Speaking of that Telstra $1 deal, who else out there still havn't got their services formally activated? Are we going to get free Telstra NBN for a lifetime? lol.

    • Mine was activated a month after it started working. If yours isn't, then yes, it will be free forever. At least until the finally decide to activate it.

      • +2

Nop mine is still pending. I even chased after them to activate it at first, until I finally realised it might be a good thing for me:)

Unlike others out there, I did plug in the Telstra modem promptly. Not sure what is holding them up from getting the service activated.

        • I never plugged mine in. They just randomly decided to activate it one day, four weeks later.

    • +2

Wouldn't surprise me the way telstra is run I ended up with a free xbox series x when they first came out

      • +1

Or having 2 iPhones delivered when pre-ordering.

        Just check the forums.

        • +1

Would you be able to kindly send me the link to that forum please?

        • +5

Yeah Telstra is definitely one of the most expensive Telcos on paper but never fail to provide amazing value in peculiar ways.

          • +1

@truetypezk: I was with Telstra back in the ADSL days, then when it came time to switch to NBN, they kept sending me new modems each with a Telstra TV.
Send 1, they call sorry the modem we sent is not compatible with the NBN. Send another, sorry this modem isn't compatible with NBN, so they send another + Telstra TV.
Had 3 different modems and 3 Telstra TVs before even connecting to the NBN. Each modem\router was a different model.
They never wanted the modems back either.

            • +2

@UltimateAI: They must be using you as their e-waste recycler!
I think the gen 3 modem has some resale value if you bother to put it up.

            • @UltimateAI: I assume all Telstra customers paying for such generosity

      • Holy cow

    • +4

      Wait what did I miss?

    • I'm the opposite, got activated on time. Asked to cancel after 1.5 months, they still haven't cancelled. I got last month refunded and will annoy them to refund the next month as it's coming up

  • +3

Speaking of which, i was advised that having a new connection (in addition to my old one) as a pre-existing customer (moving but using my old house for my in-laws) wouldn't make me eligible for any bonuses as I'm not a new customer nor moving my old connection. Disappointing.

  • +5

99 a month for 100mbs. Want 2 months free at that price

    • Inclined to agree , especially considering that no is modem included.

    • +1

Not even guaranteed a good service with them anymore. Where I am I was getting about 50-75% of the advertised speed. Switched to Launtel and get 90-100%, Telstra I get about 5-10% over the advertised speed, but hate Telstra and only using for the $1 months. Will go back to Launtel.

Using the same equipment for all of them and all on Port 1.

  • +9

C'mon aussie. How about a bit of sugar for long time customers….

You are encouraging churn. AND we may prefer other green grass. Think about that!

    • +2

Left Aussie for Superloop and then have been doing a journey of free months, can confirm grass is not greener in my case

      • +1

Where I am it's great, NBN is not popular all super cable so less traffic I assume

        • +2

Yeh it’s definitely different for everyone given the amount of variables. I’ve lucked out with my FTTN and hit 100/40mbps easily, Aussie and Superloop were far and away better for pings/evening speeds and even Xbox downloads which Telstra are having some interesting problems lately. ABB and Superloop aren’t immune to problems either obviously but for my use case definitely are on top thus far

      • +1

I switched from iinet to superloop as people pm here kept saying it was good. I'm on a higher speed with superloop and it goes slower. Worst of all it drops out constantly. Drives me bonkers.

    • +8

Nah Aussie is no good anymore. Price hike and no actions on retaining customers.

      Switched out won't come back

BTW their connection to Asia is also pretty shocking

Worse than Telstra. Don't bother if you play games on Asia servers

      • +1

I was going to switch back but wasn’t aware about their connection to Asian servers! Thanks for the heads up.

Sadly I think a lot of companies stiff their current customers while offering freebies to new customers though :(

        • No idea what they're talking about re Asian servers. My connection to Singapore, HK and Japan are very good and haven't changed in quality.

          • @DogGunn: Well then I’ll give the free month a whirl and see how it is here from Perth. Tried Tokyo Apex servers while with Telstra and was hitting 350+ ping, was not a good time

            • +2

@MBix: From Melbourne to Japan GCE, 135ms on ABB for me.

              • @DogGunn: 250-300ms always to Japan game servers

Had Telstra was 200ms and SL 180ms

                My experience differ

Reports of sites in China slow and not accessible on ABB in other forums I read.

Anything that uses Vocus like TPG have bad routes to Asia

                Best is GSL

      • +1

        Who'd you switch to?

      • Oh.. I play games on asia servers, was planning for a switch from TPG due to its bad routing to asia. The only reason why I'm considering ABB is because I have read through comments on the internet that it has good routing to asian servers, but looks like it's not the case now? Do you or maybe anyone else have a ranking for best connectivity to asia server ISPs?

