I present the Venova YVS-100 as your ultra random deal of the day.

The original Yamaha Venova YVS-100 combines the simplicity of a recorder, the soothing sounds of a saxophone and the ease of portability for casual playing for beginners and professionals alike
A saxophone-like sound from a compact body, the Venova YVS-100 is a completely new type of instrument designed to produce the rich expressive tone of a sax with a fully chromatic two octave range
The unique shape and compact design shortens the distance between the tone holes making it possible to play all the notes with fewer keys while the branched pipe creates a conical instrument sound
The durable, water-resistant and portable body can be taken anywhere from the beach to a BBQ or your favourite venue, and comes complete with a mouthpiece, reed and guidebook, so you can get playing
Items delivered: 1x Yamaha Venova YVS-100 water-resistant casual wind instrument in the key of C, with mouthpiece, synthetic reed, case, pads, cleaning swab and guidebook, in white

You heard them, perfect for the BBQ

It's basically a recorder that sounds sort of like a cross between a clarinet and a saxophone, and looks like something out of the Cantina band.
They're usually $140-$170 locally for this model so a good deal for the maybe two other venova players in Australia.
Personally I have the tenor model but it seems to be out of stock or price gouged. Unfortunately I couldn't find the alto model. Pros of this model at least are that is uses a standard fingering style (heh) as opposed to German like the tenor.

If you do get one definitely ditch the plastic reed for a wooden one and consider upgrading the mouthpiece.

I don't expect many to sell but on the ultra unlikely chance that you are in the market, this is the best price I've ever seen.

That is definitely a strange looking bong…

Depending how many octaves you need, the Jsax sounds better; I have both and the Venova is a very plastic-reverb poisoned sound

Can I make my children play on this instead of the school recorder?

    • If they can play a recorder this would be a good step up perhaps, but would be weird to play during recorder recitals because the sound would stand out a lot.

Just make sure they have a good recorder, so they learn how beautiful it can be.

I thankyou for this as I like collecting and learning obscure musical instruments, my wife and kids on the otherhand, condemn you for all eternity.

  • Awesome op.

Im new to wind instruments. Would this be too hard to start with?

I have heard some people say the yvs-100 is a bit tricky to get a sound out of, but having had the yvs-140 as my first woodwind (but with a background in other instruments) it only took me a few minutes to get a sound from it and a few weeks to start sounding decent across the entire range.

The yvs-100 is a bit easier to finger the notes on compared to the 140 but might be trickier to get a sound out of. Not sure how much of that is down to using the included plastic reed though, I just got a #2 reed and called it a day.

However i think its best to not think of this as a saxophone substitute but as its own instrument. I find the best resources for learning (for me at least) are flute sheet music, especially if you want to try learning by matching a graded system.

Sorry if that comes across a bit disjointed.

  • Is the fingerings the same compared to an alto sax?

Edit: just checked the chart and no it is not :(
