Says it's 46% off the usual price of $899. Regardless of that over-inflated RRP, it is still a cheap price for this drive and especially compared to other sizes at this time.

Edit: Not a showstopper or at the sweet spot according to others more knowledgeable than myself on the topic.

Not really a showstopper deal. 18 TB Ironwolf Pro is cheaper ($453) and better in many use cases.

Agreed. Deal is when it hits below $400 (it did a couple of times), that's the sweet spot for now

      • Fair enough - info updated to reflect currently prevailing views.

  • https://www.amazon.com.au/HC550-18TB-512MB-SATA-Ultra/dp/B08… at $486 is possibly better value due to its URE of 10^15 instead of 10^14 of the wd red pro

I have become sceptical lately of WD and their new policy to start throwing alerts as soon as a drive hits the 3 year mark…

My 4 current ones are over 7.5 years runtime and have no issues.

    • thats awesome!
do you run yours 24/7 or only when in use?
i have 4x 4tb handmedowns and considering either:
      a) buying 'one size bigger'
      b) or just go crazy with size hoping they'll last a loooooong time.

My usage is typically 2 days a week of operation and most of that time they're actually 'sleeping'

      • 24x7, which may actually help prolong life. They only have about a dozen power cycles on each of them.

  • I know these are pro drives so it's not entirely unexpected, but these are LOUD. I bought some last year and had to get rid of them because the 'thunk' noise they made reverberated throughout my house.

  • waiting for some 20 / 22TB deals!
