It appears it can use as a phone and also come with a $40 prepaid sim. Whirlpool Discussion here

also come with a $40 prepaid sim

Telstra SIM with 20GB and 6 months expiry. Where can I buy that for $40? :-)

I'm using it as a car GPS navigator. Display is fine. A bit buggy. Loses GPS accuracy occasionally, and needs a reboot.
Or randomly reboots, very occasionally. Would be unacceptable for a phone, but meh, $99.

    • Have you used it as a phone though? I thought that would be one of the least cpu intensive tasks.

I agree, though I think when they say "phone" they mean as a your daily driver main device, which, I still think you could get by happily but that's another discussion.

        • Yeah I was thinking of getting one more for the lounge room to use on WiFi, checking Ozbargain, web browsing and controlling my Aldi smart downlights.

          • @WatchNerd: Yes, what the Duke said. Not reliable enough for your primary device.
It has enough CPU and RAM to run google maps, which is not a small ask.

    • I just started going through the activation process on the included SIM, but only had 5GB for 28 days - anyone else have this ? Was really hoping for the 20GB / 6 months (!) Any ideas if there's another way to get the longer expiry ?

      • I just activated 20GB / 6 months. It was the only option. Did you try contacting Telstra?

    RAM - 3GB

    Landfill

I have one. It is a bit slow for me, but it's a good form factor, built-in dual 4G etc. Overall good for kids or for a project.

Good as Home Assistant Dashboard ??

    • Second this question. Please advise does it have google store to install Home assistant app?

  • I'm looking for a motorcycle GPS, but 3gb RAM means painfully slow …

    • I use ride motorbike by using GPS on my phone by listening to directions via wired earphones (this was 2012), while phone was in my pocket. It's hard to see the display while ur riding in day light

      • Phone works ok, but I want something bigger. It's mostly for off-road riding

  • Does this have a glass screen or one of the cheap plastic screens?

    • +1

      Glass.

As per that whirlpool discussion - case you can get that mostly fits is https://www.bigw.com.au/product/cygnett-nanogrip-universal-8…

  • I wonder what @TabletNerd (Clear) thinks of this?

More RAM and storage would have made this perfect. CPU is good and a HD display for an 8" tablet is fine.