        • +1

Would say Launtel and Superloop/Exetel , follow by Telstra / ABB. Try looking glass if available you will find out

Accessing anything in HK China is slow on ABB and if you play Genshin impact ABB always around 230ms - 250ms not good enough

          They don't have a PoP I think

          • +1

@neonlight: Thank you for the recommendations. I play Genshin too with TPG and ping is usually around 160-180ms, but sometimes it goes to 220ms and I have restart the modem to get the right routing. Can't believe ABB would have higher ping though, guess I'll try it out as it's free anyways lol.

            • @DaEggy: I have seen ABB and Telstra dropping latency randomly for Genshin servers in Japan, But Telstra was slightly better. It can go to Red 250-280ms+ whereas Launtel, Superloop/Exetel very consistent 120-180ms. You can report back if you like.

Even off 4G Telstra hotspot had better pings than ABB

            • @DaEggy: Using a vpn (I use a Sydney location) reduces ping to 100ms for me in Genshin. Give it a try.

              • @ChillBro: VPN connecting from where to where? This is only possible on PC not PlayStation you will have muck around with your router bit too much effort including custom firmware and split tunnelling

      • Yup.

        Dishonest from the start.

i was a customer for 6 hours, never again.

      • Connection to Asia is always bad no matter the carrier, some may be better but not by much. The distance between Asia, US etc. Will always be the same.

        • +1

This is wildly incorrect. There are multiple fibers/routes and only some ISP's pay for the good stuff.

          • @[Deactivated]: Some fibre routes are better, shorter distance. But in general the average end user isn’t going to see enough of a performance increase to want to waste the effort and pain in switching carriers.

            • -1

@theunknown03: This is also wildly incorrect. Firstly, this entire comment chain is descended from someone specifically asking about gaming via asia, and secondly, it takes litetally seconds to sign up to a new plan nowadays, and the churn can be completely automatic. Its minimal effort. There is no "pain".

It is not like the old days where a technician woukd have to go to the exchange and manually cutover your service.

              • @[Deactivated]: Pain of changing companies, minimal effort yes but it comes with no guarantee of results. Effort = time and time wasted can cost $$$. Not wildly incorrect it’s how you are interpreting everything.

                • @theunknown03: Don't get salty because your extreme hyperbole was called out mate. It's easier than it's literally every been to change companies, and easier than it's ever been to change right back. You were wrong. Cope.

                  • +1

@[Deactivated]: I’ve seen how you respond to other posts on here, very much the same manner.

                    • -1

@theunknown03: I do indeed have a habit of calling out nonsense.

If there's one thing I can't stand it's people talking nonsense as though their opinion is at all qualified. This site is infested with armchair exports offering bluntly wrong information as fact because….I don't know. They get off on pretending they know it all?

                      • +1

@[Deactivated]: Haha funny personality you have armchair of experts; it wasn’t totally incorrect, only from your perspective.

                        • -1

@theunknown03: Again, no. Just no. Some carriers pay for better bandwidth on faster routes. This is not a matter of opinion. This is not a matter of debate. Your statement about people not seeing a performance increase was wrong. Your statement about "effort" and "pain" to switch carriers is 10 years out of date.

                          Your knowledge is obsolete. Learn.

    • +9

Telco providers rarely reward customers for being loyal. Switching between ISP's is really the best method of getting any sort of discount.

The same may also apply for Electricity, gas, insurance, credit cards etc. Service providers frequently capitalise on inattention and inertia to increase prices for existing customers

      • +1

Yep. It’s become such a waste of time.

I now handle all the switching to the best available deals for my household, my sister’s family and of course my parents.

      • +4

Agree. Over the last 15 years I'm on my 6th or 7th gas retailer, 5th electricity retailer, 2nd broadband and I always haggle insurances, credit cards and foxtel. Never afraid to close account and move.
ABB not looking very competitive at the moment. SL kicking butt with $54 50/20 unlim for 6 months.

        • Every since I swotched from iinet to superloop I've been miserable. My net is slow and I'm on a higher speed and it drops out constantly. Dozens of times a day. It frustrates the hell out of me. I'm looking for a new IDP as I cannot stand superloop anymore. Every damn day and they say its fine on their end but only started when I switched.

          • @UndeclaredFreak: Exact opposite for me. Constant dropouts with every provider except Superloop. Telstra and Mate are so bad it happens multiple times per day, ranging from a few seconds up to a couple hours. Origin and another I can't remember were ok but still not good enough.

      • Except ISPs have gotten smart you are not treated as new customer unless you are out 12 months

    • +2

Switched from Aussie to superloop for an intended churn.
streaming services were loads better that I never went back to aussie

      • +1

Yep same here. I used to switch between Superloop and ABB every 6 months for the 1 month free or $10 off for 6 months. Then ABB raised their fees and make churning less enticing.

        • If there's an ISP I can switch out for 12 months then back to Superloop I would do it but atm not worth doing so. As Superloop offers retention discount which is better than what ABB is doing don't care after 6 months in.

    • +1

Its so bad at ABB that I switched to Optus.

Free $504 modem, $10 off for first 6 months and faster speeds on same plan.

100/20 plan and getting an extra 10mbps download speed.

