Consider me naive, but whats the deal here, I spend $100 from my visa/master/other card to get $100 worth of Visa card.

If you need to meet a credit card spend this month, this allows you to spend now for future purchases. Also, they accept Amex, so you can make purchases at places that don't accept it and get a better point earning rate.

Gift for someone? Not everything is about you!

    • Some merchants (ie. ATO payment, council fee, land tax etc) will not received rewards points as it is treated as government payment.

It is cheaper with surcharge fee with visa/master debit rather than Amex while earning points

Good question rkm. See the previous referenced deal for some hints.

For example if you have a credit card where you need to spend $x by say 30 June to get lots of bonus points and you have run out of ideas then this could bring you over the threshold now, and the Visa card bought here can be used later.

Another example might be you want to pay a merchant using an AmEx card but they only take Visa. Then you can use your AmEx here to pay Visa there.

Possibly the Shopback Cashback deal enables some extra - I have not tried that.

Trust me - Ozbargainers are an awesome innovate community who find value in deals that might elude others.

  • Credit card points. Use $100 to buy this card. Use that to pay non point earning transactions such as ATO payment, government bill, council etc

    • +3

Someone says Activ VISA has blocked ATO.

      • +1

        That is correct

      • +3

Thank God, iTunes hasn't banned ATO yet

  • Can I use Coles MasterCard to pay for this?

    • +3

Doesn't seem to be working for me.

      • +3

same not working for me too

    • +1

      not working for me either

    • It did not work for me yesterday, as I got a message saying the card issuer rejected the transaction.

I suspect InComm has blocked Giftz.com.au, or there is something about the information provided by Giftz.com.au that is causing InComm to reject the transaction.

  • can i use this card in japan?

  • Can this card be added into Apple/Google Pay?

Does this Visa card have the same "guessing-hacking" issue as Coles Mastercard gift card?

    • +6

You can choose to not activate it till the time you use it, much safer.

      • Thanks. Do you know whether this card supports 3DS?

        • +1

          Probably no.

  • Is it easier to use this card on digital platforms (Kmart, random websites)

I just tried to use the Coles MasterCard at Kmart online and an eSIM card website. Both failed. Starting to regret buying so many of these gift cards.

      Generally speaking, no.

Activ Visa gift cards and Coles Mastercard gift cards are both prepaid gift cards, which means they both are not linked to a verified cardholder and therefore cannot support some security features merchants sometimes use to verify transactions (e.g. 3-D Secure). That makes these kinds of Visa/Mastercard cards riskier for a merchant to accept, as they increase the merchant's exposure to fraudulent transactions.

Having said that, there are a few reasons I think you will have a slightly easier time using Activ Visa gift cards online than Coles Mastercard gift cards:

      • Activ Visa gift cards support Apple Pay, Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet. I find that if I use an Activ Visa gift card at an online merchant via one of these mobile wallets, the merchant is more likely to accept it than if I simply inputted the debit/credit card details into the online checkout. (That is my experience with Prezzee, anyway.)

      • Activ Visa gift cards can be linked to PayPal, and Blackhawk Network (the Activ Visa gift card scheme owner/operator) actually tells you on their website how to do that, which I take to mean they are actually okay with people linking Activ Visa gift cards to PayPal. On the other hand, it appears that InComm (the Coles Mastercard gift card scheme owner/operator) does not want people to link Coles Mastercard gift cards to PayPal.

      • Coles Mastercard gift cards are very popular prepaid gift cards, and it appears some online merchants (e.g. Woolworths Group gift card portal) have got their payment processors to specifically block Coles Mastercard gift cards. On the other hand, Activ Visa gift cards probably have not been as popular and are more likely to slip through the net.

  • where can I check the balance? tried on https://www.cardbalance.com.au/ but it says please contact card provider

  • Great deal for anyone needing to hit a min spend - I'm sitting on a few Coles Mastercards from the recent NSW/ACT/VIC deal. Shame the earlier comments are suggesting we can't recycle those cards into here. Would like to reduce my liability on hand of those cards quickly but I've got a few bills coming up in the next few weeks that they're earmarked for.
