  • This plus a cheapy gpu good enough for a little minecraft Java? (6 year old)

    • Same question - does it need a dedicated GPU or can it run it on its own? If not, what GPU would be recommended (no 4090 comments pls).

      • +4

vanilla Minecraft has very low spec requirements. You don't need a graphics card to play but the moment you start tinkering with say, shader mods, the requirements (both CPU and GPU) will increase.

    • Radeon RX 6400 low profile card.
its as fast as a GT1650 but way cheaper.

      • +2

Only the MT and SFF profiles of the 9020 support discrete graphics cards. The USFF only has 1 miniPCIe connector.

        • thought this was the SFF

    • +1

You cannot fit a gaming gpu in Ultra Small Form Factor pc unfortunately.

    • Problem is the low profile graphics card. What would you pair with it?

  • How would something like this go for running a home Plex server? Is it worth spending a little more for significant benefit? I won't need to transcode

    • I won't need to transcode

Should be enough, I have around the same.

    • I reckon i5-4570 may be fine even for transcoding one 4K stream.

However, obviously this thing won’t house much storage, so you’ll need something else with disks in it. Maybe just add to the budget for that server and stream from there?

Without transcode, this will be massively overkill for a Plex server. (I use a much less powerful machine.)

Make sure to include an SSD in your budget

The CPU is 10 years old now, I be looking to spend slightly more for something a bit newer

    • What is "slightly more"?
To get something that is noticeably faster (aside from adding an SSD, good advice), you'll be needing 8th gen, which will cost four times as much in USFF.
So there are definitely many suitable roles for this. Still works well for general PC use - web, office stuff.

Personally, I wouldn't trust something 10 years old, the speed will be fine and the price point is unbeatable

  • Great for Windows XP Retro gaming, but for modern stuff they are getting a bit old unless you are only doing basic tasks.

    • Upgrade it to SSD, more than enough for most office works.

  • I have one of these (mine's a 9020M) with an SSD and USB3 external hard drives. Serves as a NAS, torrent client, pihole, etc. I even have those running inside VirtualBox, so there's some headroom if you're not doing CPU intensive work.

    • how many 3.5" drives can fit inside the case?

      • +1

From memory, zero. It takes 1x 2.5", I think.

        • …thats not many at all…

          • +1

@franco cozzo: This is the USFF model. Look for an SFF machine, they'll have at least one 3.5" bay, and space to duct tape a 2.5" SSD to something if absolute worst comes to worst. Could look for a model with a CD drive, and then buy a cheapy 5.25" to 3.25" adapter. That'll net you two 3.5" drives.
