New Adelaide NBN Installation - Low Use, Needed ASAP - ISP Recommendations?

I need NBN installed to replace my terrible Optus wireless broadband. Frequently getting < 1 Mbps in the evening. I'm in Adelaide - area has FTTN.

I figure I only need 50Mbps, but wondering if it's worth getting a 100Mbps connection short-term to get the free FTTP installation.

I really need to get this done ASAP though. Does FTTP take longer?

Which ISP will get me up and running the quickest? Or are they all pretty much the same? Obviously I want a good deal as well, or I wouldn't be here. Currently looking at Tangerine or Exetel based on price alone.

Also: are modem/routers provided by the ISP generally ok, or should I research that separately? Sorry: so many questions…

Sorry if something similar has been asked before: I've read a lot of posts, but couldn't see an exact answer.

If you can get FTTP installed for free then I'd do it. My last place had gigabit FTTP and it was great, most things downloaded full gigabit speeds from major services like Apple and Microsoft. Even if you only use 50Mbps having the option to go faster is nice.

Sign up for FTTN and make a booking for FTTP at the same time. The FTTP installation can take a couple weeks. I would use the 1 Month Free Unlimited nbn (New & Relocating Customers, Save up to $149; Includes 250/25 and 1000/50 Mbps) @ Aussie Broadband. Long term you can find better pricing from Leaptel, More Telecom, Exetel and Superloop.

In terms of getting NBN connected, most ISP's are pretty much the same.
More Telecom if you have a Commonwealth Bank Credit Card.
    Tangerine if you don't.
Exetel used to (maybe still do) allow you to downgrade without penalty from a high speed plan after the FttP connection has completed. So assuming you can get the upgrade, they might be the best option.

You need to be connected to FttN first to get the upgrade AFAIK. (and you need to be in an area that is ready for upgrade, not everywhere is)
This may mean taking the hit on the $300 new development fee, but hey.

ISP modem/routers are almost always terrible. I recommend that you grab a Telstra Smart Modem secondhand.
They're cheaper than an ISP modem, readily available, work fine (aside from the few ISP's who use VLAN tagging, Internode being one), and generally come with active 4G backup connection, which is especially useful if you're waiting on NBN to get the connection up and running.

You don't need to be on FTTN or FTTC first to get FTTP. You can go straight to FTTP.

      • From Tangerine:

you need to have an active NBN FTTN first so that once it’s connected to the NBN Network then we’ll be able to see the timeframe of the availability of FTTP upgrade on our system . So would you like us to connect you to NBN FTTN for the meantime?

        That seems… silly.

That must be a Tangerine thing. I've seen users go from 4G home broadband straight to FTTP.

          • @Twix: Dammit! Do you know of a specific provider that's done this?

    • Thanks for all the info. Currently looking at Tangerine which has a 6 month offer of $63/mth for 92Mbps so I can get FTTP. They assured me I can downgrade at any time. They estimate 2/3 weeks, but that will give me plenty of time to source a modem.

      Cheers

      • Scratch that: $50/mth for first 6 months. It changed when I put my address in…

Your download will be just over 100Mbps. The Telstra smart modem gen 1, 2 and 3 can be setup as a router. If you are purchasing new from a store you only need a router for FTTP and not a VDSL2 modem and router all-in-one.

You’ve taken the first initial step of going to https://www.nbnco.com.au/ , to establish service is at your address?

    • Yes. FTTN planned, but may be able to get fibre. Providers I've looked at say I can get it.
