

    • Handouts are to increase dependence

Battery storage increases independence, a big no no

I jumped on board this scheme. Ended up with a LG Chem battery that was in a recall list that will be replaced this year and the warranty period will be restarted. Winning!

      • Ah just missed it. Only 4 years too late. 😂 Hope they bring it back again, it's probably more value for money now that standard tariffs have increased a fair bit.

  • What if I live off grid in my house made of hemp?

  • Wholesale energy prices, gas and coal prices have all halved this YTD. Yet power prices have went up 40%. If your provider has used wholesale energy prices or coal prices as a reason for the rise, lodge a complaint with ACCC.

There is an election in QLD in 2024.
People are so pissed off for the appaling state of health and out of control youth crime due to the government mismanagenent.
This money is buying votes for next year.

Surely this doesn't meet the criteria for a deal. It's a government scheme, paid for by taxpayers. And it will only cover one quarter of the cost of my annual electricity bill increase after AGL hiked my rates by 42% the other day.

C’mon. You’ve been a member long enough to know how to check the posting guidelines and neg voting guidelines. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:deal_posting_guidelin…

    • Kind of agree, but not a valid reason for a Neg. Instead Report or just comment.

This Cost of Living Rebate is up from $175 last year (plus over $300 extra as vulnerable households rebate).
      And that wasn't a Deal!

will only cover one quarter of the cost of my annual electricity bill increase after AGL hiked my rates by 42%

Obviously, do your research - to decrease your bills. I effectively pay nothing for electricity, even without solar.

Those with minimal electricity bills will love this $550 announcement. I do💰

      Rebates will be applied automatically.
So not a Deal for almost anyone.
      It's a PSA.

Only cases where this may be useful:

      • Don't think $550 alone would induce people to move to Qld - just to take up this offer🤔

      • Where an application is necessary is to receive the vulnerable households rebate. But only for some.
Best to be done before 1/7 to receive first payments!!
Mainly for those who qualify for a full Qld Seniors Card, but don't have one. It's not automatic, but an easy application.

Qld Seniors Card has many other benefits (free glasses, dental, some off peak transport, etc) for those (working less than 35hr/w) - over 60 on a pension, or those over 65!

Make sure your electricity retailer has your concession details - to receive the increased benefit!! Vital to receive the vulnerable households rebate!!

The Qld Seniors Card is a different process for electricity retailers - processed through Qld Govt site, not Human Services.
They can stuff that up, resulting in higher electricity bills. Took months for one retailer to fix that for relative.

    • I'd start with ditching AGL for a better rate.

  • Should have use the money to fund/speed up energy projects to replace closed coal mine electric generator to permanently balance the supply and demands for electricity.

    Another FAIL policy.

  • Is this actually a deal for obtaining, or more just an announcement?

  • Government giving free money to energy companies again? Are we surprised?

  • Inflation says what?

  • My solar FIT has decreased 75%. Condolences to anyone who recently bought solar panels.

    • I miss the days of 52c FIT.

  • I dont get this? why not just fix the problem then handing us the cash then giving it back to the energy companies?

    • My guess… Electricity Competition agreement. Qld wasn't happy to sign up.
Which means electricity sold to Queenslanders can't be discounted, relative to that Qld electricity sold into to other States.

Qld owns most of the electricity production & network.
So very different to NSW etc.

The Qld Govt gives electricity consumers a credit to their electricity account, not to the retailer. If you leave that business, they have to refund any credit remaining.

      Nothing new!
The Qld Govt has been doing this for years! Have received credit remaining when I've left retailer.

      • Essentially you are still paying the big electricity corp?

What i am saying is how com the gov change the model in the way Electricity Competition is provided

        • big electricity corp?

In Qld - that's the Govt.
There's less difference in rates here between retailers.
In NSW etc, that's private industry - after you sold it & spent the money💰

how com the gov change the model in the way Electricity Competition is provided

Renegotiating an agreement between the Commonwealth & most States & Territory - just because Qld Govt wants to give a discount on electricity it produces… only to Qld electricity consumers…

          Sounds uncompetitive!
Good luck with getting everyone to agree to that🤔

Handing back money is quicker & easier!
And looks better at election time!!

Rather have the money in my account💰
If given as a discount, retailers could easily raise rates to offset the subsidy! The usual issue with subsidies - they often disrupt market prices!!

We used to have discounted petrol too, subsidised by Qld Govt.

          We do things differently🌞

          • @INFIDEL: So the word subsidized sounds like bribing but more in a legal sense

            • @George Washington: Petrol price subsidies were abandoned as retailers could increase the sale price (disguised by normal price cycle). Eventually there was no decrease in price for consumers.

The subsidy was wasted. Better to use it to benefit Queenslanders in other ways. Like a rebate on something most pay bills on - electricity.

A flat rate of electricity rebate is simplest, benefiting those most in need relative more. For vulnerable households - there is a prorata daily rebate off every bill.

        • +1

Because that's not easy, and would probably be undone by the next liberal gov anyway. Qld is part of the National Energy Market and its regulated at the federal level. Changing the model would require it to essentially isolate itself which would not be good for anyone. Look at Texas in USA…

At least in Qld most of the asset are state owned, so Qlders benefit from the profits, and this is the Govs way of giving some of these profits back directly to those who were made worse off.
What it could do is de-privatise retail in Qld, and set the retail tariffs to be paid, but I doubt that would change the outcome to consumers much compared to what they're doing here.

          • @NigelTufnel: Ah okay it now make sense

It just NSW where i live we are the gov subsidize will profit the energy providers margins. Lovely…

  • where are they getting this money from? if they are not increasing taxes to pay for it? is it more debt? or are they just doing what the U.S. does and prints more money out of thin air?

    • +1

They got the money already through profits of state owned energy assets and coal royalties… Instead of keeping it all for something else they're giving it back to Qlders directly.
Think of it like a share dividend. We own the assets, they made a good profit, now we get some of that profit.

    • +1

No! Keep up - already discussed.
Sadly, you're more informed about overseas than your own Qld Govt😜

It's not new! This electricity rebate was $175 last year. Over $200 in 2020. And smaller amounts other years. Plus a vulnerable households rebate.

where are they getting this money from?
increasing taxes to pay for it?
prints more money out of thin air?

      $12B surplus in budget🎉
Mainly from mining royalties now tied to increased world price💰

Some being used to pay down debts.
Some for increased services like free kindy for 4 year olds.
Some for increased funding of hospitals.
And some for increased electricity price relief to over 2M households.

Fed Govt arranged additional rebate for vulnerable households included in this.

  • (profanity) NSW.

  • Need to add another zero at the end of it and that will do.

    Oh it's an energy credit??

HA! Smells like woke Socialism is on the menu in QLD.

    This is inflationary
