From a quick look, the video is outdated. You can no longer buy items from China for $1 delivered. They do have to pay for postage now, as well as GST.
I know when I buy small electronic parts that are not easily available here, I now make effort to buy a bunch of things at once, to combine postage.

The Dollar refers to the fact that the World Trade organisation basically subsidizes Chinese good shipping so it only cost the manfacturer a pittance to send goods overseas. For example it was revealed recently that sending a letter within the US was more expensive than sending a multi kilo parcel from china to the USA.

The fact is China is the manufacturing plant of the world. There are too much dealers and manufacturers in China. There are also good and bad manufacturers. The thing is you need to do your due diligence if you are dealing with them. Heard too many stories from my clients who are wholesalers in Singapore.
As much as possible, we still prefer to support local produce.
Yes exactly this, people can order products of any quality. Things like DC converters they sell are good, but could be massively better with 50 cents more in parts (See a recent Great Scott video).
Companies can order top quality products, example Apple and iPhone components, or poor quality products. Any quality issues is really a problem with the importer.
They cost 5 cents if you buy them from China. Search LCSC.com for C45783 (22uF 25V ceramic capacitor, samsung brand, US$0.0247) and C2798196 (1uF 50V ceramic capacitor, samsung brand, US$0.0089). I've ordered from this company more than 5 times without any issues with fake components. But considering that almost all electronic products are made internationally anyway it's totally acceptable to buy from a Chinese distributor when the price is so much cheaper compared to other places.

Say, we stopped buying directly from China on individual level, so all the Chinese made products are imported through proper channels, and then Australian retailers send those to us via AusPost or other means. So in theory AusPost does not lose that much money — will they then drop their postage or improve their service?
Auspost parcel delivery is profitable, probably because they pay the independent contractors pretty poorly. The letter delivery service is money losing, and I'm sure the delivery of Chinese small packet letters isn't helping.
But the benefits largely accrue to the community through low prices, even if this means middle men and Gerry Harvey miss out.
So we pay taxes to support Australia Post who delivers cheap stuff for us for peanuts.
It isn't clear to me a system that charged higher prices for postage for China originated items would be beneficial for Australia. At the moment, the low prices are available to everyone who can shop online. If we changed postal prices, large distributors would still get the cheap prices, but would not necessarily pass them on. Go into BigW, JH or Harvey Norman for evidence.

I think the conclusion from the video is that the subsidised international postage agreement shouldn't exist in it's current form. But if it has to, then purchasing Chinese products from an Australian store will at least give a bit of margin back to the Australian business, as opposed to zero (and actually minus, once factoring in the Australian government subsidising the delivery of a good from a Chinese company straight to an Australian resident).

You're making it sound like the price would be the same so the margin goes to Australian retailers & postal service rather than Chinese ones. However many choose to buy from AliExpress or Temu because some products are significantly cheaper than local equivalents, or those products simply aren't imported by retailers here.
