  • Thanks OP, just re-booked a trip from wotif to expedia, and cashback increased by 8.5%

  • The t&cs mentioned using westpac cards for bonus cashback. Is this for westpac only or open to all? Dont quiet get this.

    • There is a further 2% with Westpac

      • Ah ok so you still get the base 14.5% with other cards. I see thanks mate

      • Where does it says this, doesn't seem clear to me if the bonus is the 14.5% or that's standard rate? I can't see any mention of an extra 2% it also says under the Do's to use your Westpac card.

Ive contacted their support to ask though only have 3 hours till it expires.

      • That 2% bonus is only if you use 'Pay now' and not later at the hotel right?

  • +8

For the dates I am looking, Expedia showed $1050 through ShopBack compared to $623 on incognito Expedia

    • +1

      Serious?!?!? That's a big difference

    • Reflects the same for me

      • same price via SB or via incognito mode

Hotel was the Movenpick in Melbourne for dates in July

So think it depends on the hotel perhaps??

        • Definitely. It would depend on the location and dates. I was checking for Kyoto in November.

  • Does anyone know if you use Expedia points for part of the booking, does that invalidate cashback?

    • +1

Done twice using points … cash back via Cash Rewards no issue (once on a small value & again on a very large value). Not tried with Shopback. YMMV

CashRewards/Shopback should be reported for these shady deals. They know full well that Expedia increase prices in some cases - often by more than the cashback amount!

  • Trivago was fined $45m last year for misleading consumers about room rates (claimed to offer impartial price comparisons but results were actually determined by advertising spend, and rates offered were not the cheapest)

Shopback and Cashrewards promoting these deals when they know full well the retailers actually increase prices when you follow their affiliate links (so you aren't really getting the advertised rate of "cash back" discount at all) seems similarly misleading

    • I don't think it is SB or CR that is in the wrong, more like Booking.com who jacks the prices when affiliate link is used?

So Booking.com should be the ones reported and fined.

      • Agree this is a shady practice by booking.com also but SB and CR should at least add a note that certain merchants may increase prices if you use them (or just don't do business with sites that do this)

Users have an expectation that the cashback percentage is a discount off the normal price, it's misleading consumers if that's not the case

  • I have been working on this the last few hours. Booked 4 hotels and what I noticed with prices are it was a lot cheaper than Hotels, bookings, etc for my ones too.
I did not check shopback link or typing in expedia link, but I'm just happy i have my accommodation sorted! Just the motivation i needed

    • Yep $5 cheaper with Expedia than Booking.com for my stay which was interesting

  • Thanks OP, how long does tracking usually take with Expedia?

  • purchased about $2.5K prepaid accommodation via the link to Expedia and still not showing up on Shopback

Gunna be mighty pissed if it doesn't track

    • I booked around 2pm this afternoon, still hasn’t tracked (currently 11pm). Am hoping just a delay and that it tracks overnight.

      • No tracking here too. Made 5 bookings for from 1pm-4:45pm

    • update - tracking came through around 4 am this morning😃

      • mine too :) happy camper

        • Out of interest - did your amounts equate to the 14.5%? Mine came through overnight too but were only equating to about 5-6% :(

          • @[Deactivated]: Some were under, some over. I'm confused too.

            • @cheapass88: Thx for the response. Not just me then. It does say 'validating your cashback' when i click it, so hoping it gets adjusted. Shopback don't seem to be as good as Cashrewards when it comes to getting the cashback calculation right

              • @[Deactivated]: Shopback and CR seem to give you cashback on the full amount including GST, but maybe Expedia excludes the GST amount?

  • Currently still offering 12% cashback for hotels plus 2% Westpac bonus, which isn't too bad.

  • Booked. Not tracked yet.
