Best Time to Buy Mens RM Williams Comfort Craftsman Boots?

hi all

looking at purchasing some rm williams for my next shoes instead of churning through cheaper ones constantly

they are obviously quite expensive - historically, is there generally a best time to buy them for the best deal? eofy? doesn't seem to be anything happening right now

i would probably look to buy from the store or atleast go there to understand the correct size i need etc first before purchase

thanks

Best time is subjective. When there’s an iconic sale most of the popular sizes get snapped up before you can even react.

I would suggest to make an iconic account (new if you already have) so you can stack heyiconic75 code when it goes on sale

  • thanks that makes sense. i guess i should go into an rm williams store to get fitted properly first. looks like they are making enough money so i wont feel bad about it

when youve got money to burn!

  • Do you plan to use them for years? I recently saw a fellow who had some from 30 years ago. He just keeps replacing the soles!

Consider https://rossiboots.com.au if you're looking more a slightly more economical option and prefer a more comfortable rubber sole.

    • But will you ever be fully satisfied?

The Dynamic flex Comfort Craftsman are the comfiest shoes i've ever bought.
Admittedly they were $400, but have last ~5 years.

      • Yep, definitely satisfied. So much so, will pickup another one in the next sale. I don't see a need to spend $400-600 on a pair of shoes. Then tons more to service them.

    • Rossi boots with the chunky sole are a genuine work boot. Would definitely buy these for working in the garden but they're not the same dress boot style of RMs. Have seen grads in the office wearing them but they look a bit ridiculous.

You will likely never break even if you are doing this for savings reasons. Those who say the boots last for ever are spending a fair bit on maintenance, and perhaps not wearing them frequently. If you are buying them for the long haul expect to shell out for

    • Heel rubber replacement at least yearly ($50-75).
    • Leather conditioner (or the leather will crack at some point).
    • Elastic side replacement every 3ish years (cant remember how much this costs but not too much)
    • Resole every 5ish years ($200?? cant remember, but it isn't cheap)

Not saying it isn't worth getting a pair, but don't wax delusional about the cost savings.

In terms of getting a bargain, know your exact size and style that you want. As soon as anyone has a decent sale (DJs/Iconic are the usual suspects), jump on it straight away or you will miss out.

    • It is a cost savings if you factor in with other shoes you're likely to have to replace.

I've had mine (2 pairs) for about 8 years and no elastic replacement required.. I replace the heel rubber every 2 years (I guess depends on how you rotate your pair colours black/brown/tan). I haven't had to resole any of them yet either… I guess depends on how you wear as well, I've travelled, weekend wear, as well as office work.

      • 2 pairs over 8 years.. og purchase price was probably around $800 + lets say conservatively $400 in heel replacements. You will have to replace the elastics and soles eventually. Can't be far off. Ignoring conditioning and the inevitable expensive maintenance you will be hit with in the near future, that is $1200. 24 pairs of $50 shoes…

Fwiw I replace my heels every 6-9 months so it varies from person-to-person. Walking quantity and style. Yours I would perceive as best-case scenario.

Heel rubber replacement at least yearly ($50-75).

I've replaced mine once in 5 years.
Thats using them 5 days a week. $50 for 5 years is a pretty decent deal, especially when i was spending $150 every 18 months on sub par shoes.
Probably have another 2 years until resoling.

From both a sustainability and cost perspective its not as expensive as you'd think.

I’d only be buying these if I was wearing them daily for what they were designed for.

Best time to buy mens RM Williams comfort craftsman boots?

    9am

  • Best time is whenever Ozbargain posts them up on sale for under $400ish.

  • HarbourTown Gold Coast

    • This. Based in Adelaide, but it's the same process in all the Harbour Town outlets.

They put a tiny hole in the top of the back of each boot to differentiate them from the full price boots, but you'd have to get on the floor to really see it. Prices are lower all year round with a good range of styles and sizes, and even cheaper with the big sales.

  • Join the army, get them for free with your “poly’s”uniforms.

  • I purchased black RM williams in London in the 80's when I was aged 30. At first I wore them regularly in drier weather and then and wore them occasionally when socialising. Elastic is tired but functional. They haven't been resoled, one new heel as far as I can recall. They still pass muster today, 35 years later with no blemishes or creases in the leather. My day to day shoe was and still is a $200 Timber land boat shoe with heavy leather upper sewn to a vibram type sole, I used to get 5 years out of that design, even when I was a scrambling around the place as a documentary cameraman. The latest pair I bought just last week may last a decade. I polish fairly regularly.

  • Thanks everyone

Especially those who responded with a particular time lol. I'll be sure to set an alarm

  • So what’s the best OzBargain way to get them seeing that offers are few and far between especially for Dynamic Flex? E.g. stacking rewards, discounts, gift cards etc?

  • Thanks everyone!

Ended up getting a brand new pair off FB marketplace delivered for $450 which I was happy with

Saw a couple of days later could have got it on sale from the iconic for $434 with discounted gift cards but oh well can't really complain too much

    Thanks for everyone's help here

Very happy with my price and the boots at the end of the day, and not having to pay full RRP

    Have a great day all