      • 3 years with Optus, or they charge you for the modem correct??

        • It works off at $14 p/m over 3 years

so if you leave early you get it price reduced.

    • +3

ABB are considered a premium provider, you will have a generous CVC allocation happy to pay premium rates for a great service.
I've used cheaper provides with HIGHER speed-tests (clear many ISP's apply QOS priority to speed tests, so results are great), but actual usage like streaming isn't the best. Other providers great speeds 90% of the time, but that 10% when you need it, out of the blue.. damn throttling.
I was happy with Telstra, but find Aussie slightly better, with absolutely outstanding phone support.
Like you have an issue with NBN, their support techo's follow it through and ride the NBN until it's resolved.

  • +4

Time to order from Dodo to this for future date!!

Edit: code is coming up invalid…. Is this targeted to any specific group or type of nbn?

    • +1

Were you with ABB at that address less than 6 months ago?
I was, and so it is coming up invalid. Tried a different address, and it was fine.

      • Never used them before.

        • +1

if you have taken origin nbn offer in june, they're abb too.

  • Code does not work for me :(

  • i kept dropping dns for an hour or 2 about once or twice a week with superloop. They were fine apart from that. Just went to abb last night and used this deal.

  • +7

I have been with ABB for 2+ years, they are great, but I'm over the fact that I need to hop around to get any kind of deal that non-loyal customers get.

    • +6

Companies aren't loyal to you so why be loyal to them? Change over takes minutes these days, so it's minimal effort and downtime.

  • Code doesn’t work for me

    • +1

If code doesn't work then it may mean the address has been with ABB in the last 6 months. I tested i out and it seems to be this way

      • I was with origin nbn around 4 months ago

        • +4

Origin is Aussie BB under the hood.

  • What provider charges pro-rata? Would like to churn from my expired $20 for 6 months deal with Superloop, but can't use the coupon until that 6 months is up.

    • Launtel charges per day of usage and you can pause, cancel or change at anytime - is that kinda what you were after?

  • if only I was a 'new' customer. coulda had 1k/50 for 1 month lol

  • I'm not sure if the new AussieBroadband modem has 4G backup, but I sincerely hope they move in that direction as it is too painful to have downtime from unexpected NBNCo maintenance.

    • No they don't have it because they got no infrastructure for mobile towers. Voda and Telstra/Optus can because they can afford and own mobile tower equipment

  • What's this $1 for two months with Telstra. Anyone have a link?

    • +3

You might want to look for a time machine while you’re at it ;)

    • +1

Watch out for Telstra day promos

  • $79 / month for 50/20? Ha, yeah righto.

  • no lock in contract?

    • Correct

  • +4

    Code not working

EDIT: Appears if you have used the free months with Origin NBN you are not eligible

  • 12/1 Mbps

    Lol

    • Still plenty of people on ADSL, waiting for the NBN.

      • -1

        Lol

        • that’s not funny. ADSL was a nightmare for me

  • btw how much longer can we hold on to the telstra modem before getting billed for $200?

    • 2 weeks

      • I've been disconnected nearly 4 weeks now and don't have anything yet.

    • +1

apparently you do not need to return it
      According to FAQ

We don’t currently require you to return the modem when you cancel your Upfront Internet plan. You can recycle the modem, or keep it. Here’s how it works:

To cancel your plan please message us or call 13 22 00 . You can’t cancel via My Telstra.
Currently, you won’t be asked to return the Telstra-supplied modem, or be charged a non-return fee.
If you don’t want to keep the modem, we will explain your recycling options. You’ll also find these on our device recycling page.

You’ll receive an email confirmation that you’re cancelling your service. And that’s it!

      • can you be more specific on where you see this? sorry I am having trouble finding this.

        • +2

          https://www.telstra.com.au/internet/nbn

Under "Existing Telstra internet customers" how do i return the modem if i cancel the plan (drop down)

          • @Irishness: Thank you.

Would it be worthwhile to try to sell this on Gumtree/eBay then?

            • @CoronavirusVaccine: yes or keep & use with your current ISP & enjoy free 4G backup

              • @Irishness: Being on FTTN I've collected a couple of these boxes over the decade and only use them as modems (bridge mode), no routing and wifi off. The one I use has never failed and all I really want from them is low power consumption and small form factor.

The new Telstra box is a bit bigger and I'd guess it has higher power consumption so don't really want it anyway.

                • @CoronavirusVaccine: yeah know what you mean, mine was plugged in once wifi was problematic with a delay so back to trusty Asus, thought the wifi 6 might be an improvement but no, still deciding what to do with it

  • +4

This code didn’t work for me. However, I called them and were able to get my first month free over the phone using the code “FREEBGB”. You can also ask for the service to be activated from a future date.

  • I'm currently on an intenode Opticomm plan, but having issues with speed and dropout…
Was considering trying ABB but they pass on the full $99 setup fee to the customer…. This free month negates some of that cost but jeez…. Still reluctant in case it's no better and need to change again.

Anyone on Opticomm that can weigh in?
