Cheap Coffee These Days

Cheap coffees, cappuccinos latte's flat whites
Do they still exist or are they total unicorns now? I know a similar question came up a few months ago after a forum search.

But thought I'd ask again as my colleague in the office asked me the other day where the cheapest cup of coffee is in parramatta NSW where we work.

Asked on a Facebook group the same question saying I'm after a good $2 flat white and got roasted (pun intended). Everyone saying inflation, rent electricity and such pushed prices up and for good.
Woolworths metro and McDonald's for App deals are my usual go to places these days for their price.

I have an espresso machine at home and that is a godsend for WFH as I've saved hundreds after buying a basic $150 machine from JB Hi Fi.

As usual I'm aware of HJs 7-11 and Maccas but anything more substantial? Just asking the question in general but of course if you know anywhere in Sydney it would be much appreciated.

        • I also ordered on Sunday and it was $2.70.
What store did you go to?

Just buy (synthetic) caffeine pills. $40 for 360 at Amazon. Coffee is just a caffeine delivery mechanism, just like wine/beer/spirits is an alcohol delivery mechanism.

    • so you are using a Nokia phone? because phones just a call receiving and delivery mechanism

      • Cellphones are different. They are portable computers with sensors, rather than expensive telephones. You cannot play music, games, view constellations, take photos, get street directions, browse the internet and purchase things online using a "dumb phone".

Coffee is just caffeine with flavouring agents; wine and spirits are just alcohol with flavouring agents. Middle class people try to turn everything into an experience and ignore the fact that they are low level addicts.

    • I like the taste and having a warm milky drink during winter is nice. If I just wanted caffeine, then sure, but that's not my end goal here.

Have started taking a thermos of coffee to work, can no longer justify the daily cost of buying them and no it isn't that I can't afford but 2 coffees a day is now $11 (5.50 each) where I work. thats 55 bucks a week or 220 a month, rather put that towards new house build.

The last few puma energy petrol stations are still doing $2 coffees, they go up as they re-brand to caltex, not many left.

    • Barrista coffee?

      • If the site was a barista site sure but most of them had auto machines. Pretty sure all the barista sites have rebranded by now.

You are lucky you are not paying $8-$10 for one. Average price is $5-$7

Easiest solution don't rely on coffee. I'm not drinking any therefore no cost. Use company filtered water or hot chocolate machine if exist

  • I think OP accidentally found the money tree. OP should start a $2 coffee shop. surely he will make banks

I also love hunting for good, affordable, barista-made coffee. Cheapest I've seen lately is $3 from local cafe shop during their "happy hour" 9.30-11am, which isn't bad at all considering inflation yada yada.
But tbf, I think Australia's coffee price is actually really good for the quality. Decent cuppa can still be had for around $4 in many cafes.
Another tip is to use those loyalty stamps (whether physical, or through app like ritual/hey you) and be on the lookout for cafe that does keepcup discount.

  • buy the coffee bags from colesworth when they're 'half price'. add a dash of milk and they're palatable for work

  • A packet of chips, fuel, rent, groceries, electricity, superannuation, wages have all gone up since the standard across the board price of coffee in a regular cafe was $2.00.

Apart from 7/11 or maccas / HJ coffee, which runs those coffees as a loss-leader to get people in, I don’t know where else you’d get a reliable, consistent $1.00 - $2.00 coffee.

If you want a $5.00 - $7.00 cafe quality coffee at a lower price, you’re going to have to invest in a home coffee machine, grinder, roasted coffee beans and then make it yourself.

    • Is it really a loss for 7Eleven? For HJ/Maccas maybe because they need an employee to make it, but from $2 a cup of fully machined out coffee, I think 7Eleven could be at least slightly in the black. That being said, I don't know how they need maintenance/cost of it,

Coffeeclub VIP is $15 a year and you get buy 1 get 1 free. Great with a partner or work mate. You make it back within a week and get the benefit all year round. Now if you mean premium coffee like Campos then well yeah loyalty cards from every cafe, buy 10 get one free lol.

Bunnings cafe is decent and cheap for barista made. Powerpass made it even cheaper last weekend.

    • Got one today. $4 for a large using Powerpass.

  • Ride electric scooter to office. Drink free coffee from office coffee machine (fully automated machine and grinder). Recharge said electric scooter under desk at office. Ride home. Free coffee (=

  • Pie face servo $1 coffee

  • the assumption in the OP's question seems to be that coffee is purchased from a barista or such

as a frugalista, I have made my own from ground coffee for decades even at work offices when I saw others making instant.

last I calculated, mine was about 40 cents per mug and most of that cost was actually the milk.

today at RPAH I paid $5.20 for a large and saw maybe $4.70 for medium, $4.20 for small - only because I wanted to linger waiting for something nearby to open. Otherwise it's 3 cups of homebrew a day for me. Maybe $1.20 per day.

Even making coffee at home is more expensive then you think. $0.80 for 20g of coffee and roughly $0.50 for the milk. So $1.30 for a diy large latte. That is not factoring in the $6,000 la marzocco linea mini to make it on :p

Throw in $1 for staff, $0.50 for a "trendy" takeaway cup and I dare say break even for a coffee shop is around $3.

    • Lol if you're buying a la marzocca for home use, then i dont think cost would be an issue

  • Rashay's coffee is back to $3, with free flavours. Pretty much the best value sit down coffee (in a glass or china cup) left.
